I asked my iPhone to define 'woman' out of curiosity as I was writing a presentation on feminist theory. well, that sums things up, doesn't it? by sidtylerin TwoXChromosomes

[–]orsr 1 point2 points ago

Do you really think it is stereotyping? Personally I think the "degradatory" definitions are satire.

Experiments suggested that the widespread endorsement of stereotypes such as "poor but happy" or "rich but miserable" exist to balance out the gap between those of low and high socioeconomic status.

Yeah, let them have their cars, houses, islands, lovers, superior private healthcare and friends on higher places, I'm far happier with my rusty wooden stove and plenty of dried burdock leaves as toilet paper.

Modern science emerged only when it became acceptable to ask any question about anything – and that required erosion of traditional hierarchies" | Philip Ball on the Origins of Curiosity (xpost from r/HistoryofIdeas) by Qwill2in PhilosophyofScience

So curiosity was anathema to religion?

Yes, it was.

Every time when I read about history of science, I come across this pattern.

Weak adhesion and hydrogen bonding seem to be the forces for the climbing mechanism.

I would never thought that it sticks to the walls on an atomic level.

What I had in mind is that until the destruction of the Second temple, judaism had a "real", worldly center of worship. After the destruction, it had to go far more abstract than christianity, which had it's messiah's apostles, several relics etc.

I'm also not familiar with any jewish young earth creationism. I would guess that after the destruction of the Second temple, the jewish religion went a bit more abstract than christianity, so it has a better framework to withstand literal fundamentalist interpretations of its sacred texts.

The problem I see with taking it metaphorically is that anyone can argue for almost anything, even being provided with textual or cultural context. We can argue that in Exodus, YHWH hardened the heart of the pharaoh, because hi wanted to show people his true power, as well as the pharaoh hardened his heart himself, because he was stubborn. Both of these interpretations are possible.

That is where the Oral Law comes in.

That's suspiciously similar to Christians saying some of the OT is really meant to be taken metaphorically, not literally.
