don't use "it" to describe a person, unless they're a lifeless corpse.

you can use she, he, s/he, or they. most everyone uses "they" in informal speech.

using "it" to describe a living human being is an insult in english.

Finally removed 'home' link from menu, how to ensure visitors know logo is the home button by ericfromtxin webdesign

[–]mercurialohearn 3 points4 points ago

there is no need for you to do anything else. virtually every user, young or old, new or seasoned, expects the header logo to take them home.

every single major site on the internet, including reddit, behaves in exactly this way. by making your left-aligned header logo a clickable link back to the home page, you have met user expectations and do not need to do anything else.

edit:

here is a list of the 500 most trafficked sites on the internet. while i haven't gone through all 500 to see which ones violate the convention of making a left-aligned header logo the sole link back to the home page, 100% of the sites i did view, which were the top 30 sites in the united states that did not require a login to view, all behaved in exactly this way.

this includes google, wikipedia, youtube, yahoo, msn, ebay, bing, tumblr, apple, flickr, etc., etc., etc.

unless your client specifically asks you to add a home link to the navigation, or to use something other than the header logo to link back home, don't do it.

feel free to conduct your own research.

This Is What Tyranny Looks Like: Remember when police beat Tea Party activists with batons, raided homes without warrants, unjustly arrested and strip-searched Tea Party protesters, or attacked and intimidated journalists covering Tea Party rallies? by davidreiss666in politics

a quote from howley:

[A]s far as anyone knew I was part of this cause — a cause that I had infiltrated the day before in order to mock and undermine in the pages of The American Spectator — and I wasn’t giving up before I had my story. Under a cloud of pepper spray I forced myself into the doors and sprinted blindly across the floor of the Air and Space Museum…

regardless, your statement is a fallacy, and your willingness to believe that if you haven't encountered evidence of something in reality, it hasn't happened, is duly noted.

i've raged silently at the pastors who have used the occasion of my loved ones' deaths as an opportunity to proselytize on the urgency of "getting right with god," to clam knowledge of heaven, and my loved ones' assured place in it, but this ... this would offer me not one iota of condolence. it reads like the pseudo-sentient utterance of some vast and sinister machine, who seeks to quell my anger and grief at the loss of my best friend by trying to convince me that he "lives on" as the sum of his constituent parts, efficiently recycled and redistributed to feed the living like the human batteries in the matrix.

this quote isn't comforting; it's terrifying.

Ever wonder how much better the world would be if large portions of the human race didn't believe itself rotten to the core? by allenizabethin atheism

[–]mercurialohearn 0 points1 point ago

No, it certainly isn't, not "solely by virtue of its form". No more than "religion exists" or "sport exists", or any other such existence claim.

nonsense. kant identified this type of analytical judgement of reality as a tautology more than two centuries ago. "morality exists" doesn't pertain logically to anything outside of itself. it is, in fact, predicated upon itself, which makes it a tautology, by definition.

here is a succinct explanation of this particular tautology, if you're interested:

[–]mercurialohearn 0 points1 point ago

A tautology is the opposite of a logical contradiction.

i don't know why you're telling me something i already know, or why you seemed to suggest in your previous response that a tautology was a contradiction.

when i identified "morality exists" as a tautology, i was not referring to a statement of propositional logic; instead i referred to a rhetorical statement that is true solely by virtue of its form. "morality exists" is necessarily true, in the same way that "the universe exists" is its own proof. "the universe exists (because we sense that it exists)."

that simple morality (of any kind) exists independent of a particular culture or a particular era is merely an extension of the same, self-affirming statement, unless directors_cut meant to say that morality exists independent of human invention, which is an assertion that requires some form of proof.

a tautology is not a contradiction, logical or otherwise. likewise, directors_cut does not appear to be denying morality.
