David Foster Wallace:

Think of the old cliché about "the mind being an excellent servant but a terrible master".

This, like many clichés, so lame and unexciting on the surface, actually expresses a great and terrible truth. It is not the least bit coincidental that adults who commit suicide with firearms almost always shoot themselves in: the head. They shoot the terrible master. And the truth is that most of these suicides are actually dead long before they pull the trigger.

I'm afraid not. But I've made it visible again and added my upvote.

Sounds fascinating! Is it tacky to ask about cost?

Rescued from spam filter, sorry for any inconvenience. Any surprises from inside the tank, or was it pretty much what you were expecting?

Unlistenable Music by mszegedyin classicalmusic

Seeing this sorts of comments always makes me a little sad, because (and it's really important to note that I say this with a complete absence of condescension or anything like that) it's a shame you don't experience the absolute joy (visceral and intellectual) I get from the music of Shostakovich. Definitely including his piano concertos.

On the other hand (and this makes me more than a bit sad, truly) I don't get much out of listening to Mozart (though I'm learning to like Bach! Really!), and I really truly wish I did.

Where can I find program notes for tone poems and the like? by OhGodImSoRonPaulin classicalmusic

[–]theturbolemming 2 points3 points ago

I don't think such a database exists. Your best bet might be, say, the NY Phil Digital Archives; try searching for a piece or composer and you'll have dozens of programs pop up, complete with notes. But they're not written by the composer in most cases.

At a metronome mark of dotted crotchet = 152, this is the ending from hell. by pitythechildin piano

[–]theturbolemming 1 point2 points ago

Actually, a lot of Kabalevsky's piano music is fairly well known. Unfortunately, his symphonic and chamber works didn't really fair so well, apart from that accursed Comedians' Gallop...

For those on this side of the Atlantic, that's dotted quarter.

I only know a little jazz. This is bad. Help! by BrendyBoizin Jazz

[–]theturbolemming 0 points1 point ago

Certainly :) My last played tracks...

  • The Ever Evolving Etude, by the Avishai Cohen Trio

  • If This Isn't Love, by Cannonball Adderley

  • Blackbird, by the Brad Mehldau Trio

  • Split Kick, by the Art Blakey Quintet

  • Porgy and Bess: Prayer, by Miles Davis

  • In A Mellotone, by Gerry Mulligan (with Ben Webster)

  • Heart and Soul, by George Shearing and Joe Williams

There's quite a variety in there, so don't expect to dig it all... but I pretty much adore everything there.

I'm assuming it's 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon - 1 tpt, 1 tbn, 1 hn, no tuba - timp and perc - 1 vln1, 1 vln2, 1 vla, 1vc, 1cb. It might mean that that's how many parts you have to write (ie, you're writing one violin 1 part for a section of first violins) but I'm not at all sure about that. Ask your prof.

I'll pull back out the only right to brag I've claimed in my life: I performed John Adams's piano duet Hallelujah Junction a few months back. Wonderful music.

I'm composing a cello concerto, and my teacher recommended I listen to this one for inspiration. Bloch - Schelomo by und3r_Scorein classicalmusic

I gave up cello after eight years to focus on piano and jazz sax... and it's things like this that really make me miss it. Perhaps the most expressive instrument.
