Yeah, about 10 years ago I joined a forum and I'll refrain from mentioning which one. My now fiancee was also a member of this forum. Over the years we both became administrators of the site, and us as well as about 100 others off the site had a meetup. We met, fell in love, hell... 45 days later we were living with each other.

While the relationship itself is nice, things I had posted on this forum over the years kept coming back to bite me again and again. I had written passing thoughts and details about previous relationships that plucked her insecurity strings pretty hard. I love spilling my guts to total strangers. Adore it. I love getting getting feedback and reactions to thoughts, feelings and beliefs that is really difficult to share publicly. But needless to say after a couple of big blowups I stayed up for 3 days straight and deleted 25,000 posts of mine off the site (i have long not been a mod/admin/whatever). 1 at a time.

It was always a rule that no one IRL knows my on-goings online. I don't have a facebook or a myspace, i have separate email accounts for business and pleasure. I don't use the same username on any one site making the ability to google for me impossible.

Hell even on reddit i delete my account and create a new one every month or two. And i have 2 reddit accounts.. one that i use normally (this one) and one where i talk about overly sexual stuff. I dunno, I value my online identity. I almost lost a job because I made a linux blog one time and I worked for a fortune 500 that was a huge MS partner. So yeah, family, friends, even my soon to be wife.. can stay the hell away from what I do online. IMO it's my private space and my private time.

Help r/startrek! my girlfriend doesn't anything about Star Trek!

rm-rf_linux 1 point2 points 6 hours ago[-]

I don't know what your girl is like, but mine would've dislike the TOS stuff at any stage. If i tried introducing her to star trek with the TOS stuff, I don't think she'd be giving TNG, DS9 or anything else a chance.

While Season 1 on TNG and parts of S2 are pretty campy and dated, I find TNG for the most part has held up pretty well.

I think that initial jolt of seeing latest and greatest Star Trek made it seem like "ok, it's really not that dorky and not so bad". People tend to stay away from star trek because it carries such a huge connotation. You hear about people dressing up like Klingons like they're the Furries of a former era. Star Trek generally gets associated with sex-less virgin nerds who have too much free time on their hands, who walk around doing the Vulcan hand signal to people and learning fake alien languages. The new movie interjects some "cool" into it. Don't get me wrong, I have some huge criticisms personally about the movie, but I find it to be a great introduction. Though it's weird starting off with the alternate universe and I would explain that alternate universe thing to her.

You MIGHT, want to watch some highlight episodes of the original series. The Menagerie, Mirror mirror, trouble with tribbles, Space Seed, etc..just to explain some instances where TOS stuff crosses over into TNG or DS9, at some point. Maybe during S2-3 of TNG or something just kinda sprinkle one here and one there.

Just an idea.. and maybe i'm being overly stereotypical in my vision of girls... but i can tell you what worked on my girl.

My girl liked the latest Star Trek movie with Nero and such and all the beautiful 20 somethings. that's how i got her started.

Then we moved on to TNG, the selling point for TNG is how Worf is constantly the comedic releif, and watching Data's character being developed. She gushes over Data these days. So much in fact that she doesn't call "TNG" by it's name. She'll come up to me and go "you wanna watch a Data tonight?"

From there we tried watching TOS. She hated it. Absolutely hated it. And I can't say I blame her, if you didn't watch this as a child it is unbearable IMO. There's little "science" in it, one episode has no bearing on any following episodes, things happen that are just incredibly improbable (Greek gods, nazis, gangsters of the 20s, Rome on another planet, an exact duplicate of planet earth in Miri, Spock mind melding with machines, Kirk outsmarting sentient machines). Not to mention the awful fight scenes like in Arena. We watched half of season 1, all of season 2, and 3 episodes of season 3 before she couldn't take it anymore.

The original movies didn't fare too much better with her. She kinda like Kahn, and kinda liked IV. IV bothered her by the fact that they treated time travel so flippantly and how the made it about whales. They take 2 whales back to the future.. that's not enough genetic material to repopulate a species so she didn't really get the point.

Needless to say, anything "original series" be it the show, the animated series or the movies simply don't do it for her.

She has taken a quick liking to DS9, and while she hated the Ferengi in TNG, she absolutely loves Quark's character and the constant struggles he and Odo have with each other. She's also beginning to gush over Odo as she did once over Data.

