I'm an inch away from picking up the double bass, however, I already foresee many issues. Honest and brutal advice needed. by OOOH_WATERin doublebass

Agreed. I even had a teacher before I started taking the upright seriously in college, and I still had tons of bad habits to correct when I had my teachers in college.

No it was all from my teacher in college. She learned from her dad who is the principle bassist in my symphony. I'll see him in a couple of weeks at rehearsal, so I'll ask him where he got the info and let you know.

I was taught to let your arm relax at the shoulder to allow the weight of your arm and speed of the bow to start and play the string. Of course, when I play forte I press, and when dynamics get louder, I usually press more. This technique could be wrong. I don't ever get any pain in my right hand, though, and I just played all 85 minutes of Mahler's second symphony this weekend. No problems. Also, keeping all your joints bent is important as well as relaxing while you play which takes a long time to accomplish.

I saw the Hungarian Radio Symphony play a couple of weeks ago, and they all had them too. So did the Berliner.

Do you press the bow into the strings a lot?

Reddit, who is your favorite classical composer and what are some must listen classical symphonies? by ankit_20in classicalmusic

[–]scootalicious 2 points3 points ago

I'm playing Mahler no. 2 right now and it's bad ass. It's arranged for a massive ensemble. I also really enjoy shostakovich no. 5 and Dvorak no. 9. The Mendelssohn violin concerto and fingal's cave are great. Somebody else said Stravinsky and I like him a lot too. It's pretty endless have fun.

Why I Fish. (And where.) by pinkygonzalesin flyfishing

True. I shoot on an SLR that was given to me, and it takes amazing photos. You can't beat the natural grain of 35mm film. I started checking the six lens Zuiko kit that came with it on ebay and it's worth a lot of money. The guy didn't know what he had.

That looks like it was shot on an SLR. Was it?

Probably, but not totally sure yet. I've only seen pictures of the hall we're recording in, and we're bring all three capsules for the Oktavas (omni, cardiod, and hypercadiod). We're recording the piece three times. The first will be the premiere, and the following two will be done specifically for video and audio without an audience. We'll have plenty of time to find what sounds best. The violinest is the Concert Master for the Budapest Radio Philharmonic.

They're so handy we're actually bringing two. One of the camera ops is bringing one as well.

We're recording a solo violin performance, so we're trying to avoid mic stands during the premiere performance. That's also why I'm bringing the stereo pair of Oktavas; they'll be in the room.

EDIT: ...and they're actually e912s.

I was busking with my bluegrass band in Whitefish Montana when all of a sudden John Cusack shows up with a video camera and videos us playing. He had a couple of drunk friends with him, and one of the guys notices that we have harmonicas. He demands to play a tune with us on the harp, but because of sanitary reasons, we refused. he kept asking and asking until finally he offered $50 dollars for one. So, we ended up drunkenly playing an E blues with him while Cusack videoed it. I wonder if he ever watches it.

All ages shows are so fun. I'm too old for them now, but when I was in high school we would have a great time at our all ages shows. It was a challenge to find a venue that would let us do them, though. One time, we got banned from the college union building because someone smeared their shit all over the bathroom walls. Sucks we lost the venue, but the night was legendary. Actually, that was the first time I stayed up all night.

Good luck. Just remember, no one is really listening, and they don't care. But seriously remember to have fun and you'll be fine.

This kind of sounds like it could be a master/slave issue, but that kind of thing only happens when you're digitally linking interfaces. You're only using the one?
