Proving umpire bias: percentage of correct calls varies based on situation by toeferin baseball

[–]marca17 0 points1 point ago

I suppose that is the heart of this discussion: we seem to have differing views on "rules."

The rules state umpires are required to enforce all of these rules. Among these rules is the definition of the strike zone. There is no rule that requires an umpire make a game more interesting by ignoring the strike zone rule. If such a rule existed, it would violate (and therefore be in direct opposition to) rule 9.01b. Baseball has nothing to do with the Bill of Rights.

Your claim-- that among the rules MLB operates under is the responsibility of the umpire to make the game more interesting by calling balls strikes-- is in direct opposition to the Official Rules of MLB. Your unwritten rule contradicts MLB's written rule. Or is there another unwritten exception "somewhere"?

MLB rules say umpires shall be responsible for the conduct of the game in accordance with these official rules and for maintaining discipline and order on the playing field during the game. No mention of a duty to make the game more interesting by calling balls strikes.

Before baseball is entertainment, it is a game. Games have rules and rules should be followed. Strikes and balls should be called based on the strike zone ONLY (whether that happens in real life is another story, as exhibited by the original post). It's as simple as that.

i think the mound is raised or lower to give either an advantage to the pitcher or hitter-- depending on the era. i think balanced schedules are a matter of perspective. but these answers (and your questions are irrelevant). your comment condones an umpire calling strikes based on what would be "interesting" rather than if the pitch was in the strike zone. that is absolutely ridiculous.

vehemently disagree. just because baseball is on tv, doesn't mean it should be fiction.

Did anyone else attend MLB's Fan Upfont 2012 event last night at Chelsea Market? by marca17in baseball

[–]marca17[S] 2 points3 points ago

Sure. The event was held at a loft-like space on the corner of 10th Ave. and 15th St, New York City. They had free food: bratwursts, hot dogs, philly cheese steaks, peanuts, popcorn and milkshakes (I think, didn't try it). And free beer and wine. There were large Mac stations set up around the room. One was free phone engraving with your team logo. Other stations primarily demonstrated their new products for the 2012 season, like AtBat, MLBTV, and some XBox tie-in. Frank Thomas, Jack Morris, Jeff Nelson and Mark McLemore were there to chat with attendees. There was a raffle with prizes of an XBox, 2 tickets to any game and I think an MLBTV subscriptions (I didn't win). Everyone got a gift bag with a t-shirt, baseball cap and baseball signed by the 4 players mentioned above. The event lasted about 2 hours.

I agree: very interesting. It seemed the show implied "no language, no inner monologue."

You can amend your draft date up until a few hours before it's scheduled. That has been my experience.
