City of Los Angeles Anti-Graffiti Request System by Suicidal_Elmoin LosAngeles

This is amazing, thanks for posting this. There are a lot of murals in my neighborhood, and I get sick when I see tags over murals. That said, I have a piece of street art in my home, but it's ART, I get sick to see shitty tags over murals and solid art. True street artists define the community or themselves as a flavor of their own, and NEVER would tag over a mural. I hate to see that.

Metro Approves ‘Subway To The Sea’ Tunnel Under Beverly Hills High School by AAjaxin LosAngeles

I know a BHHS alum who's livid that they passed this. She's happy to have brown people clean her house (she still lives at home) but Dog forbid they get to use a subway under her school. The irony is she's adopted, and by blood she's Latina. Maybe she's just classist, I don't know. Her mom is a socialite, it would be hard to be normal growing up like that.

An overwhelming majority of U.S. citizens want deep and immediate cuts in military spending, according to a new poll. by batgirlsingsin politics

[–]sfgeek 6 points7 points ago

The problem is, Schoolchildren don't have lobbyists. I worked briefly for a defense contractor, they couldn't possibly be more in bed with Congressmen. I knew slews of people that were completely incompetent that made six figures working for defense contractors. The Military Industrial Complex feeds money to the people that they want in office and vice versa. A computer security 'expert' (AKA someone with some skill, that can get clearances) can be billed out at $450 and HOUR to the government.

I'm thinking the only reason it hasn't happened is that, based on what I've heard, when things go south, they go REALLY south. I know that the guys can't flush their own toilets, lest their guts get sucked out in the decompression tank. Apparently, they spend a month decompressing, or did 30 something years ago at least. A month on, and a month off at least. Those guys are insane, they make tons of money, but if anything, and I mean ANYTHING goes wrong, they die, hopefully quickly for their sake.

A family member directed undersea pipeline operations from a submersible (mini-submarine) in the North Sea around the time I was born. He told me if you were on the oil platform when a large wave came, it would suck you into the sea on the way out, and at that temperature, you probably would last less than a few minutes, he saw a friend get sucked off the deck if I recall. After that, he moved back to the US.

That, and the divers had to breathe Heli-Ox (or is it just Heliox?) Diving so deep you are breathing HeliOx is an indicator that what you are doing is insanely likely to kill you. "Deadliest Catch" claims to be the most dangerous job in the world, but it's not, I believe it's Deep Sea Welding that takes the cake. My family member watched more than one man lose his life on the job in just a few years.

Skin has come a long way in CG, but fur and hair is still incredibly hard to do well. It's why Aslan in the Narnia films looks a little off. Fur also takes many thousands of times the CPU power to render well, so they often have to cut corners.

Oh and P.S: Remicade is what did the trick, it was a little scary the first time, as nobody knows if you will have an allergic reaction and possibly die, but I was desperate enough to give it a shot. Remicade is AMAZING. first time in 13 years I've been 'normal.'

That thread changed my life. I managed to arm myself with a lot more information and finally find a doctor that was willing to take drastic steps instead of patchwork treatment. I'm in remission now (although only because of ridiculously good insurance.) That thread is what I think of when I think of what reddit has done for me. I ended up worse before I got better though, I ended up with cataracts as a side effect from the prednisone and had to have surgery, and the insurance at work didn't kick in for a while, so I had very bad vision for a few months. I now have to wear some serious bifocals. A small price to pay in the big scheme of things. Also: My eyes (well, the implanted lenses) reflect in the dark like a cat's eyes. It's badass.

I can stop reading at say, page 109, but what I can't do is read page 109 at the same pace as everyone. That's like telling you you're a whiner because you can't reach then end of page 109 fast enough, so we're moving on, tough shit. I wouldn't call the kid who couldn't keep up a whiner. Would you?

I'm just stating the obvious, but you've been here for 8 months. Reddit is a very different community from 6 years ago. Not saying it's a bad thing, it's a lot more diverse in opinion, 6 years ago it's where you'd go for say, science news. When you get diversity, you by nature are going to have less brainy types overall. Look at YouTube's progression.

I find it disheartening that the mere use of the word 'mainstream' immediately brands something as 'hipster.' It's just a fact, Reddit is a very mainstream site with a huge diverse audience, but it started out as an incredibly geeky place to visit.

