Does Cardio Really Kill Gains?? by sassycattyin Fitness

[–]royal_oui 1 point2 points ago

this. if you are a beginner then it probably wont interfere too much with recovery, but if you are serious about lifting then you will be wanting to do as little as possible between lifting sessions.

all depends on your goals, how quickly your body recovers and where you are in your journey. everyone is different.

What are r/chemicalengineering's opinions on getting a PhD? by poundpoundpoundin ChemicalEngineering

[–]royal_oui 5 points6 points ago

Oil industry background here - no one has PhDs

Process design usually entails sizing relief valves, control valves, line sizing, pump specification etc. It does not entail dreaming up a new revolutionary way to process feedstock A into product B. It is usually done by design firms for the client - expect to do the same types of calculations 100 times over. You dont need a PhD to do this - you need a very disciplined aproach to undertaking and documenting calculations.

Process optimisation is rarely done in design stage. Usually the big decisions which effect efficiency are decided prior to detailed design. In every project i have been involved in, the concept has been taken from pre existing plants as the schedule is a far greater concern than optimising energy use etc.

If your interested in optimising a plant then perhaps working for the company who owns the plant is your best bet. Expect to spend a lot of time staring at trends, troubleshooting broken down equipment, finding ways to keep production going despite failed valves, justifying continued operation despite a failed trip transmitter or something similar

dont fall in to the trap of romanticizing design as lots of boffins sitting around brainstorming ways to reduce energy demand by 1MW - in reality it is cranking the handle on hundreds of calculations while trying to meet cost and schedule of the project to keep the client happy.

I've seen it work but when I try it it doesn't work for me. Things like this are more philosophical than strict rules in my opinion. If you like it and wear it confidently then it'll probably work, If not then it won't.

Also, do you get sick of the smell of the food?

(not an American bashing post) This is mostly true for American television (there are some exceptions, Rosanne for example) but take a look at English television and cinema where it's the opposite almost to a rule.

I have never used marijuana. As a result, all I know is based on the seemingly constant praise and justification it receives on the internet. Reddit, what are your worst experiences with the drug and why is it illegal? by MagikalGiantin AskReddit

[–]royal_oui 2 points3 points ago

agreed. alcohol does much more damage to society, both through its wide acceptance in society and the nature of its intoxication.

i dont think it should be illegal but i think its important that people understand the damage it can do.

i had a best friend get drug induced psychosis from it. he went completely batshit crazy for a night and completely dropped out of our group of friends. we found out through other friends that he blamed us for a bunch of stuff which didnt even happen that night. 15 years later and he still avoids us.

you can claim weed is relatively harmless but for a few people in society it is very harmful. the older i get the less i think it is worth taking a risk with.

i dont think it should be illegal but i think its important that people understand what it can do in some (albeit rare) cases.

There, you said it yourself ... this is why MFA doesn't tend to like them.

i dont like them on chinos or casual trousers but i think they look great on suits. i suspect most MFAs dont like them because they are generally more of a street wear crowd.

is your disdain for pleats a fashion / age related issue or do you have serious fit reasons for disliking them.

im a young(ish) guy who wears both pleats and flat front pants. pleated pants generally look better for longer if you are sitting down and standing up a lot (i.e. the office) whereas flat front pants keep a better shape if you are standing all night.

flat front pants are more 'young' and modern looking and evoke something of a modern european look (to my eye).

pleats can make you look old and wide around the waist but there is something of an old school elegance to them. like double breasted jackets - if they fit well and you wear them with confidence they look great

this guy has a great blog post on the merits of pleats even for bigger guys.

this is an example of some nice forward pleats.

I think your dismissal of pleats was too hasty and perhaps will misguide a lot of younger gents away from them when they can be incredibly stylish when done correctly.

just my 2c anyway

by the way, if you are considering pleats, you need to consider carefully what looks better for you, single or double, reverse or forward. if you are unsure, go double forward - i tend to trust the british to know what they are doing when it comes to menswear

It's not disinformation, it's a commonly documented issue with use of extract. Your experience doesn't negate this and there are a myriad of factors which could explain your experience (fore mentioned healthy yeast starter for example).

Single Tier Brewing Concept, Does This Seem About Right? by deeboein Homebrewing

[–]royal_oui 4 points5 points ago

a few points

  1. its always easier to control a HLT with an electric element. You only need a ~2000W heating element for pretty quit response and you can use a normal temp controller to control temp within 1C, its a lot harder with gas (overshooting the temperature and waiting around for it to cool).

  2. if your using a march pump consider a HERMS instead of a direct heater for the mash tun. Same advantages as point 1.

  3. false bottoms for kettles are a bit unecesary however if you do use one get a kettle screen - it has a finer mesh size than the standard false bottom.

The suit as a costume of classiness by vgryin DepthHub

[–]royal_oui 5 points6 points ago

Interestingly Jobs was often pictured wearing suits early in his career... The casual dress came with the success of apple and it's branding as a creative machine moreso than a business machine... He was very careful regarding what he wore, wether it was a suit or a turtleneck. This is very different to the converse tshirt set
