[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what are the biggest misconceptions in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

[–]tendimensions 1 point2 points ago

I read a great article in Scientific American years ago back when they were arguing about Yucca Mountain. It proposed deep sea drilling into the crust in the middle of the Atlantic. Tectonically stable and unreachable by humans for hundreds of thousands of years. I always thought that seemed like a brilliant solution.

Doesn't this have to do with the probabilities involved? My understanding of how ionizing radiation could cause cancer is that it would have to hit just the right cell in just the right place to cause just the right mutation to cause cancer. So while there are plenty of ionized particles shooting at you it's still just a matter of chance. Your granite countertop could have generated that one single mutation event or working thirty years at Three Mile Island might. It's just a matter of rolling that dice more times.

Did anyone ever confuse "take it in the face" with "pressed ham"?

Probably too late to this thread, but my brother says he knows kids in Chicago during their high school years that would run the subway lines between stations. Seems pretty fucked up to me.

Funny, seems like you're making the exact generalizing you're accusing the OP of doing.

So we should eliminate all fictional instances of anything because if the same thing happened in real life it would be a horrible thing? I guess we'll start with eliminating all "offensive" jokes (which is probably the majority of them) and from there we'll cleanse all television and movies. Let's not stop until we've banned books too.

Fiction is not the same as real life and recognizing the difference is an important step in maturing that I was taught as a child.

This put a hilarious movie-like cut scene after cut scene of Mom busting in on you one after another, different times of day, different chicks, and whatnot.

Completely agree - especially runway models. The arms and legs are very, very long. It's actually a bit odd looking at the tail end of the bell curve I find.

Ok - so did Romans ever vomit on purpose during giant orgy parties so they could keep eating or is that just legend too?

Way to bail on your GF, dude. When you realized the mistake did you just flop your head over and start snoring?

I agree, most are probably atheists, but I honestly don't think they are displaying it as pro-atheism as much as pro-evolution. The FSM is a better pro-atheist symbol I would think.

It's definitely mocking a segment of Christians, though.

[–]tendimensions 2 points3 points ago

So are you saying that making a mocking statement against Christian creationists with a Darwin fish isn't worth it because you end up either offending or looking silly to the majority of other Christians?

If so I'm not sure I'd agree with that, mainly because I find the idea that someone could allow themselves to exist with the cognitive dissonance necessary to deny evolution simply to believe more literally the words of their holy book hugely offensive to humanity and what it means to be rational. People can be religious, but denying science is to deny our ability to think. Frankly, I wish more Christians did display Darwin fish and get loud about evolution.

Parody Christian creationists, yes. But it's a pro-evolution symbol, not pro-atheist.

Says who? I've never seen the Darwin fish as an atheist symbol, that's what the FSM is for. The Darwin fish is explicitly aimed at Christian evolution deniers. I'm not certain many theistic evolutionists would have a problem with the symbol.

[–]tendimensions 1 point2 points ago

It's not an atheism symbol, though. It's a pro-evolution symbol directly aimed at mocking Christian creationists, not Christians in general. Accepting evolution is not anti-religion.

But it's pro-evolution, not pro-atheist. It's specifically aimed at Christian creationists. What would an evolution accepting Christian think of it?

A friend of mine found this on her car... by Justgot_herein WTF

[–]tendimensions 3 points4 points ago

Only mocking evolution deniers. A Christian accepting of evolution I can't see how they would see it as mockery.

Specifically aimed at evolution deniers who were Christian. It's not anti-Christian, it's pro-evolution.

Only if they see evolution as conflicting with their religious beliefs. If a Christian accepts evolution I don't foresee what insult they'd take from it.

"Homer, you need to use an open faced club. Like a sand wedge."

Homer looks up daydreaming and says:
