Startup while currently employed? Does your employer own your IP? by hellohowdyhiin startups

I think your sentiment is in many ways commendable, but a little CYA/due dilligence doesn't hurt. If an hour of research now can prevent a lawsuit later, then its well worth it.

Why Kompu Gacha Was Banned in Japan by TylerBetablein gamedev

[–]merreborn 2 points3 points ago

Games like WoW and Diablo 3 arguably have strong "skinner box" components as well.

As to the "drug dealer" comparison, you could make a similar argument about alcohol, nicotine, or caffeine. Can we trust adults to control themselves, or do we need the nanny state to protect people from themselves?

I believe this is just an implementation of the List-Unsubscribe header. If the sender doesn't send the header, gmail can't do anything.

Most mail clients should support List-Unsubscribe these days.

Diablo 3 itemization is not broken by anakhizerin gaming

Community Manager

...It would stand to reason that were we to release an expansion...

Sounds like speculation.

It depends on the game. Some games it works, some games it doesn't.

This may have also changed over time with versions of direct x, gpu drivers, windows versions, etc.

Blizzard delays Diablo 3 real money auctions indefinitely by bootlegSaintin gamernews

Just make a 5 day waiting period between authenticator and sellable status.

What makes you think the attacker can't just wait the 5 days? Sure, this would help in some cases, but certainly not all.

I'd stopped playing when my account was stolen. The thief had control of my account for days, or perhaps weeks.

Believe me, I started using an authenticator the second I got my account back. But that's not the point.

The suggestion was to only allow selling of items from authenticated accounts -- and my point is, that wouldn't really protect anyone. If authenticators are necessary, then thieves will attach authenticators to the accounts they steal themselves.

My WoW account was stolen a year or two ago by some gold farmer who used my chars to mine ore. The "hackers" attached an authenticator to my account in the process.

So I still fail to see how this would prevent thieves from stealing accounts and selling their items.

The Facebook Fallacy: "Facebook is not only on course to go bust, but will take the rest of the ad-supported Web with it." by storkmbin Foodforthought

[–]merreborn 0 points1 point ago

Facebook will continue to lower its per-user revenues, which, given its vast inventory, will force the rest of the ad-driven Web to lower its costs

lol, no.

We all laugh at facebook's shitty CPMs, because facebook has terrible, untargeted traffic that doesn't convert. While facebook earns $1 CPMs, the rest of us with targeted sites pull down $20+ CPMs on good campaigns.

Facebook dropping their CPMs hurts targeted sites as much as walmart dropping their prices hurts ...I don't know... BMW.

Edit: I just ran through the facebook ad wizard for kicks. It's recommended CPM bid was $0.21, with maximum suggested bid of <$2

US legal row over Dish Network's ad-skipping TV box by TheRoguePractitionerin Piracy

[–]merreborn 0 points1 point ago

Again?

ReplayTV ended up filing for bankruptcy in 2003 after fighting a copyright infringement suit over the ReplayTV's ability to skip commercials.

They also hid Tivo's "30 second skip" feature, presumably for similar reasons.

So anything that has ever been touched by an account without an authenticator is permanently unsellable?

Boy, wouldn't it be a bummer if you found some ultra-rare item worth >$100 but you could never sell it?

Blizzard delays Diablo 3 real money auctions indefinitely by bootlegSaintin gamernews

[–]merreborn 1 point2 points ago

At first blush that sounds good, but it's not a fix-all.

Black market gold farmers will still "hack" accounts that don't use authenticators, take their items, and transfer them to an account that does use an authenticator to sell.

Summoner Concerns by tf2traderlolin dungeondefenders

Yep, did a ton of that last night. I could pretty much cruise and do a full lap of alchemical laboratory and scoop up hundreds of mana without getting hit.

The flight mechanic seems exploitable too. I see the "Outlander" costume introduced the mechanic months ago -- have people found interesting ways to abuse it?

Yeah, I've seen the "a rogue blizzard admin is stealing accounts to make extra money on the side!" claim get attention several times over the last few years. It's absurd.

There was a lot of really naive stuff on the net in '96, sure. But '96 is far from the early days of the internet. Usenet and SMTP were both around 15 years old at the time.

The sorts of mistakes people were making in '96 were things that people at places like Xerox PARC and Bell Labs figured out in the '70s.

I suppose what I'm getting at is, there were plenty of experts who "understood security" just fine. The internet just saw, at that time, an influx of people completely oblivious to what their predecessors had learned.

The bottom line is people are being phished

Could also be keyloggers. As an added bonus, sites like wowwiki run tons of flash ads, and new zero-day flash exploits are revealed regularly. Malicious flash ads could easily install software, and could pretty easily be targeted directly at wow-related sites.

Some Venezuelan prog. Why play 7 strings when you can play 12... insane!! by Archetixin progmetal

[–]merreborn 1 point2 points ago

Warr seems to use a single 14 string nut at the top of the neck, while this custom appears to have to separate 7 string nuts with a gap between the two.

The pickups look like relatively standard 7 string pickups installed right next to each other, which doesn't match the warr pickup configuration either.

The neck/body/headstock look generally comparable to warr though.

I actually thought initially that there were two necks with a gap between them, but the back shots make it clear that it's a single neck/fretboard (much like a warr)

I had to attend a Unemployment Seminar today to keep my unemployment benefits. I really need to vent due to the advice given. It was horrible. by Athrowawayfortodayin self

Employment is in many respects highly unregulated in the US. We get less vacation, less maternity leave, we can be fired without cause at the drop of a hat, and you can refuse to hire people just because they've been unemployed for a while.

Freedom includes the freedom to treat the workforce like shit, I guess.
