"Big Fun in the Big Town", a very nice documentary about hiphop pioneers in New York 1986. feat: L.L. Cool J, Last Poets, Grandmaster Flash and many more... by mieksemaksein LetsTalkMusic

[–]mieksemakse[S] 0 points1 point ago

What's so amazing about this is that many of the artists were still aproachable back then. A year later it could never have been made. The documentary gives you a real sense of seeing history unfolding.

I am Steve Albini, ask me anything by steve_albiniin IAmA

[–]mieksemakse 1 point2 points ago

  1. Which producers or recording engineers have influenced you?

  2. Are there certain sounds or recordings that haunt you and would have liked to create or capture yourself?

  3. Is your professional work as a producer/recording engineer comparable to being a painter, photographer, cameraman or cinematographer?

Thanks!

History of the "Amen Break", a six-second drum sample that spawned several entire musical subcultures by admoroboin LetsTalkMusic

[–]mieksemakse 0 points1 point ago

Are there more commentary documentaries like this out there? I really liked the fact that it takes a small but influencial 'sample' and put it into the context of musical culture in general? That makes the break just as important as a musical instrument such as perhaps a certain make of guitar or the invention of the analog synthesizer.

What music press used to (or still) influence your listening habits? by apusapusin LetsTalkMusic

Wow, that sounds a lot like what I'm looking for at the moment. The current music scene doesn't excite me much, but I do get crazy about seventies dub reggae. This kind of magazine would be a great guide into the unknown. thanks for the tip.

That's an oldie but goodie. Makes an excellent point that music will thrive when other musicians are allowed to reuse an reinterpret a work.

Albums which have production so prominent it could be considered 'the extra member of the band'... by devotion303in LetsTalkMusic

I was surprised to see no one has yet mentioned a reggae producer. Lee Perry and King Tubby created pure magic as early as the mid seventies, using crude home made equipment and selfbuilt studios. My vote is for the Perry produced The Congos - The heart of the congos.

This is one of the tracks that haunts me to this day, with a beautiful animation by the quay brothers.

Buy a pair of Blundstones, they are priced above 100 bucks, but they'll easily last for 5 years or more (if you wear and use them every day) and are very comfortable.

I agree, the ideas and insights covered in his documentaries are sometimes so thought provoking you need to take some distance before you see the rest. And months after viewing a lot of his ideas seem to keep popping back in my head, like a lyric or melody to a pop song. There's not much on television that does that to me.

Rockers is great. I highly recommend it. A more recent title is Dancehall queen, if you're able to find it.

And there's one documentary which hasn't been released, but I've seen it at the Rotterdam festival. It's called One Love it's about a Rastafarian community in Ethiopia, some people from Jamaica went back to Ethiopia and started their own community.

Keith Hudson is one of the best. One of my heroes, too bad he's been dead for a very long time.
