I would beg to differ, I think there used to be a "less-is-more" aesthetic when it came to skin, it left more to the imagination.

It was, by comparison to today's "smut", very understated and nuanced. What was risque then would pass as tame to today's viewer. Take a look at the poses and facial expressions of pinup photos: the implication was that these were normal girls caught in revealing circumstances, the titillation arose from seeing what you weren't supposed to see. Burlesque, when done well, stimulates the imagination more than anything. Couple that with the fact that it's about dance and music and it tends more towards "art" than "smut". Of course the two co-exist in the same space, but in the same way that there's a difference between Botticelli's Birth of Venus and a Playboy centerfold the distinction is all in the execution, and Ms. von Teese executes it well, in my opinion.

What we see today, where a girl is fully nude and spread so wide you can see her kidneys, there is no illusion of propriety unmasked, it's intended to be as graphic and shocking as possible. There is nothing left to the imagination and nobody's confusing it for art.

That is, I believe, the distinction that's important.

I'm against it simply because I don't think people need to know. If one wants to identify then they're free to do so in their comment, but there shouldn't be any pressure what-so-ever to do so. It also, conceivably, acts as a barrier to entry into participation. People feel less inclined to participate if they feel like they're not part of the in-crowd (even if it's really easy to add and nobody is required to do it, it's still intimidating for some, especially newer users).

90% of flair on this site is completely useless and just adds more circle-jerkery.

I have a friend who got hers done because she was tired of clothes not fitting right, I mean ultimately it comes down to vanity because you're concerned about your appearance, but the same could be said of washing your hair or wearing clean clothes.

At some point we accept that there is necessary level of vanity, it just depends where you draw that line.
