The music isn't boring. The instruments don't suck. The music is plenty exciting and the audience is surely smart enough to understand it. The problem is that the audience (if you're to be taken as an example) comes in with this pre-concieved notion that the music is stuffy and boring because the state of music education is so god-awful that even though you've been playing violin for 9 years you still haven't heard a breathtaking harpsichord performance. A Gavotte, whether it is in major or minor, is a dance! French Baroque music (and the German Baroque music it influenced) is all structured around dance! Kings and queens danced to Gavottes, Minuets, and Sarabandes!

How is this not exciting?

"You hear it ticking over, trotting, having a little canter here and there, getting a bit frisky, and then taking a trial run as its helpers encourage it onward, keening with bated breath. It hauls itself back in again, does another quick circuit … and then the other instruments fall silent. It stands free and alone, pawing at the ground, breathing deeply, gathering its strength, trotting forward…and then it makes its move — running … hurtling … flying … climbing … clambering … pushing … panting … twisting … thrashing … pounding at the ground … pounding … pounding … suddenly breaking away, running onward desperately, and then, with one last little unexpected step up in the bass, it’s home and free — the main tune charges in triumphantly and it’s all over bar the weeping and dancing (i.e., the second and third movements)."

--Douglas Adams, on the subject of the harpsichord part of the 5th Brandenburg Concerto

So you want detailed and exciting program notes? Do you want a pre-concert "Explain like I'm five" talk? Do you want a brief introduction before each piece? Hell, I'll even give form charts, harmonic reductions, and a written analysis of each piece to every single audience member if it will mean that there will be people in the seats.

But as a performer, I feel that it's insulting to the audience if I don't make the effort to dress nicely! It's a visual way of saying that I care that they came out to see me play, much like bowing.

What do you want classical musicians to do? Quite frankly, we're so poor that we'll try pretty much anything to get warm bodies in the seats.

This one is really tricky, because time is the greatest judge of what is good and what is not really worth digging up again and again. One of the many reasons that Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven are so notable is because their music isn't particularly representative of the music of their time - they had revolutionary ideas in regards to form, harmony, and melody. And while Mozart and Beethoven were well-known in their times, Bach was not very well-known until Mendelssohn brought his works to light.

Looking at the Grammy award winners in recent years, I would have to say that John Cage and George Crumb stand out the most to me as artists who break the mold and have brilliant ideas regarding musical structure, but who also have received critical acclaim.

I'm also a big fan of (in no particular order):

Michael Colgrass (Arctic Dreams, Wild Riot of the Shaman's Dreams)

Lowell Liebermann (Flute sonata)

Toru Takemitsu (Air, Masques, To the Sea, Rain Tree...)

Steve Reich (Vermont Counterpoint, Electric Counterpoint)

Joseph Schwantner (And the Mountains Rising Nowhere)

David Lang (Child - Sweet Air, Increase)

I have a degree in music performance (flutist, if you couldn't tell from the example above), and modern music is one of my passions. Sometimes it can be frightening or obscure to the casual listener, but I really wish that it was a lot more accessible. One of the biggest hurdles (at least in my opinion) is that so much modern music requires the full attention of the listener, and doesn't make very good background music but is INCREDIBLE in a live performance. It's hard to grab the attention of your audience in the first place when the Berio Sequenza sounds like a fucking nightmare on the radio in the car on the way to the dentist, even though it's an amazing sensory experience and quite a turn down the rabbit hole in a live performance.

Whoops, that turned into a ramble. I guess what you should get out of this is that you shouldn't just ask who the greatest composers are, you should go to live concerts featuring modern composers and find out for yourself.

Bill Maher: Liberty University Is Not A Real School by btrflyin politics

[–]leavesontrees 12 points13 points ago

It is entirely possible to screw up English in an overly-religious environment. I went to a Catholic high school, and when we studied Hawthorne in my 11th grade English class, we skipped over all the sexual innuendo in his short stories. The sexual innuendo in Hawthorne's short stories, as I learned in a college English class, is extremely important, as it is a commentary on the hypocrisy of the Puritans. When you consider the parallels between the Puritans of Hawthorne's stories and the Catholic church, you can see why we skipped over an integral part of Hawthorne's writings. We also never read anything by Kurt Vonnegut because humanism doesn't go over very well in a Catholic school.

So as you can see, it's entirely possible to screw up English when too many authors raise important questions about the nature of god, religious institutions, and the dangers of blind faith.

