I am page at the Texas convention. What can I do to help? by Franticlysanein ronpaul

[–]summernot 0 points1 point ago

Follow the rules, help out the party, present a positive example of a Ron Paul supporter and make friends with all types of conservatives.

If you have a smart phone and are told that you're allowed to use it, if you see anything notable, capture it on video (or at least audio).

See you in Ft Worth! :)

Taking baby to the Caribbean. A few questions. by joispeachyin Mommit

[–]summernot 1 point2 points ago

A sunsuit/rashguard and sunhat would be good to have. Otherwise you'll have to smear sunscreen in her hair, which is kinda ick. I like the iPlay sunhats that tie under their chin. Mine tries to yank his hat off, so the chin strap is handy. Reusable swim diapers are easier and vastly more effective than disposable. Many counties/cities won't permit disposable swim diapers in their public pools, because they just don't work. Bring along a couple of diapers when you go to the beach. That way if one gets soiled you have a spare at the ready. Also, swim diapers are not meant to be worn when not in the water and will not hold pee. So change her into it once you get to your water destination and not when you set out, because inevitably she will pee along the way. You may be aware of this already, but not everyone is, and it's an annoying discovery to have to make.

You should be totally fine with the resort food, I would think. But if you want to be safer, maybe stick to non-buffet food for her, since buffets can be hotbeds for norovirus and other bugs.

Be sure, of course, to stock up your travel med kit with all the necessities: - baby ibuprofen - baby acetaminophen - gas drops - thermometer (rectal, temporal, whatever you're using these days... if rectal, bring along some vaseline packets) - benadryl (you can only get kids' benadryl, but if she has a reaction, it can be used for infants. Check with your pediatrician on dosage.) - saline drops - aspirator - medicine dispenser (dropper, syringe, etc) - whatever else... Maybe some first aid stuff like bandaids and neosporin?

Consider bringing insect repellent. Many places in the Caribbean can be buggy. I like Herbal Armor. Depending on where you're going, it may be a good idea to avoid walking on the beaches around sunset, as that's when biting insects that live in the sand can be a nuisance.

The squeeze pouches work really well when traveling. There is also a brand of freeze-dried, powdered, organic baby food called NurturMe that is really good stuff. This would weigh less than hydrated baby food. You can add breastmilk, milk, water, whatever, to reconstitute it.

Are you bringing a car seat for the airport transfer/on the plane? You will find much sanity is retained if she has her own seat on the flight. Plus, she'll be a lot safer.

How strollerable is the resort? Would a carrier be better/good for a supplemental way to transport her? Ergo would be a good choice, since it would pack easily and still offers lots of support.

Diapers fit well in side pockets of luggage. It's amazing how many of them you can fit. Also, airlines generally have a 50 lb weight limit, so watch that with your bags, especially with the baby food and baby wipes. Those are heavy.

We bring along our son's white noise setup (ipod speakers/ipod) and a baby monitor when traveling, so we can be out on the balcony while he falls asleep and still keep tabs on him. Or, sometimes accommodations have had a large enough closet or secondary space for a crib, and we'll tuck him in there for sleeping, so he has his own little space (and we have ours). Then the monitor comes in especially handy.

Don't forget some toys for the flight and for the stay. A couple of new things, or toys stashed away for a couple of weeks before you leave and then brought out fresh are always a hit. At that age our son loved his nesting/stacking bowls. These are just awesome for travel, since they pack so compact and can be played with in so many ways. He still plays with them nearly daily, usually chunking them down the stairs to see how far they will go. ;)

Maybe check with your pediatrician about vaccines and what, if anything she might need before the trip. If she's due for any boosters at 12 months, they might recommend she go ahead and get them before you go, for the added immunity.

Have a great trip!

With Eye On Future, Billionaire Investor Bets On Ron Paul by galt1776in ronpaul

depends on how you define worth and value. Some would say you can't determine that until gains are taken, especially when things are so dynamic like they are at this point.

The IPO actually was not successful. It opened at 38 and closed at 38, and it only managed to tread water at the end, because FB's underwriters artificially propped up the stock.

A new US study has suggested that babies who are fed from their mother’s breast gain less weight over their first year by Gueldin breastfeeding

[–]summernot 1 point2 points ago

That's about how much my son was at 4 months. At 12 months he was about 26-27 lbs and is approaching 29 lbs now at 21 months. He has stretched so much that he's still in all the same summer clothes that we wore last year -- except now they fit like they should. :)

AT his 18 mo appt our pediatrician was out on maternity leave, and so we saw an NP we'd never had before who was filling in. She looked at his chart and said she was concerned about him sliding down the growth chart from 95% for weight to 60% and had us come back in 6 weeks for a weight check. We thought that was pretty absurd but humored her. The whole time we were thinking, "do you know what he would look like if he still was in the 95th %ile??". Imagine a walking michelin man! lol! He continued on the 60th %ile line, so they were happy.

His height has been around the 75th %ile, which we're thrilled about, as my husband and I are both short. I'm 5'1.5" or so, and he's about 5'5". We're hoping he can hang onto some of that length. :)

He was 9 lbs and 22" when born at 41.5 weeks. 15" head!

Yes, I think I'll be there. Due to some maneuvering, ironically, by some Ron Paul supporters in my SD, I'm an alternate not likely to be seated often instead of a regular delegate. But I still plan on attending.

