Brushes in alternators usually last the life of the alternator due them riding on slip rings unlike DC generators that have brushes riding on a commutator.

The biggest problem with induction generators in cars is the need for excitation current, which would need to be AC. Since cars are DC one would have to generate the excitation current someway.

In the end the load on the engine would be about the same.

From the paragraph above what you have posted tells you what you are looking for.

Pin 41 goes to ground when the computer whats to turn the fan on, it's switching ground.

The 2K resistor is a replacement for the fan.

When the fan is off pin 41 will have 12 volts, when the fan is on pin 41 will be at 0 volts or ground.

Testing Pin 41 In order to test whether or not pin 41 goes to ground (once the required temperature has been reached), we need to use a 2k ohm ½ Watt resistor and a voltmeter. Using a voltmeter by itself will indicate that Pin 41 is grounded 100% of the time.
