Here's something that's helped me, think of yourself of less as a designer and more of a craftsman. There are plenty of people out there who are better designers than me -- but right now I have more work than I know what to do with because I provide solutions that are cost effective, easy to use, and attractive. If you start thinking about how you're making your client's (or end user's) life better, it takes the focus off of you and your place in the design world.

I concur with people's recommendations -- but also encourage you to check out the stream mentioned here via VLC. You never know what you're going to get -- which is half the fun. That said, I'd like to cast my vote for Giant Spider Invasion. VAAAAAAAAANNNNNNCCE!!!!!

Gap replaces their well known logo with garbage. by [deleted]in web_design

[–]sfnick 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The tragic thing is their first logo from 1969 is much more engaging than what they just came up with. And why would you go to the all this trouble and expense but still use the old blue box in such an half-assed-ghost-of-logos-past-web-2.0-is-so-over-way.

A little bit of Gap trivia -- as I used to work for the company naming jeans -- the discs on the side of the first Gap store reflected the fact that they originally sold both jeans and records.

Saying that employers shouldn't hire inefficient, sick people is a disgusting mentality. Are you including the disabled in those ranks? Maybe we can be like India and all of our blind citizens can have drastically reduced life expectancies because they aren't useful enough to do manual labor. Sounds lovely.

Meanwhile, kiss goodbye most of the productive scientists in your society -- the lowest common denominator folks running corporations are far too interested in short term profits to focus on long term research or planning. Scientists won't get a chance to do real research, high tech funding will be a thing of the past. Make sure to welcome your rapidly commencing "Tragedy of the Commons" scenarios since no research will be being done to prevent them. And the biggest corporations will buy out the legal system too. Free market, right?

Going out and "making connections" is not something bright people should be wasting their time doing. They aren't Amway salesmen or Insurance peddlers. Part of government is to systematically abstract away and fund the talented people, while keeping the masses from being too destructive. It works fairly well.

Genuinely talented Americans don't have to "go Galt" like right wingers would have you believe. Only the working class would believe that BS, since they aren't likely to know anyone genuinely talented. In the meantime, the smart folks are working for Google and Amazon, making high six figure salaries and sending their kids to Waldorf.

And yes, you are misrepresenting the teaparty mentality. Your lack of willingness (and others in the working class) to pay taxes doesn't mean a thing. Society will extract value from you regardless, because that's how society works. It's how the human race moves forward. We've chosen that approach because living in chaos with a mob mentality makes life dirty, brutish and short.

And regarding schools, we agree that poorly raised children are the result of ignorant parents. Who else will break the cycle if not a third party arbitrator? That is the goal of public schools. Currently the system is failing in giving most students much of a better opportunity, which is why school reform is a priority all around the country. Within a few years, the public school system will look very different, and the results will be much better.

You can't multiply wealth by dividing it.

Sure, but you can generate more wealth by improving efficiency. And a society that allows half of its population to get sick because they can't afford proper healthcare and checkups (for instance) is not efficient.

People get content in being poor and earning a low income, they then hate big business and wealthy people.

You are mischaracterizing the teapartier mentality.

In my city our public school spends as much as the really good, not the top level, private schools.

The better results from private schools tend to be because parents who care enough to send their kids to nicer schools are generally better parents in a myriad of other ways as well.

I don't think the teabaggers themselves know what they are advocating against.

Have you seen some of the video interviews? What are they against? Communism? Global warming?
