To All: Dan Dennet asserted, "When it comes to religious belief ... we are confronted with a thicket, in a swamp, full of fog." Is religion unavoidably obscure? Is there such a thing as a "clear and distinct" religion? by Kirkayakin DebateReligion

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

tl;dr.

I'm not sure what specific feature of religion we're talking about here ( or whether that matters), but with a few specific exceptions, human language is notoriously imprecise across the board.

I don't think that it's too difficult to find speech about religious topics that's no more imprecise than discussion of other topics.

Do you think we can get rid of BC and Anno Domini within our lifetime? by HiddenTemplein atheism

Do you think we can get rid of BC and Anno Domini within our lifetime?

No, nor is it important to do so.

Are atheists afraid of organized atheism? by PullOutBoyin atheism

You might agree with some of the ideas of Alain de Botton.

Most people here seem to dislike him.

What is this communities opinion on Buddhism/Hinduism? by pro753698in atheism

I'm atheist Buddhist myself, so I'm fine with atheist Buddhism.

In a lot of ways, Buddhism and Hinduism aren't really extremely similar.

Religious slaughter of animals without stunning them first - Halal, Kosher Techniques Cruel To Animals? by eyeofthestormin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

IMHO the entire meat industry and all industrial animal slaughter is unacceptably cruel.

Does anybody else find it odd that in biblical times people apparently *had to be told* not to sacrifice their children to Molech? (Leviticus 18:21) How fucking crazy would we rate a society today where child sacrifice is common? Why would one look to that society for moral guidance? by burtonmkzin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

How fucking crazy would we rate a society today that

  • "Cuts off bits of their kids' penises."

  • "Disses gays."

  • "Throws stoners in jail."

  • "Believes that they're being watched by an invisible sky being."

  • "Lets sociopaths rule their society."

  • "Believes that horoscopes are real."

  • "Believes that ghosts are real."

Etc etc etc etc etc.

Homo sapiens is not a very rational species, and people today aren't noticeably more rational than people in the past.

A friend asked me to take care of kids when he is raptured. How would you respond? by unrapturedatheistin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

A friend asked me to take care of kids when he is raptured.

Would you take care of his kids if he got run over by a bus?

Would you take care of his kids if a large percentage of the population suddenly disappeared and the kids were left?

----

Bonus idea: Tell him

"Of course I'll take care of your kids if you're raptured. But in exchange I get to give them one afternoon per month of instruction in "religion" or any topic of my choice, from now until they're 18."

r/atheism, I need help. by grizboin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

I really don't have any true facts to say that I don't believe there is a god.

Come on, this really isn't tricky.

Look around the room that you're in right now.

Do you believe that there is an actual live horse in there with you right now?

Are your reasons good enough?

Same thing.

You don't have to be Stephen Hawking or Pope Benedict XVI to have an opinion about this stuff.

What made you atheist? Was it an experience, were you raised that way, did you convert from Christianity to atheism? by TheMadHatter_9in atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

[reposting for something like the 325th time - ]

I've always been atheist.

I've never seen any good evidence for the existence of any god.

It just seems like common sense.

What do you think of a religious image aboard the ISS reddit? by walkingonairin atheism

Eh, for the workplace, I draw the limit at "small religious figure or symbol on the employee's bulletin board or desk".

IMHO this would be the equivalent.

So where is the political arm of /r/atheism? We have nearly 800k members. Where is the list of rational political leaders that don't use religion behind their policy making? Where's this sub reddit? by NGGYUNGLYDNGRAADYin atheism

[–]wonderfuldog 0 points1 point ago

Create it, then mention it in various appropriate subreddits.

The "advertising" isn't difficult.

The tricky part is finding people interested in the same things that you are, and convincing them that your subreddit is a good forum for discussing it.
