What does TwoXC think of the women who get guys (who they are not interested in) to like them for the heck of it?

tadrinth 1 point2 points 1 month ago[-]

Rationally, I can see this sort of thing as a young adult exploring their own abilities and options. It is very powerful and important to know your own strengths and capabilities. I can certainly see that the "holy crap I can do this" impulse develops long before the impulse to consider the other person's feelings. Rationally, I don't blame them.

Emotionally, as a male who has been on the receiving end of this shit in middle school, it fills me with blind, incandescent rage. One of the things I look for in potential girlfriends is sufficient social awkwardness to be fairly sure they aren't pulling this.

PS: Don't name your daughter Jessica. Jennifer isn't too great either.

So reddit, what is the most beautiful video game you've played?

Super Metroid, for the atmosphere. Legend of Mana, for looking like an animated painting. There are some very pretty zones in World of Warcraft.

This game was made by an Intelligent Design group (check the credits). Sneaky bastards.

Disgaea: Where to start?

tadrinth 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

Ah, yeah, I know that one. The idea is that everyone in the entire stage is invincible except for whoever stands (or is thrown onto) the one stage that isn't invincible. You throw the enemies on top of each other to merge them, making sure to start with an enemy with low physical defense. Then you beat the high level enemy to death for lots of XP. The only problem is, it takes forever to merge them all and then kill the high level guy, especially if you merge them until their defense gets so high you can't do any damage.

There's a stage later on that has 9 enemies in a 3x3 block on bonus experience squares, that one is retarded for leveling. You can gain about 10 levels in one sword attack by one-shotting them all, but it might take a bunch of Braveheart spells to get their attack high enough.

PS: Etna is way better with an axe than a spear.

Question concerning AP classes...?

tadrinth 3 points4 points 1 month ago[-]

I took AP US History, Chem, and Statistics junior year, and then took AP English, Physics, Bio, BC Calculus, and Modern European History senior year. I took all the tests, got all 5s, and walked into college with 56 credits under my belt. I was practically a college junior right off the bat. Absolutely worth it. Take as many AP classes as you can handle (ideally as many as possible), study with friends, then have a life in college.

As to whether or not you're going to struggle, that's hard to say. I had a 1590 SAT, if that helps any.

Look at it this way: the AP test costs what, $60? Taking the same class in college will run you thousands of dollars per semester. The AP test is insanely cost efficient. Plus which, taking lots of AP classes and acing lots of AP tests puts you in good running for scholarships, which save you even more money.

There are a bunch of levels that are obviously there for leveling purposes. Especially the ones that have enemies on +xp zones or in convenient AOE layouts or both.

What exploit are you referring to?

however, they were surprised to discover that children in lesbian homes scored higher than kids in straight families on some psychological measures of self-esteem and confidence, did better academically and were less likely to have behavioral problems, such as rule-breaking and aggression.

tadrinth 0 points1 point 1 month ago* [-]

I am very happy to hear that children raised by lesbians do well, as I'm all in favor of people being able to raise children. It is a useful study in showing that these kids aren't disadvantaged and that therefore we should be ok with lesbians raising kids. I doubt anyone that doesn't believe that already is going to be convinced otherwise, but still, yay. My issue is that the scientist is speculating that the parenting is responsible for her findings, when in fact the study did not show that. In retrospect, at least the author is clearly speculating, and the journalist didn't report those speculations as fact, so perhaps I shouldn't complain.

The variation in IQ is something like 70% heritable by adulthood, so yes, it is entirely possible that lesbians have genes associated with confidence and high academic performance. It is a legitimate alternate hypothesis, if a politically incorrect one. It's also entirely possible that the scientists is right and that parenting practices are responsible, but I find that to be unlikely, since studies of adopted children show that they strongly resemble their birth parents and their personality and IQ are uncorrelated with that of the people who raised them.

Every science article ever ends with the author talking about their next study. They do this for a few reasons: one, because scientists always wish they could do bigger and better studies than they have budgets for; two, because doing studies is what they do for a living, and three, because if you don't do more studies you don't get any grant money and you either don't get paid or have to deign to teach classes.

Anatomy help! (graphic question)

tadrinth 1 point2 points 1 month ago* [-]

Pretty sure I've read about women who had complete duplications of their reproductive organs, thus having two vaginas and two uteruses, and being able to have kids normally. Go get checked out, and it may take x-rays or ultrasounds to figure out exactly what's going on, but don't panic. The word here is probably "unusual".

Children of Lesbians May Do Better Than Their Peers

tadrinth 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

This doesn't look at adopted kids, therefore everything said about parenting is based on zero evidence; the improvements could be entirely the result of genetics. Correlation != causation.

however, they were surprised to discover that children in lesbian homes scored higher than kids in straight families on some psychological measures of self-esteem and confidence, did better academically and were less likely to have behavioral problems, such as rule-breaking and aggression.

tadrinth 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

Does not study adopted children, therefore does not separate the effects of genetics from the effects of environment. It is impossible to tell from this study whether children born to lesbian mothers would show the same improvements in normal households. There is zero evidence here that the parenting has had any effect at all; the effect could be entirely genetic. Correlation != causation, dammit.

I want to make a pull-up bar that mounts to my wall, I just don't know how to go about designing one. Any suggestions?

tadrinth 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

I just bought the "Iron Gym" thingummy, which is a pull-up bar that goes in a door-frame. Way easier, it just hangs there. The only problem is that you can't close the door without taking it down. It was maybe $30 at Target.

Christopher Hitchens: "It's much worse to see a woman drunk than a man: I don't know quite why this is true but it just is."

tadrinth 0 points1 point 1 month ago[-]

Drunk women are vulnerable to rape to a degree that drunk men are not.

Note that he doesn't say it is worse when women are drunk, or that women are worse when drunk; he says that seeing women drunk is worse.

Perhaps he is saying that there is something fundamentally disquieting about seeing impaired judgment in the risk-averse gender.
