I would say it entirely depends on the type of job he does. If he is putting in the hours (and more) outside of work, then it can be justified.

On the other hand, the first set of employees are the most important as the smaller the company, the larger the impact each individual is.

The default status of a startup is failure.

Having goals gives you something to focus on, objectives are the ones that you can fail or succeed at. If you don't succeed at your objectives, reexamine why and try again. Examine the feasiblity of your objectives and ensure that they are realistic, and try to have realistic goals. But don't be disheartened just because you don't get it 100% on your first try. At least try to be progressing towards something.
