Scary by Cinnamon_Noin books

Came here to say this. Scariest/saddest book I've read.

How do you guys feel about narration in a film? Do you think it's lazy or enjoyable? by BluntMastermindin movies

[–]scarredwaits 1 point2 points ago

I know that generally it's considered bad/lazy script writing to have narration in films, but I generally enjoy it because it makes the film feel a bit more like a book. Last example that I remember enjoying was Sunset Boulevard.

Greek neo-Nazi party expels journalists by croutonsoupin worldnews

[–]scarredwaits 0 points1 point ago

Drasi was the rational choice, I was very upset that they were buried beneath the 3% threshold for parliament entry. I guess it's not surprising that our fellow Greeks did not vote rationally given the panic that has gripped the country in the past couple of years...

Thinking of buying a Kindle Touch as a present. Need advice. by scarredwaitsin books

[–]scarredwaits[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks. The main motivation for getting the Touch is that my girlfriend is likely to do a lot of dictionary lookups as English is not her first language. Having to touch the word must be a lot easier that moving the cursor to the correct position.

Thanks for the information! I somehow forgot about covers (I use mine without one), and it must really make it easier to hold it while reading. Search is not so much of a issue for me, but it's good to know that that's improved too. I think I'll go for it!

Any books you could not finish? by KingVidorin books

[–]scarredwaits 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the warning, but I wasn't planning to watch it. About all the other books I mentioned: I think that at some point I'm planning to attempt them again, I haven't given up for ever. Possibly over an extra-long holiday, and maybe equipped with reading notes!

[–]scarredwaits 1 point2 points ago

I gave up really early on on Ulysses, Gravity's Rainbow, Infinite Jest. All the big ones I suppose. In every case I felt like I wasn't "ready yet", but I'd like to attempt reading those books again at some point. On the other hand, I regretted sticking with the The Magus by John Fowles, I felt cheated in the end, and wished I had given up 2/3 into the book. Woody Allen said this about the film adaptation (ok, not really fair, it's about the film, but I feel the same way about the book): "If I had to live my life again, I'd do everything the same, except that I wouldn't see The Magus."

It makes you work for it (it even contains simple encrypted text at some point), but I think it's really worth it. The most sad and most scary book I've ever read...

It's weird, because I hadn't realized, but when I read the article I was reminded of the scent of unwrapping my Air. They say that the sense of smell is one that is most connected to memory...

In 100 years time, what authors of our era do you feel will be most commemorated? by kieranmcgin books

[–]scarredwaits 0 points1 point ago

It seems that I will have to get a Kafkaesque job to be able to afford that book. How appropriate :-)

What do you mean "on the cheap"? A used copy if Nightmare Factory seems to be £50 on amazon.co.uk! Unless I'm missing something...

I've only read Teatro Grottesco and I'm now going through a recuperation period before I can pick another one of his books :-) Thanks for the mini-review of his work!

This. Also, I'm always surprised that people compare him with Lovecraft (and he's superior in every way) and never to Kafka.

I can't believe no one said David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas, Ghostwritten etc). Also I think Mark Z Danielewski's House of Leaves will be mentioned as a notable achievement.

I think maybe to some extent everyone loses what they thought was home. We call that adulthood.

Very-very true. I've had this sense for a while now, and I thought that something was wrong with my life, when what was really happening was that I was just growing up... thanks for putting it into words.

Where to begin with Tom Waits? by RawTunain Music

[–]scarredwaits 0 points1 point ago

Agreed, Rain Dogs seems to me like the "sweet spot" between the early Tom Waits and his more recent stuff. He's one of the few musicians that seem to have become edgier and more experimental as time passed (it helps that his voice has "deteriorated" to great effect) and in my book, that's definitely a good thing. Out of his more recent stuff, I really like Blood Money (almost every single track on that album is great). Alice and Real Gone are also fantastic albums, I really can't decide what order you should listen them to.

Superb corridor to rent, London, UK by ffffruitin WTF

This is a ripoff even for London. I pay less than that, for a room which is as big as this "flat", in a house that I share with 2 friends, in a supposedly more expensive area. Crazy!

Surrounded by the snowy mountains of Bulgaria, there is a huge, crazy UFO-shaped building, made of concrete. In its glory days, it used to be covered with 30 metric tons of copper. [pictures&great story] by sztomiin offbeat

First pic... wow! I'd really like a high-res version of that as my wallpaper, the light shining through the dome and the figure with the green light in the middle makes it look really scifi!

What is, in your opinion, the most powerful music you have ever listened to? by [deleted]in Music

[–]scarredwaits 0 points1 point ago

The "Anatomy of Addiction" album by the band "God". It's a freaky mix of experimental jazz, industrial and heavy metal music, and there is nothing like it, it's pretty unique.
