The BBC has implemented the EU cookie directive - rather elegantly by Angstweevilin web_design

I just checked the cookies they were using, and they had exactly 30 cookies set in my case.

To be honest, targeted advertisement cookies are the only ones that people will care about and should disable.

Personally I dislike "themes". I prefer some diversity in design for related stuff. And they do have simplicity in common.

Remembering variable names is indicative of a good memory, not a good programmer. All the programmers I know google stuff all the time. Especially true for PHP where variable names and parameter ordering are about as consistent as dice throws.

Why do almost all creatures have two nostrils? by 8ty9in askscience

[–]manixrock -2 points-1 points ago

That's really interesting, would have never thought of it.

One other possible advantage I noticed with having two nostrils is during really cold times, when the air is very cold, you end up breathing through only one nostril at a time. I suspect the other one is "repairing itself" from the damage done by the cold. The two nostrils seem to shift every about half-an-hour or so. This is more-so true if you have any kind of physical damage in your nostrils.

It's relatively simple to bust a pedo ring once the police get a hint of their existence and foothold.

So why is there still so much CP out there? Simple. There are lots of pedos.

MySQL cross row data? by ffxpwnsin PHP

[–]manixrock 1 point2 points ago

This is good advice. However as OP stated, this is for learning purposes. I think in this case it's more important for him to solve this in the easiest way, not necessarily the "right" way. This way the "right" way to do things will come by itself from common sense.

MySQL cross row data? by ffxpwnsin PHP

[–]manixrock -2 points-1 points ago

$query = "UPDATE ".$DBPrefix."users SET balance = balance + 5 WHERE refer = '".mysql_real_escape_string($referName)."'";

The mysql_real_escape_string() function is used to prevent SQL injection. You should also make sure that the refer column is unique (add a UNIQUE index on it).

For the full UPDATE syntax see http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/update.html

The law would also be good if it would only apply to third party websites. Facebook has no business tracking users cross-domain.

A counter-example would be google's analytics. So maybe the law should allow websites that track anonymous user information.

Nothing rhymes with orange? by ErrorlessGnomein AdviceAnimals

I thought about translating this joke in Romanian, but then realized we use a double negative to say that, something like:

Nothing doesn't rhyme with orange

Guess I won't be doing that joke after all.

The Purpose Of Spectacular Wealth, According To A Spectacularly Wealthy Guy by trot-trotin business

[–]manixrock 1 point2 points ago

To me none of was any different than what wealthy people trying to defend their position have always said:

most economists believe society often benefits from investments by the wealthy

By that line of thought we should give all our wealth to a monarchy. That way, they can't possibly spend all that wealth on their own lifestyle, and will actually invest an even larger percentage into investments that will benefit the rest of the population. Sure it will, but not as much as, you know, not taking the money from them in the first place.

The whole article was a slap on the face for anyone who's not super-rich and lacking empathy.

Scientists Write Open Letter To Anti-GM Campaigners by TheOriginalNooksin science

[–]manixrock -1 points0 points ago

I find it curious that you are presenting the story as told by Monsanto lawyers, and link to monsanto's website, especially considering that the lawsuit in question was decided against Monsanto's version of events.

In an out of court settlement finalized on March 19, 2008, Percy Schmeiser has settled his lawsuit with Monsanto. Monsanto has agreed to pay all the clean-up costs of the Roundup Ready canola that contaminated Schmeiser's fields. Also part of the agreement was that there was no gag-order on the settlement and that Monsanto could be sued again if further contamination occurred. Schmeiser believes this precedent setting agreement ensures that farmers will be entitled to reimbursement when their fields become contaminated with unwanted Roundup Ready canola or any other unwanted GMO plants.

It's also curious that my original comment got downvoted considering it's closer to the lawsuit conclusion that your version.

[–]manixrock -4 points-3 points ago

Last I heard Monsanto was suing farmers on whose lands the Monsanto seeds were blown by the wind for "stealing" their patented seeds. So not only were their crops contaminated by this company, they are now being sued for it.

There is also the bigger question of whether we want food to be (indirectly) patented. I think many would agree it goes too far.