When you're a natural speed reader it's almost impossible to read at a slower pace, your brain processes things to form contiguous sentences at a fixed rate, slowing down causes comprehension to break down. Reading... Slow.... Ly..... Or..... At ........Le.....ast...... mo.......re...... slow......ly ....th..annnnn..... yo.....ur .... na.......tur.......al............pa.............ce. Is incredibly frustrating.

That sucks! We had a very understanding teacher, she just would say "Ok, here's the book, and here's the subjects of the tests, you can take them whenever you want, in any order you want, they just have to be done by the end of the semester." She was AWESOME.

One kid just did them all in a week and fucked around on the Apple II for weeks. I was the procrastinator, I needed pressure, so I waited until the last week and then did the entire semester's worth.

College was awesome, they raised the bar so high that 20-30% of the kids had to repeat the class, sometimes 3-4 times.

If you've ever been to a Reddit meet up, you'd realize that most Redditors ARE the smart kid that got bored with the material. The LA reddit meetups are geektastic. Well, at least until recently, as reddit is now more 'mainstream.'

That's ridiculous. That's a great way to quickly dishearten a teacher, and leave us with the worst, not the best of the breed, which these days, happens way too often. When I was younger, bad teachers were given almost too much power.

When I was being a little shit in elementary school, I got paddled. I didn't learn well in a slow, monotonous environment, and so I became a distraction until I found a teacher that "Got me." She let me write code to do my math homework for me and print it out, and I became president of Science Club and state champion. All it takes is one great teacher to bring a kid back from total loss of the love of learning.

It all changed when they put me into a GATE program, but I still had a teacher who punished me for showing up the other kids. She was convinced my parents were doing my school projects for me and tried to keep giving me Fs. We had a project in 2nd grade to build castles out of cardboard paper towel rolls. So, I lighted mine with LEDs and used a little solenoid to open the cardboard 'gate' when you pushed a button. She gave me an F and hid mine away on parents night.

She went on a rampage when I was tested into the GATE program. People who hate children shouldn't teach.

The problem is that High School sets the pace for the lowest common denominator, and forces everyone to learn the same way. The problem is, a lot of people don't learn things very well in such a structured environment. We probably should determine how a child learns early on, and put them in the right environment. I did horribly in classes that bored me, and aced the ones that I liked. The very subjects that bored me as a kid I've come to love as an adult, because I don't learn very well in structured environments or with a set pace. Looking at my other friends now that had the same difficulty, they're all very well educated people on a variety of topics, but the key is that they taught themselves. I went to a college that was structured differently than High School, and I thrived. Well, except for the Operating Systems class, damn that was hard. We had one semester to write a working operating system, file system and a and a text editor. I somehow managed to get a B the first time in the class, mostly by hardly sleeping for a few weeks.

No, no they aren't. I can think of a very long list of jobs that would go to the more well groomed candidate given equal qualifications. Software engineers are just about the only professional job I can think of where long hair isn't much of a factor. And at that, in 15 years in tech, I've only known 1 executive in tech with a ponytail. Another field where it's acceptable is tech theater, as well as Hollywood grips, techs and camera guys, in fact it's considered almost a badge of authenticity and legitimacy to have long hair or unusual facial hair in that industry. And of course, if you're in a Metal band. It doesn't matter if your ability to do the job is equal, having long hair is going to hinder your ability to get it in the first place. It's not fair, but it's very, very true.

I actually thought he was a she in the picture on the left. I'm going to go with: Definitely a good idea to cut his hair if he's a guy. I think he's a guy, but I'm not entirely sure. (Honestly.)

It's worse than that, a man is in jail for something like 10 years for having a speck of pot residue on his shoe. I will never, ever travel to Dubai. They jailed a couple for kissing in public for several years.

Just watched a young woman pull a toddler out of oncoming traffic only to get shouted at by the mother for touching her kid, what kind of shit has just flabbergasted you Reddit? by strawmanalertbitchesin AskReddit

[–]sfgeek 2 points3 points ago

Most likely the mother was actually angry at herself for almost letting her child get killed, and she vented on the young woman because she couldn't handle it, her only way of dealing was taking the hero down lest it shine a light on her instead.

I feel like most organized religion has a similar effect on people. "I don't like dem gays. Because Jesus."
