Chutzpah or No Sense of Irony? Zionists allege that Palestinians "insist on posing as victims" by Occidentalistin worldpolitics

[–]socks 12 points13 points ago

Absolutely - even Israelis have protested the extremist actions and ideas of their fellow countrymen. But it seems that the protesters are in the minority. It seems that most Israelis and Zionists will say and do nearly anything to justify the extremist atrocities of the majority. It's not Chutzpah. It's no sense of irony, or rather, narcissism.

Just to clarify - the gedanken-experiment did not mention a serial killer. All of the people you noted in the experiment - I would drag all of them out of the Louvre. If the gedanken-experiment is to include a known serial killer, I would not value that person's life. In agreement with you, I do not believe in absolutes. There are very few serial killers in the world, and only these people I would not save, if I knew in advance that they were not serial killers. It is unlikely that I would know them, because, as you note, the person would be a "complete stranger." I would save ANY complete stranger. This answers the gedanken-experiment. Though again, I do appreciate that you pose an important question that we should consider critically.

OK - though this is just my perspective:

I would drag all of those people out of the Louvre. That said, I am deeply saddened that so many works of art and books - especially books - have been lost to history, because these are extremely important for cultural development. So I appreciate the argument about the benefits of the many over the benefits of the few (eg. the 99% and the 1%). Though if I have to make a quick decision, I would have to favor a person's life over that of an object. If, however, the unconscious person was a known serial killer or Hitler, I would definitely leave them to die, because they have taken the lives of others. As for the person guilty of sexual assault that you note, yes, this would be a difficult decision. One could see his condition as treatable, that he can reform his life. (Many of us often do not believe this, but it is nonetheless something to consider, and such reform has happened.)

I'll have a go: I'd drag the complete stranger to safety. So long Mona (as much as I'd hate to see her go).

I also wonder about this, considering the number of earthquakes in Italy in the past decade. There are two major fault lines, and yesterday's earthquake is at the north end of the north-south line.

"No Gaiety for Obama": The Obama campaign didn’t plan for the issue to come out quite this way. by secaa23in AnythingGoesPolitics

[–]socks 0 points1 point ago

I do not agree with the author. Regardless of Newsweek's idiocy, polls have and will show that a majority of Americans are not worried about gay marriage, and indeed respect Obama's mention of his personal opinion about the subject. Independent voters will also respect this approach.

Outstanding smoke, what was your experience? by fr0ntl1n3in cigars

[–]socks 0 points1 point ago

Yes - the somewhat over-the-top marketing strategy does make me wonder about the cigar quality. Not that they are necessarily bad cigars, but they are also not necessarily 'all that' either. The strategy is both interesting to watch and somewhat off-putting.
