One more thing for you to think about:

He sold Earth to the Combine in HL1, and arranged the events at the end of episode 2.

He's a bigger villain than anyone or anything in the entire series.

That quote, of all of Breen's, showed me just how out of touch he really is with all of humanity.

The answer to his question is hope.

We need more details. There are a ton of great science fiction works, and you've only got the one shot.

Your implication at the end there seems to be that no Christians think that having homosexual feelings is intrinsic, normal and non-sinful. Did you mean to say that?

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish groups in Israel would like to see gender separation in public, and some have stooped to harassing women to get their way. The second paragraph of the Wikipedia page on Orthodox Judaism kind of disagrees with that.

The exact forms of Judaism during the times of Moses or during the eras of the Mishnah and Talmud cannot be known today, but Orthodox Jews believe that contemporary Orthodox Judaism maintains the same basic philosophy and legal framework that existed throughout Jewish history, whereas the other denominations depart from it. Orthodox Judaism, as it exists today, is an outgrowth that claims to extend from the time of Moses, to the time of the Mishnah and Talmud, through the development of oral law and rabbinic literature, until the present time.

I'm sure you're right that they aren't the same thing, but it sounds like Wikipedia is saying 'close enough'.

I've made the assumption that the Jews in the Old Testament, specifically those mentioned in Number 31:14-18, were Orthodox followers of Judaism.

I've also made the assumption that this event actually happened. I haven't done the research, but I understand that some of the events in the Old Testament are historically debatable.

So my question was whether or not that kind of event is bad enough, and recent enough, to count as a history of violence.

No. They had a cat brain-sized neural network running, which is not the same thing as emulating a cat brain. The connections between the neurons are the really important part, and we neither have that information nor expect to have it in the near future.

I don't see how this post bashes religious people at all. It's a comparison between Jesus and a robot. Where are religious people even mentioned?

Apparently it requires a special alphabet written on paper. Just internal representations in computers doesn't seem to do the trick, if we assume the monks know what they're talking about.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to me either why it would be that way, but hey, that's the story.

Have you read 'The Things' by Peter Watts? It's a short story written from the perspective of the monster.
