Reddit, I just got engaged. Now where the hell do we start? by HitBullWinSteakin AskReddit

[–]lordyloo 0 points1 point ago

First up - draw up a budget. Will parents help fund the wedding or are the two of you paying for yourselves? Venues are the first places to be booked, so the wait list can be pretty long. Draw up a list of folks you plan to invite to the wedding and the reception. You can have a small wedding, but a larger reception, or you can invite everyone to both events. If you are going to have a lot of friends and family from out of town, check to see if there are any major events going on in the city on the same day (this will make a difference in availability of hotel rooms and price). You can also negotiate prices with blocks of rooms for hotels. Brunch receptions are cheaper than evening receptions. Then you will want to book a photographer and a music person. You wedding photographer will also have good resources on cool places to get married, good dj's and bands, caterers, etc. During the reception the photographer and dj work together, so it is good if they get along.

So, money/budget, how many attendees to 1. wedding and 2. reception, what time of day did you want to have the events (wedding and reception are 2 different events), photographer, music, caterers, dress and groom's outfit, gifts for wedding party, hotels for guests (and a list of things to do or places to eat when they are in town), party favors. Basically, it is a lot of work, but keep in mind that friends and family are coming to support you. Make sure to take care of your guests well.

Married, former chemist, turned small business consultant who loves to cook. We had a successful small business, but it got completely wiped out in the economic crash of 2008. My passion is helping folks start businesses, and although I like getting paid for it, I would also do it for free. I read voraciously, and I have read 3 novels in a day (avg. length 250-300 pages/book).

I'm basically going to mention CISPA in every interview I do about facebook's IPO. by kn0thingin SOPA

[–]lordyloo 12 points13 points ago

In the field of Advertising there is a concept whereby a new brand or product needs to be mentioned several times (14 - 20) before the new brand/product/concept reaches a tipping point. In this case, kn0wthing is trying to help push CISPA to reach this point from a handful of people who are aware of its existence to the general public being informed.

How do you ask how much other freelancers in the area charge? by idesignwebsitesin freelance

[–]lordyloo 0 points1 point ago

My main point is don't get hung up on price to begin with! If you promote your services based on "hey, I charge in the middle of everyone else," you do not distinguish yourself in the client's eyes. Focus on things like, excellence in service, trustworthiness, fast turn around time, no job too large or too small, or any of the other myriad of things that will make you stand out in a crowded field. There are folks who charge leaps and bounds higher than the competition, and they still get a lot of work because they back-up that work with excellence. Is what I am saying making any sense?

How do you ask how much other freelancers in the area charge? by idesignwebsitesin freelance

[–]lordyloo 0 points1 point ago

Short answer: typically $500 - $3000. Longer answer - it depends what the client wants and/or if you are using a template or coding from scratch. For instance, if building a shopping cart, you can use Magento Go, or you can use the much more flexible, but much harder core (and expensive) Magento. It really comes down to what your client wants, and what you are capable of delivering.

fern - i see your point, however, it can be a trap for freelancers/new small biz owners. If one has no experience and/or no samples, s/he needs to first build up in these areas. That can be achieved by mock websites, or better yet, by contacting charities or new small businesses and creating these sites for free or for trade for the purpose of building a portfolio. When new to business or freelancing, we have a tendency to get nervous that client's will want to see past work. Those who have been in the biz for a while, have the confidence that they know how to do a project. Instead of pouring over past samples, they are more likely to say to the client, "what are your specific needs and wants," and then fulfill the client's expectations. We have a tendency to think "wow - the client will be blown away by my past work - i'm so hired." From their perspective, they think "ok - the past work is fine, and all, but what can this person do for me and my business." The disconnect between what we think the client thinks (and will be impressed by) is often more prominent in those with less experience.

cwn44 - is definitely on point here! Stick with what you know well (and are an expert in), and charge accordingly. Do not try to underbid other freelancers, or you will be doing a lot of free work, for client's who will not value your efforts. When you base your work on price alone, you get get clients who are only looking for the cheapest services. Focus instead on excellence and areas of expertise, and charge handsomely; however, you will need to provide a service that is well beyond their expectation. Do what you say you are going to do, in the allotted time (or sooner than expected), and go above and beyond your client's expectation. How you present your sales pitch is also crucial.

Today, I sang a duet through my kitchen window with a stranger in the adjacent building singing through his bathroom window. Have you ever formed an unexpected bond with a totally random person? by mixigsin AskReddit

I was driving a 15 hour trip by myself (straight through). I only had about four hours left, and I matched the speed of the guy in front of me. We drove that way for about an hour and a half (he even slowed down for me when my hunk of junk was trying to go up a steep hill). He finally got off an exit leading to another highway. We waved good bye, and drove our separate ways. Thank you highway buddy!

Macbook Pro overheating by thetaj81in mac

[–]lordyloo 0 points1 point ago

From my experience, it may be the fans or thermal tape. Our Mac Book Pro ended getting so hot, it has scorch marks. At that point, it was beyond repair. However, try and take it to the Apple store, and see if they can do something about it.

Heya Punk:

  • We do not have a FB page, yet, although someone is more than welcome to create one (just let me know, so I can keep track of suggestions, et al.)
  1. We were thinking of starting at 6:00 pm, maybe a little later, since there is not air conditioning (as of yet) at Jax Hax. We'll probably need fans!!!!

  2. It is a warehouse on the second floor. Not sure how Jax Hax would feel about a bunch of water around electronics, or even the logistics of filling up a pool on the second floor. We might could have one outside. However, I'll bring it up as a suggestion!

  3. Booze is allowed. We will be having a handful of over 21 folks volunteer to card, and have a system of distinguishing between the over and under 21 folks. Since it is a "private party" (and there is no "for profit" motive), I think we should be okay.

  4. We have a band that is offering to play for an hour, but the speakers would be great before/after the live music.
