Found this at a gas station. by Bret16in funny

You get bored working at a gas station. My buddy and I had a Jenga tournament using cigarette cartons one time.

Nikola Tesla Wasn't God And Thomas Edison Wasn't The Devil by viktorbirin science

[–]labrutued -1 points0 points ago

That was a really good article. Edison's still a jerk, though. Not the devil, mind you. Just a jerk.

I say this because Edison (along with several major corporations; thanks to this article I'll add that) claimed that Edison's ownership of the patent on moving picture cameras allowed him to control who was allowed to use them. He would sue any start-up film company for using cameras without a license--a license he wouldn't sell them.

One of the reasons that Hollywood is where it is, is so that the film makers could flee to Mexico if and when the Edison-men came for them.

Comcast and MLB streams - forcing you to buy cable? by strothgarin cordcutters

Where are you guys that your Comcast internet has caps? I'm in the Bay Area, and it's cap-free.

Online Baseball? by littlewing7in cordcutters

[–]labrutued 0 points1 point ago

MLB.TV is only $115 right now, but if that's still too pricey you can subscribe to GameDay Audio for $10 for the season. It's radio only, but used with the AtBat app online it's not bad.

You can go with the pirate streams--I did that for many years--but you have to put up with the fact that they're often low quality video and aren't reliable. It's one of those "you get what you pay for" things.

Which one is better : Netflix, hulu plus, or Amazon Prime? by pureskilledin cordcutters

Netflix. Isn't Hulu+ going to start forcing you to verify that you have cable before you can use it? Or did they scrap that?

Either way, Netflix.

Is it possible to get streaming TV shows on Roku like on Boxee? by Hobblestonein cordcutters

So I tried both Roconnect and Plex today to see which was better, and officemonkey is definitely right. I couldn't get Roconnect to work, but Plex is awesome.

The reviews for roconnect online make it sound like a dud. Does it work well? Did you have to do anything special to get it to work?

I just had the worst experience ever with a Samsung Smart Hub Blu-Ray player. Cordcutters beware. by labrutuedin cordcutters

[–]labrutued[S] 6 points7 points ago

The thing is, I spent 3 days pouring through reviews, Samsung tech support, and forums looking for people with similar problems and solutions to them. The problems that I had were described everywhere. (Even the way customer service handled my call, which is neither here nor there, except that it was the final straw.) No one had any answers. (Samsung's support page gave irrelevant answers that accomplished nothing.)

Also people described buying multiple units with the same problems--some surfacing instantly like mine, others not surfacing until it was too late to return the thing. I had no intention of risking that, so I just ditched the product all together.

From reviews I found all over the internet (Amazon and elsewhere) the problems I had appear to be more typical than not. Either way, I really didn't want to trust it. I spent 3 days stressed out trying to make it work, and watching it just break more and more. I took it back and got a cheaper, Blu-ray player and a Roku. Overall it was more expensive by about $50, but neither of the new devices have abruptly turned to crap, so I'm happy.

Researching for your next murder mystery in the age of Big Brother. by peterreynardin writing

[–]labrutued 1 point2 points ago

I say just take "the age of Big Brother" thing and run with it. The story starts, the murder happens, global death sensors trigger, secret police arrive and download video from the camera hidden in the murderer's wall, mystery solved. Bonus: You won't even have to do any research.

I write science fiction; I just make shit up.

How many of you have paid for your meal at a wedding? My gf and I are expected to pay $80-100 each for our meals at an upcoming wedding, the bride says its an "unspoken tradition" by bootsmegamixin AskReddit

[–]labrutued -1 points0 points ago

That's dumb. At my wedding we didn't have a dinner, but an appetizer buffet and unlimited wine. The guests didn't have to pay for shit. The whole wedding was split three ways between my dad, my wife's dad, and me and my wife. (Although, thankfully, not split evenly.)

Using semicolons in lists is only for when you have lists within lists. For instance: At the store Tom bought pens, pencils, and markers; an assortment of gold, orange, and black paper; and a butt-plug, two vibrators, and some anal-beads.