Do any republicans on this sub-reddit oppose same sex marriage? by daynightninjain Republican

[–]summernot 0 points1 point ago

It becomes an equal rights issue when a partner can't make power of attorney decisions for his/her significant other, or when heterosexual couples can be eligible for spouse benefits but same sex couples can't, or when only one partner can be on the birth certificate as a child's parent, or when dealing with probate issues, to name a handful.

While I agree that our government may have bigger fish to fry right now, I can also understand why same sex couples are raising this issue.

oh- and for the record, I'm in the camp that supports stripping the function of facilitating marriage, a religious institution, from government auspices and leaving it to the churches.

In the case of my state, they book the convention space three years in advance. Of course, I'm in Texas, and we have anywhere between 8,000 and 12,000 delegates at each convention. Only three convention centers in the state can even accommodate the event. But still, for other states, booking a year or more in advance would not be surprising to me.

Conventions are a bit arcane, so she may not have understood enough about how a party convention operates to know that that is what happened -- or she may not have known a way that she could explain it for the viewers in a way that was easy and quick to express.

Oklahoma: After A Few Old GOP Walked Out Of The Convention And Had The Lights Turned Off Without Conducting The Party Business, The Delegates To The State Convention Moved The Meeting Out Side. Your Job Is To Make Your State Recognizes This Convention And It's Delegates by fairwellIMJAin ronpaul

[–]summernot 0 points1 point ago

I'm sorry you were voted down so much. Not sure if you edited your response (since I don't see the quote jstagurl mentions below in it)...

Anyway, my asking this question was a bit rhetorical. There is a difference between Paul's support and Romney's support. Romney has more people who feel lukewarm about him while Paul has fewer people supporting him but who are strong supporters and more committed. As a result, in situations involving a greater time/effort commitment, Paul's support tends to dominate, while Romney manages to win when only, say, 15 minutes of a person's time is required for them to do their part.

This is much more articulately expressed here.

The bigger point is that if Romney wishes to be the Republican nominee, he needs to find a way to energize his base as Paul has done. One of the great advantages of a two-staged nominations process (straw poll/caucus/primary followed by the convention process) is that it tests candidates in both aspects of campaign organization and execution. Neither Paul nor Romney are offering Republicans the complete package, as other nominees have done in past elections.

One of the reasons for this is the massive amount of rule changes the RNC made this election, which effectively shifted more of the process to the grassroots. It was not at all the desired outcome, it seems, but in the end it is making for a much more dynamic nominations process.

In my own state, add to this the fact that Texas is in the midst of a huge redistricting controversy which has delayed its primaries until literally the week that the state GOP and Democrat conventions were to be held. Delegates to the state conventions had to be selected before the primaries even took place. Pretty crazy! And even more crazy is that so many other states managed to be in more upheaval than we are. Our convention, in the end, is expected to go relatively smoothly.

Why can't Romney win delegates like Ron Paul? by alanXin politics

[–]summernot 0 points1 point ago

He has most of the delegation votes. That's different.

The delegates themselves may not be Romney supporters, even though, in binding states, they will cast their vote in the first round for Romney.

CAUTION: Romney Campaign Is Paying People To Gather Information About State Delegates by ronpaulkidin ronpaul

[–]summernot 0 points1 point ago

This is I think pretty common for state conventions. The last two I have been to I have gotten calls from all kinds of campaigns, PACs, etc. Delegate lists are published by the counties, and anyone can obtain them. Voter logs from primaries are also public info in my state. This indicates what party you're affiliated with and the party's primaries you have voted in in past elections.

One thing I'm surprised more people aren't doing yet is cross-referencing this info with political contribution logs. This, of course, is also public info now.

And all those silly petitions to demand that Romney and Paul debate and to censure Rince Priebus and whatever else is out there are simply tools to gather names and contact info for those who are politically involved with certain leanings. So don't do those. ;) They're silly anyway.

Thinking of pumping milk after Bf stops to use in place of cows milk. Has anyone done this? by redhead1728in breastfeeding

[–]summernot 0 points1 point ago

One thing that comes to mind is that if you pump and then freeze, the freezing process destroys most of the antibodies that are so great for the immune system. Even storing milk in the fridge diminishes these. All the nutrients will be there, but a little bit of the goodies bm has will not.

Also, I wouldn't necessarily assume that because your first stopped nursing at 14 months this one will stop as soon. My son is still nursing at 21 months -- and I'm 20 weeks pregnant. I'm really not even producing anything anymore, but he just likes the closeness. We are definitely tapering now, but if I wasn't pregnant, I know he'd still be nursing at least a couple of times a day.

The workers at all-inclusive resorts are pretty much paid and work in a similar way, except the resorts don't supply their housing or meals.

I'm sure you could find lots of articles about the oppressive working conditions and exploitative pay these workers get. I know I have come across them in the past.

You can go on a cruise for $100 per person per night, inclusive of food, non-alcoholic drinks, lodging, entertainment and activities.

For food, you'll be eating steak and lobster, and it will be all you can eat 24x7. Your room will be small but well-appointed, and your room steward will come twice a day doing turndown service in the evenings. Entertainment is usually pretty enjoyable (bands, stage shows, acrobats, night clubs with different types of music, etc) Activities range from dancing lessons to basketball and volleyball.

And, of course, there are pools (multiple) and deck chairs to do nothing in.

Also, don't forget you're going to places on the boat, so you'll be seeing beaches or glaciers all along the way.

If you were to price out a similar trip on land, you would be hard-pressed to spend less than double for something comparable.