What is something that society finds repulsive/taboo/etc. that you see no problem with? (Possibly NSFW) by ruckus666in AskReddit

[–]leavesontrees 4 points5 points ago

From the source I linked:

"The greatest costs associated with the death penalty occur prior to and during trial, not in post-conviction proceedings. Even if all post-conviction proceedings (appeals) were abolished, the death penalty would still be more expensive than alternative sentences.

Trials in which the prosecutor is seeking a death sentence have two separate and distinct phases: conviction (guilt/innocence) and sentencing. Special motions and extra time for jury selection typically precede such trials.

More investigative costs are generally incurred in capital cases, particularly by the prosecution.

When death penalty trials result in a verdict less than death or are reversed, taxpayers first incur all the extra costs of capital pretrial and trial proceedings and must then also pay either for the cost of incarcerating the prisoner for life or the costs of a retrial (which often leads to a life sentence)."

[–]leavesontrees 3 points4 points ago

If there were more relaxed regulations around the death penalty, there would be a higher risk of putting the wrong criminal to death. Please read the source provided in my previous post. Also, the death penalty does not act as a deterrent to crime. In fact, states without the death penalty have a lower murder rate than states with the death penalty. Source

TwoXers, do you have pierced ears? by femboostin TwoXChromosomes

[–]leavesontrees 17 points18 points ago

All the piercing horror stories in this thread are completely avoidable, and I feel the need to write up a PSA of sorts.

(1) Don't get your ears pierced at the mall! Piercing guns by their very plastic nature cannot be adequately sterilized, and punching slightly-pointy jewelry through flesh causes blunt force trauma. This increases the time needed to heal the piercing. Yes, it is possible to get piercings at Claire's that heal up without too much issue, BUT it will hurt more than if you get pierced with a needle AND it will take longer to heal. If you have any metal sensitivities, a mall piercing simply will not work.

(2) NEVER get a cartilage piercing with a gun. It can shatter the cartilage.

(3) Don't do your own piercings! It is very unlikely that you can adequately sterilize needles and jewelry in your own bathroom or kitchen. It will also take you longer to do the piercing, which means more pain. Furthermore, exact placement of the piercing will be trickier. This is a body modification, and you want to make sure that it's done correctly.

(4) Don't clean your new piercings with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol! This irritates the piercing and makes the healing process much longer. Instead, soak your piercings in a warm sea-salt solution, and then gently rinse it off with water after. Be careful to not over-wash either, as this can cause irritation as well.

(5) Get your piercings done by a reputable piercer. A reputable piercer will have an autoclave to adequately sterilize all their equipment. They will be able to poke holes in you with a minimum amount of pain and in the correct location. Their needles and jewelry should not contain nickel so as to greatly reduce the amount of metal-sensitivity issues. The needles they use are incredibly sharp, and cut through skin without causing trauma. This decreases the time needed to properly heal the piercing, thus reducing the amount of time it is susceptible to infection.

Together, 2X, we can avoid infected, irritated, and poorly-placed piercings!

Facial cleanser making skin MORE oily? by AnnaLemmain TwoXChromosomes

[–]leavesontrees 0 points1 point ago

Harsh cleansers will make your skin overproduce oil. For me, I found that the best acne remedy was basic Dove soap in the shower followed by moisturizer with SPF. Going with the "nuclear options" from age 13 to 20 didn't do my skin any good, and I have fine lines on my forehead now at age 22 as a result. As my skin care regimen got easier and gentler, my skin got clearer and happier.

Methods of Illegal Abortion-- Or Why Keeping Abortion Legal Is the Only Moral Option. by thedreazin TwoXChromosomes

[–]leavesontrees 14 points15 points ago

There was a pro-life demonstration at my school (the one with the giant aborted photoshopped fetus on the side of the truck) and I spoke to one of the pro-"lifers" associated with them. I asked if the money spent on their entire demonstration would be better spent helping women, and that maybe that would save more lives than continuing the traveling shock-and-gore circus. She replied that plenty of students (she couldn't give me numbers) proclaimed that they would stop "committing abortions" after seeing their demonstration.

They don't give a DAMN about the lives of the women, it's all about keeping those sluts in their place. I don't think that articles like this would have much of an effect on them, in their sick and twisted minds, these women deserved it for (1) having sex in the first place and (2) trying to become un-pregnant. They don't care about the woman's ability to care for a child, for her career, for her education, whether her family would disown her, whether the pregnancy was a result of rape, or anything else relating to the woman's personal situation. If she got pregnant, she's a slut, and pregnancy is a punishment from God. Then they go ahead and call it a "gift" and guilt and shame women for getting rid of it. Because that's what Jesus would do.
