This reminds me of the philosophical argument that motion is an illusion...I can't get to a wall without first going half the distance, and I can't get to half a distance without going half that distance...and so on until you get to the conclusion that you can't even move in the first place. That's very simplified...

C.S. Lewis made a fascinating point by the way...most of our "questions" are just words put together. Just because you can make a sentence doesn't make a sentence logical. Some things are just nonsense. For instance, how many miles are in the color yellow? It's just nonsense...Maybe that can be applied to certain subjects...

Yeah, there is value in knowing how to do things the long way.

I've never been briliantly great at math, but I did ok. I wanted to reply to your post with a similar subject where there is value in doing it the long way. I'm training to become a pilot and there are many parts of aviation where learning the long way is a great idea. Using the E6B flight computer is one. If we began our training by using the electronic E6B, we'd just plug in numbers and get an answer. But by learning how rate and time and such work together using a pen and paper, one learns it much easier. I'm forever grateful that my flight instructor made me do fuel equations and calculations in the air and made me figure out how much fuel was needed to get to a certain airport, etc without the help of an electronic calculator. It's the same with learning how to fly with analog instruments...it's very easy to use your knowledge of gyros and pressure indicators to apply to digital instruments, but it would be extremely hard going the other.

To sum up, it might not be fun to learn the hard way, but in the end, you won't die.

How many X-Fundamentalist Christians now atheists are on r/atheism? by chameleonjunkiein atheism

I mean...obviously I'm here on r/atheism. I read it for the insight and commentary. I still go to church with my wife and I like the community structure there. Heck, the Bible is still fascinating to me. However, a shift in my world-view is definitely occurring. I no longer take the Bible as an infallible book inspired by God. Do I know if God exists? No, I don't. Do I have the inkling that there is a God? Sure. Probably not the Judeo-Christian God as portrayed in Scripture. An intelligent force behind the universe? Oh heck yes, I do. I'm still a very much spiritual person, and I'll continue going to church with my wife, occasionally raising my hands and singing songs to a really cool idea. The songs about Jesus being a sacrifice and rising again (save the zombie jokes for a more appropriate time) fascinate and strike a chord in me. So I'll keep going on this journey, allowing my world-view to change along the way. We'll see where it takes me. I doubt it will take me to 100% being certain of no God, but I'm definitely not going back to young-earth creation fundamentalism.
