TIL the photographer of the Pulitzer Prize winning photo depicting a vulture waiting for a starving child to die, committed suicide due to guilt, persecution and depression. by Oatmeal_robotin todayilearned

Thankyou very much for that, I've been in a discussion about the veracity of the image on another thread. Very kind of you.

just from the point of view of the child, i don't know. i'm probably projecting things onto the image that may not exist. maybe he's trying to stay strong for his mum.

that account comes from another journalist, though. do you know if Carter says the same, or whether he claimed she was on her way to a feeding centre, as was originally reported with the image?

your choice, i suppose, as to who you believe for the context. does the 'main' story of her trying to reach a feeding centre come from Carter himself, do you know? how much credibility i give to the other account depends a lot on that.

ok, i'm bored of this. i don't really understand your issue, but the photo is not false. the image conveys a lot of things, and you can read into it what you will, but in reality all i've seen in it is a child so thin as to look alien and a scavenger in the background. the vulture does not need to eat the child, or even be considering doing so for the image to be powerful, or true.

thanks for taking the time to reply, but all i wanted to do was point out that the picture is not 'false/fake' as you said it was.

you've completely misunderstood me, and now i'm full of curry and beer and i'm going to have to try and explain.

i am not attaching any values to the military, or the joining of the same, i am simply commenting on the situation in the picture. i still remember falling off my bike and trying not to cry as a kid, and to know that he is in a place i could never imagine and reacting in the same way as i did to a small cut is why i call him brave.

i hope that made it clear. i am not really looking to discuss the overall issue of military bravery, suffice to say you've misread, or i've miswritten.

yep, i know what objective means. there is a composition involved, for sure, but the picture just is what it is. the only way it could be false is if it were photoshopped or staged.

the 'vulture waiting for a kid to die' bit may not be true, but i'm not sure if that was what i said.

thanks, had a read. do you mean facist when you say nazi?

Reddit, what is the most powerful image you have ever seen? by tokerjoker11in AskReddit

[–]lifeunistudent 5 points6 points ago

you're just applying your own truth to it from an even more distant viewpoint, rather than actually looking objectively. you'll notice i haven't actually said the vulture is going to eat the girl at all. you are arguing against an interpretation of the image that nobody has put forward.

so, you've taken a quote from wiki, which is preceded by the words "without knowing the photograph of Kevin Carter, took a picture in a similar situation" to describe the person being quoted, and that is justification for calling it fake?

the picture is real, the circumstances are real, and the photographer was real. if you have a problem with how people interpret it, that's a different matter altogether. however, as i have said before, there is nothing fake about this image.

never seen that before. without knowing the context, that bravery of that child is astounding.

no, it isn't. i only say this for others, i have no idea what the point of saying the picture is fake was, but the image is 100% genuine, and he did commit suicide.

a few things, if it's ok...

i translated, but couldn't find any mention of nazism, can you provide more information as to who you are accusing of this and maybe a spot of evidence, please?

second, it appears the person who yelled at the sadly deceased was the wife of the man who assaulted Motta, is this right?

last, am i reading it right when it says he was punched once?

i was more concerned with the fact he's a clearly dangerous driver who shouldn't be on the road, rather than catching him up and stomping him. my experience of the kind of person in the story is that they are more likely to do this if they know it is a woman they're cutting up, rather than a big guy.

Lawyers, what cases are you sorry you won? by navysilkin AskReddit

this post pretty much sums up everything wrong with the legal system, and the 'people' who populate it. a moral epiphany that came to late to save a woman from having her life destroyed, and a man who would happily watch a child rapist/murderer go free for a fee, always hiding behind some excuse.

yes, the guy who you said caused the crash is the guy i asked a question about. i don't actually want proof, but i know if this had happened to me (as you have described it) my concern would be finding whoever caused it, to prevent them from doing the same again.

why did you find it interesting that i would question your veracity?

IAmA survivor of road rage that went too far. by QueenKristenin IAmA

[–]lifeunistudent 3 points4 points ago

seems like if this were true the guy would have a case to answer over dangerous driving, but you don't mention it anywhere in the text. did the police not want to find out what had caused the accident, or did your insurance company not either?

you are a complete idiot, the kind of person i would warn my children about associating with, and add nothing to any worthwhile society. your views are retarded, false and simply reveal your own ignorance, insecurity and pathetic fear of the unknown. i suspect your own inadequacies are driving this small-testicled, backwards hate, and i urge you to live in silence, never communicating with humans, for the good of others, forever.

yeah, i can't speak for the world, but i play a bit of 6-a-side now and then, and if you started racially abusing any of the black or asian kids you'd get fucked. generally i'm too out of breath for any 'trash talk', but i suppose it depends where you play.

it's not something you'd want here, true, but don't there have to be consequences for actions too? he is a unique case, because he got masses of publicity in certain circles, and i'm not saying the system is perfect, but i think he crossed a line personally, and deserved some kind of penalty.