I find she likes characters she can feel something for and connect to and for characters that make her laugh. And she likes it to be a bit more modern looking and believable.

So far we've watched movies 1-5, Season 2 and parts of S1 and S3 of TOS, 3 TAS episodes, 6 seasons of TNG, and half a season of DS9. We plan to watch the rest of TNG, DS9 and then get into the TNG movies, Voyager and Enterprise.

Frankly, I'm getting really tired of a crowd that generally hates pop music but shits themselves whenever some little indie/hipster artist or internet artist does some artsy fartsy cover of a pop song. Ooooh... i get it, you're sooo ironic. You're not pop, you're not major label.. but look how cool you are covering major label pop songs.

Meh, I'm not too paranoid. The Keepass file is encrypted itself and like i stated the version i keep on my dropbox account is plaintext version with a small truecrypt volume. I highly doubt, even if the account was compromised, i'd have anything to worry about.

At the same, I wouldn't necessarily judge them harshly for being sell-outs

The people that do, I wonder if they judge Michaelangelo for doing so much religious work. Or Leondardo Da Vinci for that matter.

I mean, at the end of the day, a brotha has to eat. Point blank. And why not eat by doing something you love? Sure you have to compromise a bit, but what are these artists going to do? Go program computers? Go and be the world's best architects? No. They know music. I know technology. Breaking away from what you know as an adult and starting all over is fucking hard. I don't blame them one bit.

Why not then criticize the fans? Use social pressure to push them into not just gulping down what MTV gives them.

For a number of reasons. First off I have many "guilty pleasures". I put it in quotes because I don't feel the slightest amount of guilt for liking them, though I know others would shame me. This doesn't keep me from listening to some of the greats in jazz or rock or orchestrated music. It doesn't keep me away from awesome noise or avante garde projects, it doesn't keep me away from the harder-to-consume metal and underground hip hop that I tend to enjoy. So i think raggging people about their personal tastes is kind of a low blow and would be hypocritical of me. What I will criticize though is a person's narrow horizons. I will criticize people who won't give other stuff a chance if someone shows them something.

Secondly, there are billions of people (as in the grand majority) that prefer pop-garbage over all else. The idea that all of the undergroup, elitist, in-the-know peeps across the globes, even in combined forces, are somehow going to shame people away from something they like.. is dellusional and a waste of time and effort.

Thirdly, I frankly don't care what other people are listening to that much.

Fourth, people will always sell out. The masses will always be less refined than the niche groups and smaller subcultures and underground movements. This is a reality. And there's always going to be people who are going to do what they need to get their money. I don't see the crime in it. I don't think it makes for good high brow art, sometimes it makes poor mindless entertainment. But it's not hurting anyone and it's idealistic to think it'll ever go away.

The Win version offers this as well, and the keybinding is a variable you can change in both windows and linux. In Linux the variable is located at

  • Extras --> Settings --> Advanced --> Global Auto-type Shortcut

In Windows it is :

  • Tools --> Options ---> Advanced --> Auto-type button at the bottom right.

The default on both is Ctrl + Alt + A but you can make it Ctrl-V or whatever.

The menu options differ so drastically is because the KeePassX isn't developed by the same people who do KeePass for windows. I've found the linux version to actually be quite buggy. Adding Subgroups for instance can break the XML structure when saving from KeePassX in Linux and you'll need KeePass in windows to recover it. It's quite a pain.

In a way I almost understand though. I've heard stories of DefJux and Rhymesayer's label rappers who have been around for ages and get tons of respect, not even having enough money to transport themselves to shows. I heard that about some guys at the Rock the Bells tour in NYC and it just blew my mind. I can't recall now as it's been years since then but i remembering being floored by that thought. It's not like Rock theBells has "nobodies" come and have spots on the stage.

I figure it's got to be hard, especially in the digital era, to be an underground MC and still make money. I think Black Eyed Peas gave it a nice try, never had an ounce of success when their integrity was intact and finally just decided to get their money. They got a chick to lead them and then started pumping out pop/rap-n-b club songs.

I sit and think sometimes who i'd rather be, rich and ridiculed by music snobs, or strugglign with my integrity. And then i look at my everyday life, i look at how I tuck tail and have to remind myself to keep my protests quiet to get by in a corporate atmosphere just to put food on my table... and I know for a fact, I'd take that money any given day of the week and if I had to appeal to the retards that make up the American masses to do it, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

It blows my mind you and so many others are judgmental pricks. You decide the types of relationships you enjoy getting into without the fear of criticize, online or in real life. But somehow other's are supposed to conform to what you and mainstream society wants?

