99% those stickers belong to an enlisted wife/girlfriend, and usually they are not as...refined in their ways, nor are they used to the demands of the Army (all they know is the security of the benefits you mentioned), so they're a bit whiny when their husbands deploy and they're left with all the kids. Also, a lot of people have hard time moving across the country every two years or so. I'm going to be a little conceited here and say that it's usually the people that complain the most that have it easiest, and typically people that really get fucked by the Army don't really say a lot if anything- they just deal with it (keep calm?) and move on. And actually you're right on the money- even the newest recruits make 15k plus signing bonuses (?), and iirc, most make about 25k. No tax at the PX, but the commissary does charge a surcharge (which is usually about 4.5% and the groceries are usually sold at pennies above wholesale-good stuff too).

Hey, I've calmed down a bit since then (a bunch of shit not working at work plus some still lingering bitterness about the accident I mentioned, made me kind of rage-y lol), but I'm glad we see eye to eye (even if it's a bit unexpected on my part lol). And I'm going to agree with you again as well. I've had lots of friends that have been at that point- the military calling to them like a get out of jail free card- and I don't want to say that I've talked them all out it...but I have. Here's my best advice to someone who wants to join the Army- Do you want to kill someone? Do you want to go to war? If dying in a foreign land for your country sounds like the adventure of a lifetime, then the Army is for you. I am by no means saying it will happen (even if you ask for it- yes, these people do exist-one of my father's only regrets is not getting a combat patch), but every person I've known that had successful military career was more than willing to go to war and kill someone. And if you're not willing (read: biting at the bit with murderous ecstasy) to do that, then you need to reevaluate all your options.

Also, since you mentioned that Marine guy wanting to go private, yes, I have run into lots of douches like him, some of them are even balls-ey enough to be like "I'm sexy, and I know it!" And I'm just like, "I'll respect you when you're a full-bird (Colonel)/ fought in real war, until then you can fuck off."). I tend to notice that real veterans don't make such a big deal of their service- it was just one of those things you were expected to do. Like someone else said, the older generation is much more respectful (how they failed to pass this on...). I can honestly say, as horrible as this sounds, I've heard of people talking about how they're gonna get an easy ride in the military doing research or something and won't have to do a whole lot even in the way of basic, and when I do, I kind of want them to get thrown to war. To me, they were attempting to screw the army/military over by not offering real service/weaseling out of basic obligations as a military service member, why shouldn't they screw you over in return (why not zoidburg?)?

I will also say that one of the things that pissed me off more than the bumper stickers (this one's more personal), is my sister's ex's mother, who was absolutely beside herself to see her eldest son serve in the First Gulf War (to the point she needed hospitalization), but doesn't bat an eyelash that her younger son is now doing the exact same thing, but he's doing it as a contractor and profiting off these people's suffering, so that's okay (btw, he's doing some blackwater type shit, so fuck that guy).

Speaking of which, kudos to you for sucking it up and paying your dues- I know it sucks, but it's better than being tied to an organization that will screw you if they know they can get away with it, for 5 years of your life. Although one of the friends I talked out of joining the military was a drag queen, so take that for your "How the hell do you go from frying wings, to wanting to kill someone?"

Also, I do the same thing with "you", and usually rely on context clues to see if it's "you" as in me specifically, or a general "you" (again, why context clues were not passed on to some people, or even why english doesn't have an actual word for "you all"...but I digress even further) and even if you came on here and were like "FUCK YOU SLEEPYHEAD, YOU PIGGLY BITCH" I would not be offended since it's the internet, and I would probably laugh that you used the term "Piggly bitch".

I came back way too late just to say (once I started thinking about it) Modest Mouse has a song for every break up occasion (my favs are "Little Motel" and "Satin in a Coffin"). Additionally, "My Black Dahlia" by Hollywood Undead works too. But my ultimate favorite is "I love you but fuck you" by Tech9. All of these are good for the situation you have seemingly described. But that last one is probably the best IMO.

I'm an army brat and I still work closely with the military base I live next to. That being said, I got a couple of fucks to give out...

