Unexpected Accident at electric plant in Saint-Petersburg, Russia by Siberian_644in videos

[–]sheerheartattack 0 points1 point ago

Imagine a bunch of stressed commuters on their way home experience a complete fail of the electric system. They abandon their consumptive ways and build a utopia in harmony with nature.

I guess that verse didn't make the final cut.

What is the worst state in America and why? by ChemEBrewin AskReddit

[–]sheerheartattack 12 points13 points ago

New Jersey is strategically xenophobic. If you're not from New Jersey, you are almost guaranteed to leave with a negative impression of New Jersey. And that is just the way New Jersey natives like it, to limit their exposure to outsiders, and to make sure they don't come back.

If you're from New York, the first thing you're going to see is Newark. If you're from Philadelphia, the first thing you're going to see is Camden. Coincidence? I think not. But there is one place we keep open to outsiders: The Jersey Shore, of course. And how do you get to the Shore? That's right: The Turnpike. Going to New York or Philadelphia? There is a well-defined path to which you are limited for that as well.

So in summary, 99% of outsiders who pass through New Jersey only ever see 1% of the State - and not the good 1%*. And that's just the way we like it.

* We are the second-wealthiest State in the Union. You don't think that, in all our opulence, we live in some sort of "gray and lifeless" wasteland? Hahaha...

Half of the world seems to think that defense attorneys are intrinsically evil, and the other half of the world seems to think that prosecutors are intrinsically evil. Name any kind of lawyer, and someone who has no idea what they are talking about is going to hate them for it. It's silly.

Nonsense. Deep fried is good, but wholly unnecessary. Some people just do not understand proper oven technique.

For your education:

Alton Brown, Good Eats

Part 2

Chef John, Food Wishes

Buffalo Sauce

Deep frying may be faster if you happen to have an industrial deep fryer, but there is little to no improvement in flavor with regard to chicken wings.

What are some of your philosophies on life that people don't seem to understand. by Systemscheckin AskReddit

[–]sheerheartattack 3 points4 points ago

For the most part, I agree - but in many circumstances, the lack of a question mark creates a certain tone that may only be conveyed by its omission.

For instance, compare "What?" with "What."

Or perhaps "Really?" with "Really."

It is a less expressive tone that indicates disbelief and sarcasm, among other things.

Belle is disappointing, to say the least. The entire film is an exercise in Stockholm syndrome.

The Beast kidnaps and imprisons her father, and later kidnaps and imprisons her instead, where she suffers from countless abuses, including starving and intimidation. Regardless of any mitigative measures, these acts alone are sufficient to establish a felony conviction that would place the Beast in jail for several decades, in the modern era.

But it's okay because in the end he's really a handsome guy. With a big...library.

It's not that their point of view is "stupid." There is just no scientific evidence or even rational thought to it.

Um...so how exactly do you define "stupid"?

I mean, the comic is worth a chuckle, but if you're going to qualify it like "if this isn't perfect I don't know what is" then you're just being rather stupid.

That's neat, but it is by no means fast, especially when you consider that the first step (not shown) is to place the shirt upon a flat surface, which alone takes just as much (or as little) time as folding a shirt regularly.

I need help with bullies. (I have autism) by Psych0Fir3in AskReddit

[–]sheerheartattack 28 points29 points ago

That's the problem: In almost any context, if you're an asshole to an asshole, it seems justified. People with autism are more or less by definition assholes. It's not their fault and I would never blame them for it, but it's objectively true. Children of course do not understand the concept of autism, so they experience some sort of sense of justification for their behavior. It's kind of like when we see a bully bullying a bully - we do not mind it and in fact we welcome it. Because we see it as justified. That's the problem I think.

And I am not just referring to their patent lack of social skills. Of course, persons with autism may be targeted for being "different" regarding their behavior and lack of social competencies, such as their withdrawn nature and preference for spending time alone. But with autism and bullying, this isn't just a simple case of "pick on the kid who is different."

In addition to the aforementioned "tattling," autistic persons are very self-centered and lack empathy. They often see and treat people as objects. They can be aggressive, impulsive, and irritable, and can act up with intense tantrums and outbursts if they do not get their way. In many ways, people with autism are bullies. So if you didn't know about autism, you'd just think an autistic person were an asshole, and you would treat him as such. That's the problem with children - we can tell them about autism, but even throughout high school they can't really understand the concept. The autistic kid is just "the asshole."

[–]sheerheartattack 21 points22 points ago

I don't think it's so much "the West" as it is Western gamers. I call it West Side Story Syndrome. Everyone likes to think that "there's a place for us" - a utopian paradise where we may embrace our passions, and more importantly where others will embrace us for those passions. Somewhere to escape to, when the time comes...

So Seoul becomes the Eden of eSports. Tokyo becomes the Arcadia of animation. Paris becomes the Elysian Fields of art and culture. Even New York or Los Angeles become the Shangri-la of success, prosperity, and opportunity. But the reality of it all is that all of these places are really just the Xanadu of zilch.
