Technically, Mint uses MATE, a fork of Gnome 2. And yes, it can be the default.

I'd recommend the Dell Inspiron mini10. I got my 1012 (GSM-compatible) refurbished for $180. I run Crunchbang and Moblin on it; very snappy. I used to run Ubuntu, but I found that Gnome was a little slow. Great battery life as well - you can expect ~6 hours with wireless enabled.

Joli OS 1.2 Review: Is it the Best OS Available for Netbooks? by kiterunnerin linux

I tested it out a few months ago on my Dell mini 1012. It was cute for a while, but it tended to lag, even though I primarily only used Chrome and the terminal to ssh. I've since switched to Lubuntu. The LXDE environment uses about 180 MB memory when idling, which is great for a netbook. Not as pretty, but much more functional.

Check out The Recyclery. Not sure what their prices for bikes are like, but I got a good quality unicycle for $10, which I thought was pretty fantastic.

Shit, you're right. Good catch.

That being said, there's no reason for [; \tau;] to completely replace [;\pi;]. The sensationalized "Pi is wrong!" titles you see every now and then are rather annoying.

Even before calculus, tau complicates things: Euler's identity:

[; e^{ \pi i} + 1 = 0 ;]

becomes

[; e^{ \frac{ \tau i }{2}} + 1 = 0 ;].

Edit: As pointed out below, I'm an idiot.

If you don't mind a little bit of a drive (maybe 15-20 mins) check out Batavia. It's a cozy little town, and relatively affordable.

The Metra is pretty far from the 59/88 intersection. I used to be in the area, before I got my license. Unfortunately, there really is no public transportation within walking/biking distance.

EDIT: I stand corrected below.

Freshman at Northwestern. Majoring in physics and compsci, minoring in math. Taking analysis. Might stretch to a math major, if time permits.

Best way to take math notes on laptop? by gameslothin math

[–]s1i0dis 1 point2 points ago

Depends on what classes you're talking about. I'm a CS/Physics/Math major. I use vim/LaTeX to take notes in my basic engineering and wave physics classes. When it comes to advanced E&M or Analysis, there's no way I could keep up with the proofs, though, and I'm damn fast at LaTeX. I suggest plain old pencil and paper for applications like that. If you really want to use your computer, I suggest vim/LaTeX. I experimented with Word 2007, OneNote, and OpenOffice, and I still think vim/LaTeX is the best and fastest.
