Lingzhao's "Bright and Clear" (88 of 300) by BetterJoshin Koans

[–]newfflews 1 point2 points ago

I mean, could it ever be expressed 100% in words. So to say it is "like" something is never adequate. But there are some ways of putting it that do pretty well. I think that's why the daughter chastised and then repeated the remark.

"80 or 90 percent" is an old zen phrase used as a compliment, basically saying the statement is as true as it can be using only words.

More importantly, why not 100%?

Such a statement is 80 percent of the matter.

First pesto of the summer!! (pasta & pesto recipe in comments) by amyb4929in Cooking

Heh, four hours ago we were digging into our first basil pesto of the season as well. Pretty much the same recipe! The food processor got some juicing action before that too- fresh lemonade.

The engine is the framework upon which you build your game. It's a reusable, general code base that you customize and expand upon. Typically it has a lot of optimized code libraries for AI, graphics, sound, physics, scripting, game architecture, etc. With something like Unreal 4 you've got some serious high performance code to do these things, and I'm assuming some nice tools included to help with development.

Perhaps it's not cold in the winter where you live, but nothing grows here in January. Any fresh produce I consume in the winter is at the very least trucked in from down south.

Green tea, especially sencha. It tastes too "green", like maybe it comes from a plant? And you don't like glutamates?

Oh and Indian food. It's like, I don't know how to properly communicate what you're missing, mom and dad. I even cook it from scratch.

My ultimate goal in learning the piano is to play Bach. As a beginner, besides the basic fundamentals, what should I start focusing on now? by jjassonnin piano

[–]newfflews 0 points1 point ago

That's one way to do it. You have some other considerations though, like memorization and technical proficiency. It's difficult to play multiple voices if you're shaky on memory or technique, so there is benefit to learning the two hands separately. Fugues are actually really difficult technically and cognitively, since there are so few patterns and the fingerings are ridiculously complicated.

Learning Bach is a personal journey. It's hard to explain any other way. You can never play it perfectly, but you'll also find yourself expressing it differently each time. I can't explain it, but there's an intimacy to the music that is special.

I'm hoping most of those aren't incredibly hard to play

Alcohol. Let's discuss it. How does it effect you and your mental state? by wheniforgotin BipolarReddit

I quit drinking and never looked back. My mood is much more stable, I feel way more energetic, and I'm saving a good deal of money. I don't miss hangovers one bit. Green tea is my main vice these days, unless you count these damn Reese's Pieces.

IWTL how to like [hyper] dogs. by ohgod_whyin IWantToLearn

[–]newfflews 2 points3 points ago

If you really want to get to know a dog, you've got to get on the floor- on their level- and interact with them. Wrestle, cuddle, play games, get smelly, get covered in drool. It's really not that bad. Take a shower afterwards if you need to, but don't be afraid to get a little dirty. The thing about big dogs (and all dogs really) is that you need to have a physical relationship (har har) if you want to get them to love and respect you.

Little dogs are great, medium dogs are awesome and I think ideal for most people, but I love large breeds. Right now we have a 110 lb Bull Mastiff and a 170 lb Newfoundland. I get scratched up, banged around, drooled on, climbed on, tripped up, crowded. I try to return the favor.

I honestly don't know how I am going to hold up by TSTCin BipolarReddit

[–]newfflews 3 points4 points ago

You can handle it by improving your life. Exercise, eat well, quit drinking, quit smoking, meditate, take medication, go to counseling, keep a journal, devise a strict routine, take walks, get enough sleep. These are things that will not only make your life better all around, but they help you avoid episodes and make them easier to deal with.

Tell the people who love you, don't tell others. That's my policy, anyway. Best not to tell employers though unless you're required to by law.

It's not the end of the world. There are strengths and weaknesses that this condition imparts. We all have episodes or potential episodes of varying intensity, so I don't want to speak for everyone; but an episode does not guarantee you'll end up depressed for weeks or blowing your life savings. Be mindful, have family and friends be watchful for you (since they're often the first people to notice the warning signs), be proactive, and you'll very likely be all right. For me anyway, with hard work and medication it has been much easier to stay one step ahead.

Piano teacher say in upgrade to an acoustic piano by anonpiano1234in piano

[–]newfflews 2 points3 points ago

I'm all for acoustic too, but there are digital keyboards with sound programs that attempt to model sympathetic resonance. They're getting pretty detailed these days. Of course, a speaker is not a sound board and there is no way to mimic the magnificent way the latter fills the room!
