I have done this in training before, people call it "Jitz with hits" which I hate btw.

It definitely does help you realize just how your game would stack up against actually being punched. For example an inverted guard doesn't fair so well :).

Not sure how it will fair as a sport though, it just seems like it's taking a watered part out of A and B and giving us a mediocre product.

It's strange, you make sense 100%. Then again, near the tournament if things don't go right in training, it plays with your mind leading up to the tournament :)...damned if you do and damned if you don't I guess :S.

I made a crucial mistake this weekend, up 6-0 with 40 seconds left, only to have them really rush to pass my guard, I then turned on my belly to prevent points and left my neck hanging...

Good article for those tournaments that allow weigh-ins the night before (Abu Dhabi pro trials for example).

But I don't think it will quite work for same day weigh ins. I mean it CAN work, but not recommended.

I'm in the same boat as you :).

I don't necessarily look for the sub as I'm looking to control my opponent/training partner as much as possible.

I look for a mistake that they make, and chances are (if they are your training partner) they will know what to expect from YOU. So perhaps you should throw them off and try something new?
