Agreed. I guess the trick, as always is to balance compact and visually pleasing, it seems like there's a lot of folding tables out in the market that service both and conveniently enough, there's a company called Scrim King that makes scrims for DJ tables specifically. Just when you think you've spent your last cent on MIDI controllers, right? :)

Ah, same predicament here, I'm in NYC and I think most places will supply. Well hopefully anyway :) I was looking at the Odyssey folding table, that seems really nice and compact and I should be able to carry it by myself. I like the space of the type of folding tables you've picked, but it seems like it'd be a bitch to carry if you're just by yourself :/

Oh god that is such good advice. I spent so much time worrying if I met the standards of the relentless Online Armchair Engineer because of their endless judgmental talk over analyzing spectrums and using offensively expensive hardware and guess what... it all came back around and managed to get my results by sticking to basics. Don't worry about how you'll get "there", do it the way YOU want to do it until it gets there. Seriously. No one knows anything.

Oh FM8 is powerful as hell, absolutely. My issue with it is that when it comes to sculpting a sound, it's very bipolar. You either work with the presets and get minor control over tone and timbre with an "easy" version of the synth controls (which can get you a long way, truth be told), or you dive into the deep end with complex routing and ridiculously in-depth tweaking. It sometimes feels like choosing between IKEA, or cutting down a tree and sanding it down to a chair every time you need to sit down :)

Operator is deceptively powerful, especially for bass sounds. You can get some terrific tone out of it and I find fudging around with it can be a bit more intuitive and straightforward. Also it uses substantially less processing power, which can be a concern when you layer that shit up as much as I do. 10 operators versus 10 FM8s or Massives will be a lot lighter and easier to tweak in real time.

Having said, I find myself more often than not using both to an almost equal degree the more I learn about them and figure out what's computationally cheaper while maintaining the analog warmth.

OR these are just excuses for me not knowing my pears from my apples and RTFMing FM8 :) but I prefer the more glibby excuse.

Thanks!! A few instruments were recorded in Logic, but it's mostly tweaked Operator instruments, Live's Vocoder, a little FM8, sampled bass, held together with glue and Ozone 4! I also used a Reason plugin with samples from 60s soul-style horns and Rewired it back to Ableton. It took several tweaks to get them to sound natural though (along with some generous stereo delay), we all know how midi brass can turn out :)
