Films/Books Controversy Question by DIXINMYAZZin tolkienfans

[–]trips_over_own_feet 0 points1 point ago

I thought that the films were a 2D representation of a 3D world. That is, I think much of the depth is lost in the movies that was apparent in the books. In the books Gimli is a wise and respected character. He makes allusions to Gondolin, Nargothrond, and the Silmarils. The Gimli of the films makes jokes. Also Aragorn was shown as a man, who although, was revered and respected was still portrayed as a regular man. Denethor seemed more regal than Aragorn, yet Aragorn is of the lineage of Elendil who was of the lineage of Elros who was the son of Earendil.

probably done to death, but what are your biggest gripes with the film adaptations of LotR? by AKABigBlackin tolkienfans

[–]trips_over_own_feet 2 points3 points ago

My biggest problem was the world of Middle-earth was diminished. Much of the lore and history of the world was left out because it would have asked more questions than answered. Some characters had to be altered for the movie to make more sense.

I thought the movies were great, but they are nothing compared to the world created in the books.

Gandalf and Radagast by gnomesanein lotr

Gandalf went alone to Dol Guldur. Saruman advised against it and Radagast was not a very active wizard.

Opposite side R/L? Or opposite side Front/Back?

Might sound stupid, but I'm imagining both.

How different do you think The Hobbit movie will be from the book? by Daedhelonin lotr

[–]trips_over_own_feet -1 points0 points ago

The movie will be a visually pleasing portrayal of the book, but it won't stay true to the book because that wouldn't make money.

Can you draw Middle Earth from memory? by MrTimmerin lotr

[–]trips_over_own_feet 2 points3 points ago

Nice to include Beleriand, but I think it's to the west of Middle-earth. It was flooded when Numenor was sunk. The Ered Luin in the West of Middle-earth are the Blue Mountains in the east of Beleriand.
