Verizon refuses to activate on lost man's cell phone for police search unless they agreed to pay his $20 overdue bill. by muddycolorin technology

The one thing that I liked from slashdot was that posts are completely immutable.

Once you have made a post on the internet, it is beyond your control to remove it. Adding a delete button just gives you a false expectation that it will be gone.

This really just belongs as part of the download manager or browser. Unless the file downloaded correctly, it shouldn't be flagged as completed. This should be the same for any file format.

What happens when you die? (To your online identity, that is. We don't have to get TOO existential here.) by wordsmithiein technology

[–]rockNme2349 0 points1 point ago

If you committed an awesome piece of code to the Linux kernel on GitHub, how will you transfer ownership to your next of kin?

OK, IANAL, but this is simply a transfer of copyright. I haven't read the laws, but I'll bet you 1000 internet dollars that there's something in there about what happens when you die.

This whole article seems pretty arbitrary.

In my case, assuming I live to 80 and Google doesn’t fold, this will mean that my children get access to more than 50 years of email — hundreds of thousands of email containing passwords, private communications, and a whole array of sensitive documents.

If you don't want it around DELETE IT.

Password protecting or encrypting your computer would seem wise in this case — but what if there are important files on your hard drive, such as bank details or your memoirs, that must be passed to your next of kin?

I can think of no possible way this could happen.

Linux From Scratch by blablbalbin linux

They both have phenomenal documentation considering the fact that they're both generally considered hobbyist distros. I would say that they are not only equally good, but they often compliment each other.

I personally run Gentoo. When I first started using it I had no experience, but the handbook was able to flawlessly lead me through the install process and explain the options to me.

However, while maintaining my system and searching for answers, about half of my searches lead me to the arch wiki, which will sometimes have information not present in gentoo's docs, and vice versa.

Started using Ubuntu for the first time. What are some basic things I should NOT do? by zomgdavidbowiein linux

[–]rockNme2349 3 points4 points ago

This is an important thing to remember. When using Windows, the generally accepted way to install new programs is to google the program and download the exe from their website.

When using most GNU/Linux distributions, almost everything you need will be included in the package manager, so make sure you're checking there first. This gives you the huge advantage of managing updates and dependencies in a central location.

It's easy to use, but some people don't even know it's there.

Why is Google taking so long to properly launch Google Wallet? by niggwhut89in Android

Humans vs. Robots: Who Should Dominate Space Exploration? by yoda17in space

[–]rockNme2349 1 point2 points ago

More than 2,000 papers have been published over the last four decades using data collected during the manned Apollo missions, and the rate of new papers is still rising. In comparison, the Soviet robotic Luna explorers and NASA’s Mars Exploration rover program — Mars Pathfinder, Spirit, and Opportunity — have each generated around 400 publications.

This looks legit.

I can understand the argument that it's more exciting to send humans to these places, but trying to argue that more research can be done by human exploration is just dense.

Open-Source, Arduino-powered Bluetooth Android Video Game Controller on Kickstarter! 8 Days Left to Meet Goal! by rabidmonkey1in Android

[–]rockNme2349 1 point2 points ago

I feel that between Gametel and iControlPad there already exists the necessary controllers for cell phone gaming. Gametel is nice if you want a cheaper option, and the iControlPad has analog sticks if you want more control options and are willing to pay for them.

A controller made explicitly for cell phones that doesn't mount just seems like a joke. If I wanted to play with my phone on my lap I'd use a wiimote or sixaxis.

Open-source textbook company sued by three major publishers. by stealsharkin technology

[–]rockNme2349 1 point2 points ago

This is exactly the complaint the publishers are pushing. They're claiming that although they do not have copyright of the facts in their textbooks, this open-source company is doing a blatant copy of their expression of these facts by copying their layout and organization. It seems to me that they at least have a case.

Mosh (Mobile Shell): A modern replacement for SSH? by Jamzain linux

[–]rockNme2349 9 points10 points ago

It is sort of a gray area, yes you need SSH to start Mosh, but it doesn't run over SSH after the connection is initialized. If they label it as an "add-on", or "enhancement" people will assume it is running over SSH like any other program.

I don't know if there is a good word to succinctly describe the relationship between Mosh and SSH.

Wii games and Dolphin by jmghollywoodin emulation

IIRC you don't need to physically mod the wii, you just need one of the games that has an exploit that allows arbitrary code execution, such as Twilight Princess. Then you can dump to the SD card.

Dolphin+Wiimote question by Einzbernin emulation

[–]rockNme2349 1 point2 points ago

It should be fine. I haven't played Skyward Sword, but I was able to play TP with the Wiimote+Nunchuck on dolphin just fine. The one missing feature was when firing bow/arrow or slingshot instead of being able to point at the screen you have to use the nunchuck control stick.

TBH though it's way more fun to just grab the mouse at those points and fire away with super-accuracy.

Dolphin+Wiimote question by Einzbernin emulation

[–]rockNme2349 1 point2 points ago

You can use the wiimote for most functions without the sensor bar. This means the accelerometers will function, but it won't have any bearing on the screen, so you can't use it as a "cursor."

If you want to use the entire functionality you have two options. The first option is to plug the sensor bar into your wii and leave the wii running. The sensor bar is just an array of IR LEDs. The actual sensor is in the wiimote.

There are also more creative options to create the IR light. There are videos online showing how to run IR LEDs next to your monitor, and I have even heard of people lighting candles as sources of IR and it actually works just fine.

I'm pretty sure this is simply a fundamental flaw in the logical structure of reddit. Since everything must go in one category there is this constant battle between aggregation and separation.

Unless reddit were to change over to a "tag" metaphor where posts can have multiple tags, such as linux+gaming, I think this sort of problem doesn't have a good solution.
