What jobs are there for people with history degrees outside the field of education? by imonlyredditing41dayin history

[–]rkiga 0 points1 point ago

Like anything else, you'll hear good and bad stories about any program you research. The big one in Chile is EOD I think, which pays next to nothing but provides housing and health insurance IIRC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Opens_Doors

I didn't take one myself, so I can't comment on price or recommendations, but check out eslcafe.com where there are tons of people recommending TEFL/TESOL/etc programs and has a forum for ALTs from Chile.

If you're from the US, UK, Canada, or Australia, move to another country and teach English for a year or two. In most cases the only requirements are that you have a B.A. (or equivalent) in any subject, know how to smile, be a native speaker of English, and have a basic understanding of the company that you're applying to.

I'm currently in Japan teaching high school English. I have no formal training or experience in education or teaching and an absolute beginner's level of Japanese ability. There are programs like this for many many countries in the world, you just have to pick where you want to go.

For Japan, I'd suggest checking out the JET Programme and Interac only. Let me know if you have any questions about ALTs in general, or specific to JET vs Interac.

Just be aware that most companies I know of have VERY long application processes. You will typically apply sometime around Sep-Dec, then go through screenings and interviews, etc. and find out if you have a job around Jan-Feb for an April start (Interac and a few JET), or May-July for an August start (majority of JET).

Reddit, are SIL Open Font License (OFL) Fonts ok to use on a commercial product? by SILNTBOBin graphic_design

[–]rkiga 0 points1 point ago

OFL isn't really made for that, so I'm not sure. AFAIK, the "derivative works" part of the share alike clause in this case refers to font derivatives, not documents (products?) the fonts are used/embedded in.

from the FAQ: "1.13 Referencing or embedding an OFL font in any document does not change the license of the document itself. The requirement for fonts to remain under the OFL does not apply to any document created using the fonts and their derivatives. Similarly, creating any kind of graphic using a font under OFL does not make the resulting artwork subject to the OFL."

Try asking in /r/libredesign for a better answer.

Sure, but I don't know what else you want to know. I usually just copy+paste the previous day's title to edit and edit the rest of the thread in notepad++. On days like up/down match days where there are tons of different matchups, I get player names and matchup orders from http://www.gomtv.net/schedule/index.gom or m.gomtv.net and just use ctrl+r in notepad++ to "replace all" names, for example "oGs_SuperNova" with "(T) oGs_SuperNova". I look on my reddit "submitted" profile to copy+paste when formatting changes from for example "Code S group stages" to "semi finals", etc.

Here's a partial Time Zone cheat sheet and partial Korean name list: http://pastebin.com/j8uZRiWs

And an example GSL thread for formatting: http://pastebin.com/n9xnAqXW

The only real advice I have is to try to figure out when to post the thread. Too early and the thread score will have started to decay and people who come to /r/starcraft late won't even see the thread. Too late and you won't have enough upvotes for the thread to be visible either.

Posting around 2-3 hours early seems to be my best guess on when you should post the thread for an average day. If you know it's going to be a long GSL day, then maybe 2 hours early. If it's a shorter day, or something like a Grand Finals, you'll want to post it 3-6 hours early as a reminder. But really, anyone looking for the GSL thread will probably ctrl+f for it.

Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) helps a bit with previewing, and it gives you a "source" button at the bottom of each thread/comment so you can copy formatting exactly without having to ask for the text to be pasted to pastebin, etc.

Just copy my old threads if you want, and obviously change any formatting you want to.

I used to have to go to gomtv.com and dig through google translated korean text to find info like maps and calendar stuff, but now most of what you need to know will be on gomtv.net or teamliquid. I found posting the maps for each match to be too much of a hassle for its worth except for semi/finals. If you get bored or want to know what Koreans are saying/thinking at the moment, you can check out playxp's main sc2 site, betting site, and which race is OP site

Good luck!

It's been a crazy holidays but I'm back home. Thanks for keeping the threads going everyone.

Good news (and bad news) is that I got a job offer that I'm going to take and will be moving soon too. But that means I won't be able to do GSL threads anymore. Hopefully another GSL addict will want to take over the threads more or less permanently.

Most of youtube pages are cached for X hours before updates since they normally won't change much in a relatively short period of time.

Also, the reddit up/down vote numbers are fake and inflated.

