What philosophical terms should be in every educated man's vocabulary? by amarcordin philosophy

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

Give a human a fish and you feed him or her for a day. Teach a human to fish and you feed him or her for a lifetime.

This sucks.

How do you deal with loneliness? by Blurgblarghin introvert

tip: use an online dating service that has a good matching algorithm.

OkCupid comes to mind. They use 100 questions to gauge your profile. They also require you to rate the relevance of the questions and differentiate between your personal preferences on each topic and the preference you'd like your match to have. The questions themselves are proposed by the public, so, in time, the best questions tend to bubble up. That's how I found my gf and we have a very good match - she is INTJ and I am INTP.

I have no experience with eHarmony, but I heard they have a pretty good system too.

Ever get so lost in thought that you seem to go on auto pilot and then when you wake up you can't remember what you were doing for the last 10-15 minutes? by sndwsnin INTP

I have done that while driving. I would start a train of thought and my driving route just goes out of my mind. I'd suddenly realize I was off route some 10-15 minutes later.

Before there were internet and game addicts there were book nerds. In fact a good novel can be more engaging than the infinite threads of conversation here.

  • get a gf
  • keep one or two close friends, those who can talk about interesting things
  • family and the daily routine helps too
  • go to concerts (I love classical)
  • attend a weekly group (I have participated in a meditation group for 20 years)
  • take solitary walks and get some air, sun and watch people
  • reddit can be a substitute for conversation partners too; it has unlimited capacity for conversation in my pet interests, at any hour

Sometimes it is easier to use "man" and just go with the masculine pronouns (he, his, etc...) in the phrase than have "he/she" all over the place.

tl;dr - house wives sacrifice their future/lives for part of the team

Not true. She doesn't sacrifice her future. If they have kids and she stays at home to raise them, then she makes a choice to invest her life in her offspring. It is a pleasure to have kids and raise them and she is enjoying this pleasure.

If she doesn't have kids, then what is the problem? She can have her career.

I think both parents should participate in raising their kids wether they are separated or not, but no adult has an obligation to another adult to provide her/him with a lifestyle.

Demanding 50 million dollars at separation is obscene. She wasn't a slave, she was a free person in the meantime and she could have worked on her own business. It just perpetuates the undignified stereotype of women as "adult kids" that need a "real adult" to take care of them.

The "forever alone" as a psychological diagnosis - The excessive use of video games and online porn is creating a generation of risk-adverse guys who are unable (and unwilling) to navigate the complexities and risks inherent to real-life relationships, school and employment. by Loyoverin TrueReddit

In a weird way this is empowering men to be able to be more detached from sexual impulse. It is vexing to see men belittled as nothing more than sex crazed beasts. It is good in a way to have the women on the offensive - let them charm a nice boy out of his games, if they desire him. In the mean time the rest would be a little more dignified - no need to depend upon the other sex so much.

Reddit is introvert central. Just take a look at the count

  • r/introvert : 10,732 users
  • r/extrovert : 11 users

It's probably not quite 1000:1, but clearly introverts are the vast majority.

The desire to smoke is just a affirmation of an unsatisfied life.

This kind of demonising is not good - it does not lead to equanimity, especially if your craving is strong. Maybe you could try to be mindful while high/craving, then you could integrate this impulse in a creative way.

My World Religions teacher hangs quotes all around his room, and lets people take one at the end of every year. This is the one I got, and it's now hanging on my wall. by petthefurrywallin Buddhism

Enlightenment is a moment, the first time one loses the ego and perceives reality in a nondual manner. This experience opens the way, so that in the future access to this place would become easier.

After enlightenment the practitioner has already "felt" reality in a different way, but now he strives to mix this vision with his daily life and maintain it in all sorts of circumstances. It is one thing to enter nondual samadhi in a formal meditation, after hours of concentration, and quite another to be able to do it instantly in a moment of anger or intense sensations.

Yes, but can it make any interesting, verifiable predictions, or is it just a good fit to the present data?

I think the quote comes from

Before enlightenment, mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers. At the moment one is enlightened, mountains are no longer mountains and rivers cease to be rivers. After enlightenment, mountains are again mountains and rivers are once more rivers.

Before enlightenment people see things as separate external objects, that's why "mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers".

ATM of enlightenment a deeper reality is perceived, thus "mountains are no longer mountains and rivers cease to be rivers".

But after enlightenment the practitioner learns to live with his new insight and remain natural. He again sees mountains as mountains, but in reality he doesn't see them as before. He sees mountains as they really are, but lacking a better word, he continues to call them mountains.

I was suspecting this to be the reason, I was just searching for a deeper meaning. I mean, does anyone know how real Japanese girls react to sexy mishaps?

It can be embarrassing to be ogled, degrading to be objectified, and otherwise damaging to your psyche to be violated in these fashions, especially by people who don't seem to learn that you aren't interested.

I agree, but in this day and age when billions of porn materials float around the net at one click away, there is no great mystery to protect, it's just a human body. Everyone has seen naked bodies in all their glory, that is a given.

Both boys and girls are attractive to each other, but no boy kicks the girl who sees him naked in the head until she loses consciousness. There is a kind of extremism in the fictional girls.

I laughed too, the first 1000 times... but then it gets old. I mean, ok, he touched her breasts or saw her naked. He has a body too, and kicking him in the face for it is an order of magnitude worse. It's like they are extracting a fee for viewing/touching.

No wonder men become effeminate - the mainstream doesn't appreciate the testosterone driven action any more...