  1. Fuck those people who downvoted you. You didn't wish death on our soldiers. Even if you did, this is a thread about surprising opinions, so they need to get over it. I know people flip shit about supporting the troops, and while I'd be lying if I said I didn't support them (I literally do so I can paid...) it's your right not to. Just because an opinion isn't popular, doesn't mean it isn't valid. Which leads me to...
  2. In a way, I think I agree with you. Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying, but while I get sad when I see soldiers dying, I understand that they signed up for this. They knew what they were getting into, and if they wanna be pissed that they signed up just to get the GI bill and ended up in combat, fuck them. Even my father's friend who was KIA on american soil knew/accepted the risk and (dare I say it) died doing what he loved. Admittedly because of said experience I feel bad for people who have loved ones die in things like helicopter accidents (or really any freak accidents at all), since (in the case of the army) they're probably gonna get a call 6 months later saying they found more "DNA" (aka small body parts you should bury/cremate) but I digress. And all the more reason to avoid such untimely deaths.
  3. While I'm at it-I fucking hate anyone that puts any kind of military related sticker on their car. Yellow ribbons, unit stuff, or the worst..."Army Wife-toughest job in the Army" FUCK YOU. Especially the yellow ribbons and that last one. Just...fuck you. People don't understand why I feel this way, but I just do. I dunno, it just pisses me off because to me it feels like your begging for sympathy, and I fucking hate shit like that.
  4. Probably gonna be just as unpopular, but chances are, if you couldn't figure out a way to not join the military...you probably needed to join the military.

I was thinking about this a lot yesterday for some reason. Probably because it was the anniversary of my mom's friend getting that call about the DNA. Or because I just happened to be thinking about this. Whatever. In any case, my apologies that this became rambly.

tl;dr-fuck down-voting haters, fuck people that join the military that don't know what they're getting into, and fuck yellow ribbons/military bumper stickers.

Obviously you missed the point of this thread, and my story. Also, this happened while we standing in a stationary line (i.e. waiting for an elevator to take a group of people). The fact that I wondered about them being German, before I heard anything they had to say is led me to believe that more than likely they were germans, but I guess they could've been Austrian. And trust me, I didn't think anyone could cut me with just 18in of space.

I wasn't baffled about stereotypes about America. I totally understand why that girl thought what she did. Most Americans quite frankly, can be rather dumb. In fact, your attitude reminds me of the time my friend told her french friends that Americans don't really say y'all, and another american girl ended up saying it a bunch in a conversation later.

It is! The only animal that I feel really compares in intelligence and coolness, is a wolf (hence the nickname "Sea Wolf"). Also, being female, I like that Orca pods are matrilineal. And anytime I see a pod hunting something, I always want it to die-I lol'd the first time I saw the video of them "playing soccer" with a live seal. Also, the scene in Blue Planet where one ambushes the seal out of a wave is one of my favorite scenes in anything. XD

I'm definitely thinking about just buying a Sea World (not that I can afford one, but ya know, in that billionaire senario...). I'm torn though- I love them so much, that I want them to be free, and at the same time, I love knowing I can go see one up close pretty much whenever. In the meantime, I have my tattoo, which I think is the best power animal tattoo ever (better than my friends' anyway LOL).

I was told before this particular event that Germans maintain close space proximity in lines, and several different people have confirmed this. And then it happened to me, as I was wondering if the people were German (which is what OP was asking about). So in a word, yes. Problem?

Some Parisians friends of mine just got back from NYC for the first time, and were gushing about how it was so much better because people didn't judge you by what you wearing, things were open late/never close etc. Meanwhile, I had been there as well and liked Paris better.

Also, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but I had heard that Germans will stand literally right next you in a line/queue, and if you leave any space in front of you they will cut you in line. I was waiting for the elevator at the Eiffel Tower one day, and I was standing behind a boy that was by himself; or so I thought until I looked out a window and turned back ten seconds to find that in the 18 inch space between us, two more people he knew had cut me and his entire family was right behind me, his father was so close his chest was touching the back of my arm. I didn't realize they were German until I heard them speaking, and by then I didn't care, but I almost said something to them in german anyway.

Also, on this same trip this English girl from Yorkshire was amazed when I started speaking japanese with this japanese boy. Her exact words were "Wow! I didn't know there were smart Americans!"

They're mind too.

I know you're saying that they were your favorite animal, and at the same, I think "Why yes, their intelligence is another amazing feature of theirs."

