In the event of a large scale nuclear war, involving two super powers like the U.S. and Russia, how long would it take for survivors in underground shelters to be able to repopulate the earth? by Myzenthingmanin askscience

Are there any two foods/edible materials that are harmless when consumed separately and dangerous when consumed together? by theartfulgoatin askscience

[–]lightspeed23 0 points1 point ago

If you count medicine as 'food' (a bit of a strech though), then it can be a problem to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruitjuice while taking some medicines as it will inhibit the functionality of that medicine (so you're not cured of whatever the medicine is for). This of course can be considered dangerous.

MPAA / RIAA To Boost Cyberlocker and VPN Revenues by EquanimousMindin technology

[–]lightspeed23 0 points1 point ago

Actually there is mandatory logging all over most of the EU. I currently use a Danish VPN that is legally delivering out out of Bahamas to avoid this logging requirement.

So basically they can introduce all the logging they want. There will always be countries that don't require it and VPN companies to base their service out of there.

There is a drop because they can't measure it when users use a VPN.... so... no real drop.

Google only makes the OS someone else earns on tthe hardware.

Perhaps Apple is making most of its money on the hardware... but in reality that is difficult to separate.

As a Dane I also completely don't understand this about US culture. Perhaps it is the massmedia that gives it the silent treatment? But even so, the young generation are getting a lot of their news from the interwebs so what gives?

I also disagree with the notion that it is exploitive for an employee to enter freely into a contract with an employer to exchange labor for work

It''s not a free choice if the alternative is to starve and/or not be able to afford health insurrance etc etc.

if you find the terms of those providing jobs unacceptable you have the freedom to create your own business.

Not all people have this capability. YOU might posses this capability, but everyone is not like you. Perhaps try to take the broader perspective, it is typical for capitalists to think that everyone has the same abilities as themselves.

onsider a situation where a company wanted to offer you an extra $20K year in exchange for less paid vacation

The problem is all the companies that will offer you $0k a year exchange for less paid vacation! What is to stop them? competition for the best workers? yes that works with higly desirable skills/education/experience, but not for the junior employee or the unskilled labour.

Ultimately the beauty of a free-market/capitalist system is that it takes advantage of the fact that both sides of the negotiating table are acting in their own best interest, which doesn't require any outside cajoling to make happen.

False. Most employees are FORCED to enter into this largely one-sided relationship because they don't have any negotiating power and because otherwise they will starve, have no health insurrance, can't put their kids to school etc.

Clearly workers have been exploited also in socialist systems.

Not really. What socialist systems are you talking about? Bear in mind that the essence of a socialist system is that the employees themselves OWN the company they work for and also bearing in mind that many so-called 'socialist' states are nothing of the sort.

Instead it assumes that we are inherently greedy and leverages that to create a system where each of us working in our own self-interest

Greed in inherent in humans. The problem is that capitalism nurtures and encourages this greed. It rewards the most greedy and punishes the least greedy. Most people instinctively dislikes a greedy person, but somehow when money/power is involved this behavior is allowed and even encouraged?

They're not bankers. Some of them are, but they're quite a broad bunch. There are people from IT, politics, media, industry, banking etc. etc. The list of who meets there is actually public.

In St. Petersburg, Russia, two men were arrested on Thursday for holding up a sign reading "Homosexuality Is Normal." It marks the first arrests on the strength of the city's new law against disseminating information on homosexuality. by sinnnnnerin worldnews

[–]lightspeed23 10 points11 points ago

He should have written "Homosexuality is Natural"

There are about 10% of the population that hare homosexual.

Since 'normal' means 'average' then it can't be said that homosexuality is 'normal'. 10% of anything is not 'normal'.

You wouldn't say that it is 'normal' to be a genius level IQ either, it is however a natural condition.

Just being a realist here, I have nothing against homosexuals but it is not a 'normal' condition it is a 'natural' condition.

[–]lightspeed23 0 points1 point ago

Not negative, I would prefer the word 'realistic' instead. But that's all very subjective.

The reality is that in a capitalist society the regular employees are almost by definition always exploited (except in the few co-ops that do exist). Huge profits for shareholders and bonuses for bosses even if they do a crappy job.

Also look at the recent scandal with Apple and their 'slaves' in China. Apple is making an obscene amount of profit, but the people who make their products are seing NONE of it and get only a subsistence salary and long hours.

The reality is that most corporations that get something produced are getting it produced in China or somewhere else where they can exploit workers.

Then there are all the employees of corporations located within the US. It is a well known fact that employees are expected to work much longer hours than they get paid for (overtime), this is especially evident in the financial sector. Interns work for NO PAY for e.g. 6 months, junior employees work 80 hr weeks (in reality) but get paid for 40, etc. Many can't handle the pressure, a few make it to higher earnings later, but at what cost to their health (psychological) and social life and children?.

I've worked in two corporations, one American (but not in the US) that had the whole 'office space' vibe, and the other was a European company (smallish) that was quite nice until it got bought up by a very large corporation who then immediately proceeded to actually break the law with regards to employee-rights.

This is all consistent with what I am saying.

You say that you are not exploited, but perhaps you have just been indoctrinated into believing that your crummy job is 'normal' and therefore ok. An example could be paid vacations, I gather that it is normal in the US to have 2 weeks paid leave (if you're lucky). Where I am from you always get 5 weeks paid leave by law. That's just one little example of exploitation.
