AskgIT: Best way to use git for syncing personal files across computers? by antidensein git

Duplicity is an rsync-based one that could be worth adding. However its primary purpose is storing encrypted copies remotely so you don't need to be as concerned about the integrity of your remote server.

If you were put in charge of trimming Earth's human population down to 3 billion or so, what would your criteria be for who stays and who goes? by Clayburnin AskReddit

[–]rz2000 0 points1 point ago

Just get rid of the people who think the world wouldn't be a drastically less interesting place to live with fewer people. Hopefully it would reverse the policy long before everyone had to get boring, less specialized jobs and live in a world with drastically curtailed quality of life because the economy would be destroyed, even on a per capita basis.

What did school teach you that was blatantly false once you researched it on the Internet? by peetssin AskReddit

Yes. Without acknowledging how big the mistakes were in the original comic, it still had pretensions of being an authority.

What did school teach you that was blatantly false once you researched it on the Internet? by peetssin AskReddit

[–]rz2000 0 points1 point ago

I think people fail to recognize just how interesting this is though.

I expect that most adults who learned this when they were in school did it as part of an experiment. How did they come up with the results that the lesson plan said they were supposed to get?

It says a lot about how susceptible we are to falling for subtle clues, and how we subtly try not to look like we aren't incompetent without even knowing that we're doing it.

Perl Job Growth Sinking by uYKUUHNxcQin perl

[–]rz2000 4 points5 points ago

This graph, found here, showing the percentage of jobs with each of the major scripting languages is probably easier for people to read who are not used to reading graphs of growth rates.

It suggests that there are even more jobs postings looking for Perl expertise than there are openings for PHP, but the growth rate does look the most troubling. It might be interesting to compare the average salaries of the jobs for the four languages.

Anyway, it is also possible that more people are learning Perl with recent changes, and that they are therefore simply filling a shortage, rather than that there are fewer jobs. It's a bit of conjecture without more data.

Perl Job Growth Sinking by uYKUUHNxcQin perl

[–]rz2000 4 points5 points ago

It only shows percentage growth since Jan '05.

If there were 1,000 Ruby jobs in 2005-01, then there were 25,000 in 2012-01. It's possible there could have been 10,000 Python jobs then, corresponding to 65,000 now.

If you want a polite way of saying "no, I won't lower my prices for you" ... by mrtomservoin Design

[–]rz2000 1 point2 points ago

"We believe our price to quality ratio is very competitive" — sounds like bs, but that is exactly what you mean. You probably think they could pay someone less, but the work would be shoddy. You may also imagine a large team putting in more hours, but you don't think it would be worth the extra money for them.

You think the quality of your work is commensurate with the price you quoted. If they don't think it is, then neither one of you will be happy. You might as well tell them this if you're confident that the work is worth it.

Everyone's shopping based on price, the differences are whether it is in the neighborhood of $10 or $1 billion. When you say that they are not shopping based on price you mean that they shouldn't care as long as it is in a certain neighborhood. Someone who thinks they are not shopping based on price is unsophisticated. You don't actually want a client who doesn't know how to do business.

Is There Big Money in Big Data? - Technology Review by postliteratein MachineLearning

I think my apprehension comes from misinterpreting what is meant by throwing away or discarding data. While there is a danger in discovering nonexistent patterns from noise, its also possible to summarize too early or for someone without a plan to discard arbitrarily.

Mark Zuckerberg's $10 Billion Bet on the Sanctity of Marriage. by TerriChrisin MensRights

[–]rz2000 0 points1 point ago

I don't know where you get that. Social indicators of populations in highly religious areas show a greater incidence of divorce, which may very well be linked to their children first having sex at an earlier age, and their lower educational levels with respect to birth control.

It stands to reason that marriages resulting from accidental pregnancies at a very young age are less likely survive, though I am not aware if this specific differentiator is tracked like the high failure rate of marriages in these communities.

Learn more about it here.

Jon Stewart has occasionally stated that he is primarily an entertainer. I really wish he would never do this though. He does clearly aspire to a form of journalistic ethics, and he has built up trust from his audience, that he abuses when he does not acknowledge his rare errors.

The entire piece was baffling to me until he used the example of financial charting. I think what he was getting at was the tendency to amplify a lot of noise if you don't place any emphasis on intuition. Ideally analysts try to identify underlying mechanisms, and use subsequent analysis to confirm or contradict those intuitions.

Analyzing big data can help you identify mechanisms, and analyzing big data can help you learn the current conditions to plug into models. Maybe it is a bit of a strawman argument for him to suggest machine learning and big data are all about fixating on cute tricks. Furthermore collecting and storing data is pretty cheap. Stupid analysis is going to produce worthless results, but that is a property of the analysis being performed, not intrinsic to capturing large amounts of data.

This is the world's first open source HTML5 SIP client. by Clex-in programming

[–]rz2000 14 points15 points ago

Google Voice is effectively an exchange or switchboard. Google Talk is the expansion of Google Chat to allow voice communication and runs using XMPP as the protocol.

Note that Google Voice and Google Talk serve different functions. You can talk to any other Google Talk subscriber. To talk to someone on the conventional phone network (also know as PSTN for public switched telephone network) you need Google Voice to provide you with a PSTN telephone number.

Calls that are placed to your Google Voice telephone number are not answered within Google Voice. Instead Google Voice records a voicemail message for you, or it forwards the call to your Google Talk account, or it forwards the call to a conventional PSTN telephone number.

Because a SIP phone also has a PSTN presence, you can choose a SIP phone as the number that Google Voice forwards to. In other words when there is an incoming call to Google Voice, it could "ring" not only your browser running Google Talk within a session of Gmail, but also your SIP phone.

It took we a while to figure out how Google Voice/Chat/Talk work in practice, since I couldn't find it clearly spelled out anywhere. I'd be happy if anyone has corrections. I know that in the past you used to be able to configure your SIP phone to access Google Voice directly without also needing to establish a separate SIP number provider, but I believe this is no longer accessible to users through their own SIP clients.

Obama threatens veto after House nixes LGBT protections from Violence Against Women Act by radqueerfemmein obama

[–]rz2000 4 points5 points ago

That is more true for legislators, but he does have the bully pulpit. He can define the narrative that there is no act otherwise, and establish that they aren't allowing the Violence Against Women Act because of an interest in restricting protections.

Argumentum ad temperantiam remains the most effective way to manipulate the moderate middle. (The idea whereby if you behave unreasonable, people not paying attention will assume that your opponents are also unreasonable, and there must be some reason you've become unhinged) The president should use his veto to establish some ground rules, and let them argue their point on more honest terms if they feel they can justify them.
