I would recommend getting a cover just to keep it out of the elements. Might slow down the aging signs a bit (rust, fading, etc) but I don't think there is anything major you have to worry about.

Personally I started on a Honda 600 F4i. I little less tuned than the 600 RR but still. Quick. I felt comfortable with it because I had practice with dirt bikes when I was younger and friends' bikes when I was older.
