Economics for someone who is skeptical about Libertarian economics by koolbeans777in Libertarian

[–]mrorbitman 0 points1 point ago

from a non-biased perspective

This is difficult. I see a lot of people recommending Mises, Hayek, Rothbard, etc. These are PROFOUNDLY intelligent men, but I would not consider their teachings to be unbiased, as other Nobel-prize winning economists (eg Keynes, Krugman, Bernanke) would consider their findings to be incorrect.

All economic models are based on assumptions that are probably not true in general, and all the findings are based on those assumptions. Keynesian theory is incredibly popular today for example (virtually everyone but Libertarians think the way Keynes did) and yet Keynes's ideas were basically disproven during the period of stagflation experienced in the '70s.

Another thing that most economists don't consider is the morality of fiscal policy. From a philosophical end, perhaps we can reduce unemployment by engaging in deficit spending- but OUGHT we? In the short run it makes better lives for today's voters in today's economy, but in the long run it's our children and grandchildren that will be forced to pay back that debt- with interest. What are the moral implications of this?

Are financial and civil liberties connected? This is a question that every libertarian asks himself, but it is not something that every economist asks.

I recommend Khan Academy's video tutorials on macroeconomics- it primarily teaches Keynes (whose ideas are primarily used today) but not without reminding you that his model is based on bad assumptions, and how it could work the other way.

UMich PhD Student to Challenge Rep. Dingell (D-MI) for seat in Congress by jyhwei5070in uofm

Oh my gosh! Dan is currently my GSI for Econ 401 this spring. I had no idea he was doing this. He's a really great, patient guy and an adequate teacher. I'm going to ask him if he'll do an AMA this week.

Maddow - Michigan legislature usurping democracy: Immediate effect, "emergency manager" laws, and bill vote count fraud by [deleted]in Libertarian

[–]mrorbitman 0 points1 point ago

I actually just live in Michigan and follow the local news here. It was big news when the budget passed, and it doesn't take more than a quick google search to find articles about it. I did remember incorrectly though, it's the first balanced budget in 30 years, not ten.

Also, I'm not trying to defend Rick Snyder, he's a totalitarian kind of guy and I even signed a petition to remove him from office. But I do have an appreciation for balanced budgets and the fact that the Michigan budget is balanced now is something that I thought some Libertarians might find interesting.

Should I choose U of M? by hananabammockin uofm

[–]mrorbitman 1 point2 points ago

the outcome of this is best gpa possible at the best school possible (in your major) for the lowest price possible. It's a good option but if you do this make sure you know EXACTLY WHAT DEGREE YOU WANT and make sure that the classes you're taking at OCC move you toward that degree. Also be ready for the classes to be SIGNIFICANTLY more challenging after the transfer to UM.

how true is this? do grad schools really just look at a number when deciding who to admit?

If this was posted on malehairadvice, it would have gotten maybe 10 comments and 30 upvotes. Maybe mfa is a better place to post this stuff.

Retaking AP classes in college? by FudgeMonkeysin college

[–]mrorbitman 2 points3 points ago

Honestly, do NOT retake classes. I took calc AB in high school and moved on to calc 2, which I aced. A friend of mine who was smart as fuck in high school at the same university as me bombed calc 1 (he decided to retake it to get acquainted with college) and he regrets it. It will cause more harm that good to retake, you'll get bored or cocky. Plus you paid 80 bucks for that exam to save the few thousand dollars you would have paid to take the class, doesn't make sense not to move on.

I don't get it, do you mean it would say, for example EE '14? Then people would know I'm in the school of engineering already. Whereas if it said ECON '14, people would know that's an LSA kid. No need to differentiate if we can put our majors.

Might want to do colors for people from Flint/Dearborn though?

EECS370 + EECS 215 + EECS281 = ? by Daverritin uofm

[–]mrorbitman 0 points1 point ago

You'll die. 215 is not a difficult class, but 370+281 at the same time is suicide. The project due dates tend to line up and the workload is pretty intense, ESPECIALLY for 281.

If you're planning on programming in your future, 281 is probably the most important class that employers look at. You're gonna want to do well in that one.

These are some cheap lookin' shirts, I'd honestly rather pay 15 for a nice shirt than 8 bucks for this "free" one.

Philosophically, no. But it's a fact that she left out of the story.

1). Rachel Maddow is a dolt

2). Her bottom line is completely correct in this video but consider

3). For the first time in over a decade, Michigan has balanced it's budget.

Social Darwinism vs. Tyranny of Majority (ethics/political question) by mrorbitmanin philosophy

So are you saying that the ends justify the means?

That what's best for the majority outweighs the rights of the individual?

Stargell is definitely under threat of violence. If you are robbed at gunpoint, but never shot, hasn't an act of violence been committed against you (armed robbery)?

In many ways the islanders and the armed robber and committing similar acts.
