Reddit, what is the most powerful image you have ever seen? by tokerjoker11in AskReddit

I imagine this will already have been buried very far but the pictures from the funeral of Michael Levin, an American who volunteered for the Israeli Army and was killed in the 2006 Lebanon War by terrorists from Hezbollah.

I highly recommend the Yale Edition for those looking for an English translation.

Never been and even in spite of the positively-atrocious website, I hear good things about Alice's Tea Cup.

Also I recall someone mentioning high tea at the Plaza Hotel or some such.

Anyone know if the power management regression (the ACPI thing) got fixed in this release?

Official Google Blog: We’ve acquired Motorola Mobility by SkyJediin google

[–]yonkeltron 2 points3 points ago

I had been led to believe that MoMo makes all of their modems, set-top boxes (I think this means cable boxes?) along with their portable devices like phones and tablets.

With the exception of their cable modems, I could see pretty much everything they do gaining tremendous value and functionality from Android and the like.

I know that they've taken steps to squash such predictions but I really hope that they fold Motorola's products into the Google family. I would love it if Motorola cable boxes came standard with Google TV so it just showed up in everyone's home. I would also appreciate some awesome phones running the most-excellent stock-Android rather than the tainted crap I get from my carrier.

Just a general upvote for someone who bases their opinions on evidence.

It has nothing at all to do with the shit Israel is doing in Palestine.

So, you bring up a valid point but I can only support it with a few caveats. As a person who believes in democracy, I feel that history has shown us how criticism and transparency can make or break an effective government. Sometimes, this comes from the inside and sometimes it comes from the outside. Honestly, having plenty of disdain for certain aspects of Israeli policy, I really don't mind it when people want to criticize Israel on those grounds.

However, I do mind it when people make comments which society at large would label as discriminatory, anti-Semitic or otherwise-discriminatory under the banner of "anti-Zionism". I have personally heard honest-to-goodness old school anti-Semitic comments ala "some of my best friends are Jews but Israel blah blah" or "Israel doesn't need anymore advocates because the Jews control the media". It goes on and on and I do mind these comments but have, sadly, come to expect them due to the complete lack of integrity on the part of many of Israel's detractors.

When people with honestly-valid criticism of Israel in some way stand silent and let the crazies use anti-Zionism as thinly-veiled vehicle for hate and bigotry. It also pisses me off because it swallows ideas which would otherwise spawn interesting and helpful discussion.

I have found so many gems from indie sci-fi writers!

How has your Kindle affected your spending on books? by MensaDropoutin kindle

[–]yonkeltron 1 point2 points ago

As has been noted, publishers will often set a higher price than the paperback equivalent so even with a budget I still don't get to buy as many books as I'd like. Still, I find myself taking advantage of the tons of free books available all over the web and that parallels my previous consumption from the library. I also read very quickly so my wife has lent me a few books before and I plan to take better advantage of the Prime borrowing facilities.

I got the update a few days ago and confirm everything you've said. I don't know if I noticed a speed difference in terms of page refresh but I know that I really appreciate some of the usability improvements.

Do you agree that the home screen looks nicer?

If there is a feature you miss from Emacs and you think it would be popular enough to implement with crowdfunding then add it to the bottom of this page by kcinin emacs

I agree that this should happen and that it should happen under the official auspices of the project rather than something indie like climacs.

Just back from Islay by Paul-Sin Scotch

Enjoy the Laddie 10. Hell of a fun scotch as most from the Bruichladdich family have proven themselves. They don't seem afraid of breaking rules to make something awesome and their results have been, at least in my experience, very unique and enjoyable.

Why did Greek and Egyptian beliefs (among others) became mithologies but Jewish and Catholic beliefs became religions? by ciberajin explainlikeimfive

[–]yonkeltron 1 point2 points ago

A lot gets lost in translation

You may have an interest in the Targum Onkelos and the way that Onkelos chooses to clarify through translation different textual references to God. Paying attention to his treatment of the Tetragrammaton might prove provocative.

there's a pretty large grey area between saying "YHWH is superior to the false gods which the other cultures worship, because they are not real," and "YHWH is superior to the false gods which the other cultures worship, because he's just the best of the whole pantheon."

Islamic scholar Reza Aslan proposes a similar historical hypothesis regarding the formation of Islam wherein Mohammad threw out all out whatever other idols were in the Kaaba leaving only the one called Allah.

I think you actually stumbled upon a really profound question regarding when a culture evolves to the point of it becoming "separate" in some way from its own origins. I wonder if a sociology could shed light on this particular subject?

You may find this book by Gideo Libson interesting (worth a check out from your library rather than a purchase) as it covers similarities between Jewish and Islamic law during the Geonic period (9th-11th centuries). The reason I bring it up stems from the fact that Libson conducts his investigations through the lens of custom as a source of influence for formal legal development.

Yeah, I agree with your implied premise that society at large could do with a little intellectual honesty in these matters. However, I don't care for speech which belittles others and I encourage you to consider how many people embrace fiction of various sorts as defining characteristics. In some cases, they call that religion and elsewhere they call it other things. Personally, I judge a person by their actions and generally try to respect their personal interests regardless of whether or not I care for (or agree with) them.
