Java 7 was only very recently made the default downloadable version on java.com.

Just short of one month, actually. That means Java 7 has really only officially been out -- i.e. regular users having it installed -- for less than a month. So saying Java 6 is irrelevant is ridiculous.

I'm a big fan of wombat which is light-on-dark. I have some problems with eye floaters and reading against dark backgrounds hides them. wombat comes with Emacs 24.

The official Java tutorials are actually very solid. There are a lot of crappy/outdated Java intro books out there, so hopefully you didn't get any of those. You'd definitely be better off with the online tutorial in that case.

Once you have the language understood and know the basics, read Effective Java to learn good practice and then Java Concurrency in Practice to learn how to properly use threads -- two books every Java developer should read.

When you ask a question like this, you should elaborate more on what's going wrong rather than just saying "it's not working." What specifically isn't working? The code you pasted is missing a page4() method and has an extra bracket, so it's not going to compile as-is. When I fix these, everything looks fine to me, except that your page3 shows picture2, possibly giving you the illusion that it's not advancing.

There are some really important points to make about your code, though. This is clearly a time to use arrays. Any time you're numbering your variables you should consider arrays (at the minimum).

Image[] picture = new Image[35];

Then access each with picture[0], picture[1], etc. You're almost certainly missing the point of the assignment if you don't do it this way.

I would also put the list of JPEGs in a String array, too, as a static class field.

String[] jpegs = {
    "101 Dalmations.jpg",
    "Aladdin.jpg",
    /*...*/};

Then, instead, when you make your images array, you would do this so you don't hardcode the count,

Image[] picture = new Image[jpegs.length];

If the count is hardcoded, any time you add a new image you need to edit the code in multiple places, which is increases the chances of mistakes.

With this setup, you can load these in a nice loop, cleaning up all that repeated code.

Even better, skip out on the array and use a List instead. But perhaps your course never covered this,

List<Image> picture = new ArrayList<Image>();

Your abuse also extends to methods. You shouldn't be writing a method for each image you want to display. That's the whole point of using an array or a Collection and probably the point of the assignment. You already made a mistake because of this, by matching picture2 and page3(). Instead, you should use numClicks to index into your array/List.

}

Adding a new image to the display should cause no more code changes than adding an entry in the String array. Under ideal circumstances, this image list would be stored outside the program and read in at runtime, but that's probably outside the scope of the project.

Rule of thumb for the day: if you're copy-pasting your own code around, you need to immediately stop and rethink your approach.

No, it only initializes from the Shape, not even keeping a reference to it outside the constructor. Besides you usually translate a shape with AffineTransform, which doesn't modify the Shape but creates a new one, so it would be impossible for Area to track the Shape.

Murder one guard in every town. In Skyrim it's super easy to kill guards in broad daylight without getting caught, but I remember in Oblivion it being difficult, even with getting caught.

I've actually done this twice, both Lisps, and I strongly recommend doing it. In doing so, I learned so much about what's going on inside real language implementations. For example, some of the Java VM's behavior made no sense to me at all until I implemented the functionality for myself. Same for perl.

People are asking you why you'd write your own scripting language when good solutions already exist, and that is a good point to make, but it sounds like you're doing it for your own education. As I said, you'll be better programmer for it. Just don't expect to create anything that's very useful to other people!

The first language was created by myself and it was purely interpreted, dynamically scoped, and referenced-count memory management. I learned a lot, but it sucked.

The second one I wrote with a friend. It compiled to a custom VM, lexically scoped, garbage collected including the ability to save the entire running state to disk and restore it later, macros, reader macros, closures, continuations, two green thread implementations, foreign-function interface (for GUIs, SDL, ncurses, etc.), and full object system (a mini CLOS). It was written as much as possible in its own language, including the entire compiler. Because of this, we had to write a bootstrap interpreter and parser for a subset of the language. The interpreter would load a minimal environment, then load the compiler, which then compiled itself and the environment. Then the interpreter would hand off control to the VM, which would run the compiled compiler on the rest of the system including a new parser and start the REPL. Rather than bootstrap on every run (slow), the save-state memory management was used to load the one-time bootstrap system into memory at every start.

Despite all that work and functionality, I still wouldn't use it to write anything serious.

So, if you're looking to learn how to write your own, I'd obviously recommend writing a Lisp. Lisp parsers are easy to write by hand, so you don't need to waste a lot of time on a parser. You also automatically have the internal data structure defined (linked lists, etc.) for your parsed code tree for your interpreter and/or compiler. I recommend writing it in a low-ish level language that requires manual memory management, like C. This will require you to implement that as well.

When I started on the first one, I didn't read any books or papers on languages. I just went off of what I could remember from college and my understanding of Lisp. I started by getting the data structures in place and creating a parser to convert source text into data structures. Then I worked on code to use those data structures. Once you get going, it's pretty obvious what you should be doing next.

What level of skill do you expect these script-writing players to be at? If I was developing such a script as a player, the way I'd prefer to interact with the server would be through Git. I'd make my edits locally, commit them to my local repository, and then push it to the server when I'm ready to try it live. That way I'd get source control, local backups, and the ability to use my own editor. Recompiling would just be a post-receive hook on your end, rather than having to monitor the filesystem for changes.

Another option is to have them telnet/ssh into the server which, rather than presenting them a general-purpose shell, takes them right into (locked-down) vi or nano -- ala nethack.alt.org with .nethackrc files.

No television here. Technically, we've only been TV-free for a couple weeks now. It was a 24" CRT and we actually had to trash it because no one's interested in getting CRTs even for free anymore. It belonged to my wife, bringing it with her when she moved in 4 years ago. It was never used all that time except to occasionally play some Playstation 2 and Xbox games. I've never personally owned a TV.

I occasionally watch some TV shows and, less often, movies on my computer (all torrented), but actually most of my passive viewing is YouTube videos. I'm not talking about a bunch of 3-minute videos; the average length is probably about 25 minutes. There's so much great, (legitmately) free entertainment out there that I've really lost interest in watching movies in the last couple years. It's been a year since I've stepped foot in a movie theater.

Yup, run your SSH server on port 443 and use dynamic port forwarding (-D) to create a SOCKS proxy and you can pipe literally anything through it.

Very clever! Since it's vectorized this is pretty speedy, as far as Matlab goes.

Edit: Generated a 4000x4000 at 255 iterations in Octave, taking 7 minutes, saved it to an image, scaled it down: mandelbrot.png.
