For anyone looking for a distro without the proprietary check out gNewSense. It's based on Ubuntu and is updated with every Ubuntu LTS release.

It was expected actually, Shuttleworth's goals are to have interoperabilities with proprietary technologies, free software is probably the last goal on Canonical's list. It's ashame becasue Ubuntu rode on free software to it's fame. I guess it's a common trend, like MySQL and other projects. Free software is a great way to market software, I would expect more companies trying to directly exploit this in the future.

You can run it well on most systems, just have to take advantage of PowerDevil's powermanager settings if you do have a very old system.