And they do look classic! I tell people who wonder why I like them so much that they're like dolphins, if dolphins were badass. (Just for clarification, I know they are both porpoises, but the people I usually say this to make a distinction between "flipper" dolphins and what they call Killer Whales)

This is one of the reasons why Orcas are my favorite animal (and the only tat I have), and every damn time I'm watching a nature show that says sharks are the top predator of the oceans I'm like "NO. THEY'RE NOT." fifty pound sacks of potatoes

I actually knew a woman who tried to pray her disease away. She had breast cancer. by mrcloudiesin atheism

[–]sleepyhead24601 0 points1 point ago

My friend was about to graduate college, so she was about 22. I'm being brutally honest here, so bear with me, but seriously, I wish I could say she was being that unselfish. She really was not prepared nor was she seriously thinking that she was actually going to die (she left no will, and as mentioned in a comment below, my friend had to close her bank accounts and have her car repossessed). She really had been suffering from some kind of bipolar or serious depression for years, and she had done other completely selfish things before. Part of what I think led her to not seek treatment was the fact that her youngest daughter who was 15/16 at the time had recently moved in with her father, because she couldn't take her mood swings and craziness anymore (because of this she lost her house, amongst other things). But don't feel sorry for my friend's little sister either- she's a fucking spoiled cunt (and I don't use that term lightly).

Also, your second paragraph made me very sad, and my condolences go out to you. I'm kind of awkward about these things, but please allow me to give the obligatory "That sucks, I'm sorry" by saying that you should have never had to be the one to carry the guilt of whether to end your mother's life or not, and please don't feel guilty. Faced with the decision your mother was in, I don't know what I would've done. Please let me also say that I'm still a little bitter about my friend's mother because (as my comment below sheds light on) her death made things a lot worse for my friend, than it would have if she had at least attempted some kind of treatment (she didn't even stop smoking, so I mean, even praying might have helped more than what she did).

[–]sleepyhead24601 0 points1 point ago

Yes, I'm sure the misery of my friend supporting her mother through cancer treatments, as opposed to the misery of caring for her and watching her die two months before my friend's college graduation, not leaving any kind of will, causing my friend to have to allow her car to be repo'd and deal with all of that junk, leaving her oldest daughter an orphan, and missing my best friend's wedding would have been just as miserable. I could go on about the misery my friend's suffered because of her mother's death, but I think you get the point.

[Edit] Also, I would disagree that she did give herself the cancer from all the cigarettes she smoked (and just being generally unhealthy)

I guess not. Regardless of my feelings about his practice, we were just grateful that somebody managed to get through to her in time. Although I guess it was also a comment on how sick she got, considering even the faithhealer told her to get treatment.

[–]sleepyhead24601 1 point2 points ago

I think this (once I read your comment, I remembered her doctor said the same thing, but was a little more optimistic about it) combined with her chronic depression were what caused her to just let the cancer take her (and she didn't want to lose her hair). She was very unhealthy anyway, and I found a notebook of hers when we were clearing her stuff out where she wrote a bunch of stuff about how everyday she wished she was dead. To be honest, I still have mixed feelings, because as glad as I am that's she's not so damned miserable anymore, I kind of hate her for what she made my friend go through, all because she couldn't make a decision to save her life (or not).

My aunt had hodgkin's, and decided to pursue natural methods along with just praying about it. It was starting to spread towards her lymph nodes; her neck had a huge lump on it (she said this was good, because it would go to her lymph nodes and from there her body would "cleanse it out"). When she started feeling worse, she decided to go to a faith healer. The faithhealer took one look at her, and for some reason (I mean it, I really don't know why he didn't just take her money) he told her that God spoke to him and told her that she needed chemo immediately. So, naturally since God said it was okay, she got chemo and she's alive to this day. Everything went better than expected.

My best's friend mother killed herself this way. She wasn't a Christian, but she hated her life, and when she was diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, she didn't fight it and died 6 months later. She died the day after doctors gave her two weeks to live (my friend thinks she purposefully OD'd on the morphine hospice was giving her), but not before admitting that she didn't know cancer would be as awful as it was.

So I feel ya (especially when I think about losing my dog :( )

Ah, but it is; the most conservative percentage I saw was 60% and that was just from the wikipedia article (I couldn't find any polls or research to support it- I did however find multiple sources saying 75%). Unless you wanna pull the statistics thing of "Well surveys aren't always accurate"

And a google search came up with the same results on every poll I researched, if not more.