Maybe we should tell all the stay at home dads that. And all the fags and dykes too.

Where is the line in the sand? Either people have the freedom and liberty, and should have their decisions about their lifestyles treated with respect ... or we don't. This "well, monogamy is in, gays are in, lesbians are in, poly stuff, swinging and cuckoldy are out" is just fucking bullshit. You don't get to decide for other people and being critical of it is just dick.

The idea that someone, somehow might decide to live differently that you?

Oh the fucking audacity of people!

Maybe we should all check in with you about what's ok and what's not in regardless to our relationships. Wouldn't want to piss you off by merely existing or anything.

rm-rf_linux 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

Every person and every couple decides for themselves. You don't want other people dictating the rules and boundaries of your relationship, so who the fuck are you to attempt to apply your moralitiy and boundaries onto others?

If people like strict and traditional monogamy, good for them. Polyamory, fine. Swinging, fine. Cuckolding and Hotwifing, fine. Weekend gangbangs, fine. I don't see any reason to rag on someone else for their way of life personally. It says more about the person doing the criticizing than the person they are actively being critical of.

Pat Metheny's rant on Kenny G

rm-rf_linux 2 points3 points 1 day ago[-]

That would pretty much be applicable to most (not all) mainstream entertainment and art choices.

Whenever anything attempts to cast the widest net possible to amass the largest fanbase possible, and they generally succeed, it is because they appealed to the lowest common denominator of society.

This is why people like Johnny-come-lately scenic paintings and couldn't even tell you who Van Gogh is. This is why American Idol does so well, or Linkin Park, or Britney Spears, or Lil John. This is why Star Trek needs to be turned into a stupid action movie with lasers filled with beautiful 20 somethings. It's why comic books made into movies need to be watered down.

Whenever anything tries to break out of its niche, usually the soul of the artform or performer or artist tends to bleed out with its climb to success. Only on rare occasion do you see something climb to mainstream success and still hold on to it's artistic credibility and integrity. This is true for jazz, hip hop, metal, dance music, all of it.

It's neat but it requires KeePass Password Safe 2 which is .Net dependent and it is not backwards compatible with KeePass 1.7, which is what KeePass portable and KeepassX are based on.

Using KeePass 2.x loses the cross platform and portability that makes KeePass 1.x so wonderful. I use a multitude of Linux and Windows boxes, I need full access to my password file while I'm on the go, at work, and at home. 2.x ruins that.

XSS demo for stealing passwords from the Firefox password manager

this is how you do passwords.

  1. Get a USB Key
  2. Get a Dropbox account or something similar.
  3. Get the KeePass Passwords manager. (Keepass for win, keepassx for Linux, and KeePass Portable)
  4. Start changing all your passwords using KeePass's password generator, save and make a note of all your passwords.. That's right. All of them. Every single one of my passwords are completely unique, 12+ characters, alpha numeric, upper and lowercase, with symbols. I only know 3 passwords. I know my NIS account at work, I know my work PC's password, and I know the password to my truecrypt volumes. That's it. Oh, and the password to my keepass file.

  5. Save your password file to your USB key. Save a copy of it to your Dropbox account before closing the application. If you get worried keepass might fuck up the xml structure of the file and not reopen properly, export a plaintext backup of the password file and put it in a small truecrypt volume on your dropbox account. Every time you save the file, do these 2 saves, the original place and the backup.

  6. Both keepassx in linux and keepass have the ability to setup a keybinding. When entered this keybinding looks at the Title in the window manager. So if you're at reddit.com's home page and "Reddit" is a word in the titlebar, and "Reddit" is the title of your password entry, when you hit Ctrl + Alt +A while your cursor is in the username box, Keepass will enter your username, tab over to the password box and enter your password and even hit enter to log you in automatically.

  7. Use NoScript with a nice little whitelist of the sites you trust, and set firefox to clear ALL information at every close.

This way your browser doesn't store passwords to steal. Key loggers can't grab them either. All your passwords are completely unique, they are resistant to dictionary attacks, and frankly, it makes logging into sites a lot faster than manually typing it out.
