If one pound is equal to 1.5689 dollars, and the majority of America is overweight, why is our economy so bad? by DontSayAlotin shittyaskscience

The pounds have to come from somewhere, which, in this case, is the American economy.

I don't know how many people have said this, but you are awesome for making a low-level, good language.

I don't blame people for struggling with addition and subtraction (I need a calculator for calculating stuff fast myself), the problem is that they don't understand it. People don't need to be able to calculate fast (it's a waste of time with calculators anyway), they need to be able to understand the operators, and that's what the educational system should focus on.

I found out how to calculate compound interest myself, and in a few seconds. The problem is that people don't learn enough pure mathematics to be fluent in it.

I knew it was close to a quote from someone, somewhere, but I didn't know where. :P

Yes, but you don't have to know how to calculate compound interest, you just have to know what it is and what exponentiation is.

How about the fact that men die much earlier?

You should probably only bring that up in conjunction with the fact that women's health receives more money than men's health and health in general combined, because it could also be of biological reasons.

Actually, it's simple if you understand what exponentiation and compound interest is.

Well you prove my point beautifully...

Huh?

a factor and a constant away from xy . Let x = 1 + r/n, y = nt.

[–]tailcalled 6 points7 points ago

Okay, what I meant was that it was only a factor and a constant away from xy . Let x = 1 + r/n, y = nt.

Isn't compound interest just xy ? I'm pretty sure they learn exponentiation.

If you wish to build a ship, you should not hire people and buy materials. Instead, you should teach your people to long for the ocean.

Why do we measure probability in real numbers? by tailcalledin math

Isn't 'almost never' an example where infinitesimal probability would make sense?

Why do we measure probability in real numbers? by tailcalledin math

By infinitesimal I mean a number x such that for all reals epsilon greater than zero, x < epsilon, yet x > 0. One example is in hyperreal numbers.
