Let's talk about multiplayer. by virtuous_din Torchlight2

[–]virtuous_d[S] 0 points1 point ago

I haven't gotten a chance to try and respec in the beta. What is the mechanic there?

Also, the reason I was curious about this is that the company is coming out of an all-solo torchlight, so there is a lot of potential for coop to suck because of a lack of ambition/experience.

I hope it's the work of one person or a single isolated group of people as the article suggests, and not a rekindling of the sort of random acts of violence the statistics given describe.

What would make walling recognizable is if he was tracking players through walls, and circling around corners to take shots at them. In all of this, he is looking past the corner, not at the wall, as he goes around corners. Maybe he hacks, but I don't see it in this video. Just looks like a guy with good reaction time.

I saw that, but it's a pretty normal thing for a scout in his situation to look up there after checking behind the rock. I wouldn't accuse someone of hacking because of that one thing which could easily be a coincidence. It is the only moment that looks like hacking in a 2 minute video -- I am pretty sure if you examined anyone's play you could find moments like that.

Umm... don't think he's walling. If anything the moment you highlighted shows that he doesn't - he doesn't anticipate the guy appearing with aim, and shifts over when he can actually see the dude.

bEAST tryouts scheduling update. by thisisnotgoodin tf2eastcoast

[–]virtuous_d 1 point2 points ago

I would like to add... don't sign up for the main team if you can't often make the game on Monday nights, if you can't make time to practice, or if you have a bedtime around 10pm - the games will often go later than that.

I'd like to, but I'm bad. :(

New Google Chrome add-on teaches you a language as you surf the web by nicksnarein videos

[–]virtuous_d 1 point2 points ago

What it's not for - learning to speak a language fluently. What it is for - getting practice recognizing words and hopefully building up your vocabulary.

It's not going to teach you a language, but as an extra tool for those that are using other tools, this is a great product.

Apparently my GF's roommates hate me. Angry FB message inside! by fault_tolerancein LongDistance

[–]virtuous_d 3 points4 points ago

Sounds like some boundary issues that your girlfriend needs to work out with her roommates. I would try to not get involved as much as possible - it is a pretty messed up message already, and kind of weird that these people are trying to go around her (their roommate) and talk to you (an acquaintance). You don't have any say in how they manage their living arrangements, so you are in no position to argue with this guy, which is probably why he is sending the message to you.

As far as what to write back, say that this really isn't your place to argue - this is something that they need to resolve with your gf. If they have any issues about who pays what part of the bills or about visitors, they need to work it out with her.

It's good that you told your girlfriend. Not showing up for mysterious reasons is obviously not an option.

On a side note, once everything is said and done your gf should find non-insane roommates :)

There are more and more sources these days - and I agree with most people in this post: these online lectures sometimes explain things better than lectures/books at tech. Either way, it's often good to hear a different explanation.

Marketing [SMBC] by solastsummerin comics

[–]virtuous_d 3 points4 points ago

SMBC always hits the best topics. You know the guy is good when the thread discussing the comic is full of the same misguided machismo that is being made fun of.

User interface design is an artform, that comes with practice and experience. Even with those things, user experience studies frequently reveal difficulties and issues in interface design that were unforeseen. The very fact that an engineer understands the internal workings of a device or a piece of software make it impossible for them to imagine themselves in the shoes of a new user. The result - phone systems and fax machines and tv recorders with impenetrable interfaces that frustrate and anger users.

If you want to read up on the principles of intuitive design, and get a good listing of how this engineering mentality can lead to some terrible design choices, you should read The Design of Everyday Things by Donald Norman.

Here's a quote from the beginning of the book:

'You would need an engineering degree from MIT to work this', someone once told me, shaking his head in puzzlement over his brand new digital watch. Well, I have an engineering degree from MIT. (Kenneth Olsen has two of them, and he can't figure out a microwave oven.) Give me a few hours and I can figure out the watch. But why should it take hours? I have talked with many people who can't use all the features of their washing machines or cameras, who can't figure out how to work a sewing machine or a video cassette recorder, who habitually turn on the wrong stove burner.

... Well-designed objects are easy to interpret and understand. They contain visible clues to their operation. Poorly designed objects can be difficult and frustrating to use. They provide no clues - or sometimes false clues. They trap the user and thwart the normal process of interpretation and understanding. Alas, poor design predominates. The result is a world filled with frustration, with objects that cannot be understood, with devices that lead to error. This book is an attempt to change things.