Prerequisites for JET by thatcoolunclein japan

After researching for hours I really couldn't figure out the selection process. It seems to be a mystery afaik besides the obvious things of just doing your research for the application process, and having a genuine interest in teaching and culture (JET wants you to be a sort of ambassador for Japanese culture to anyone you talk to back home as well as an ambassador for your home country for the people in your guest community). Teaching experience is definitely not a prerequisite as most ALTs are straight out of college. There are tons of blogs to read, vids on youtube about it all, and a bunch of ALT forums.

After two big Eikawas closed recently, now there are a lot of out of work English teachers trying to hold on to visas competing for your job (two were at my interview). Somebody quoted 25% chance to get accepted, but I doubt that's even close now. I heard numbers more along the lines of 15:1 of applicants to people who actually get placed. I have two cousins who applied and the one that got rejected graduated from Princeton, was on the basketball team, speaks Japanese, etc, so I don't really know how she got rejected (and her sister hired) unless she bombed her interview (and this was 5 years ago when it was easier). As an aside, I don't know about JET, but Interac is 75+% male for some reason, so too bad you're thatcooluncle instead of thatcoolaunt.

My friend is working as an ALT right now in his second year. Along with the JET Programme, he recommends Interac (~2000 ALTs, or roughly half the size of the JET Programme), and Altia (very small company) and said the rest of the ALT companies he wouldn't recommend. There are also conversation schools (Eikaiwa), cram schools, etc. but those are harder to get into without a visa, and aren't very appealing to me (two big Eikaiwa chains have shut down in recent years, you work longer hours, work afternoons & nights, also on saturday/sunday or both, etc)

Most problems ALTs have are due to people not doing their research, thinking life in Japan is like anime, thinking that they're going to get placed in Shibuya instead of out in the country (where the majority of placements are), not preparing themselves for the differences in culture, or just bad luck getting paired with bad teachers.

I don't know much about Altia, but JET and Interac are very similar. The main differences are the application process, pay, vacation days, and placements.

It might not be an issue for you, but the big pro about Interac for me is the speed of the application process. I finished my online application in early Dec, got through that stage, did the phone interview/screening, then did the in-person interview/seminar in Los Angeles on Dec 17. I will know if I have a job (or not) by Jan 15, and then leave for Japan at the end of March.

JET you apply in ~September, interview in February, and leave for Japan in July (A group) or August (B group). I just learned that JET now sends some over in April too, but I think the majority are A or B.

Pay and vacation (from ithinkimlost.com forums):

JET: 20 Paid Vacation days (of your choice)

Interac: August off (60% of your salary), 15 set days off in December (%75 of your salary), plus 5 fully paid vacation days (of your choice).

I'm sure it is the same for JET, but Interac also gets every Japanese holiday off (ie. Emperor's Birthday, Vernal Equinox Day, Culture day, Respect-for-the-Age day, Autumnal Equinox Day, Sports Day, etc.)

Interac pay is ~¥224,375 to ¥243,600 after taxes per month (city position vs rural+driving position), which is ¥2,546,656 to ¥2,764,860 per year including the reduced pay in Aug/Dec. The official FAQ says JET pay is ¥3.36M after taxes per year (!).

JET has more high school placements, Interac has more elementary and jr high placements, but you can get placements at any age group for either company. Most placements for both companies are rural. Interac you typically visit 3-5 schools per week, JET more likely is 1-2 afaik. I've heard it's really hard to transfer to a different placement for JET for your second year, but for Interac it's much more common.

If a man was out in deep space, would there be enough light for him to see his hand in front of his face? by Surrender_monkey21in askscience

[–]rkiga 0 points1 point ago

I don't know how much that would help, but any benefit would surely be trumped by all the light pollution here on earth, even in the most remote of places. The atmosphere will also block some light itself, as would any clouds, water, fog, smog, smoke, dust, etc.

I know there are better ones, but I could only find one relevant first-hand quote about whether stars look different in space (from Barbara Morgan, astronaut on the Endeavour / ISS): "Stars shine steadily and don't twinkle because there is no atmosphere to distort the light."

Just this week until the 17th. All the days start at 18:00 KST except the finals which starts at 17:00 KST.

I'm also applying for a job in Japan, so might have to step down and be replaced permanently, but that doesn't mean you have to commit to that right now ;p
