Just for Laughs Student Protesters vs Riot Cops Gag by Dreamerrin montreal

That's a brick wall in Montreal. You can't get any more susceptible to detaching.

Students in Quebec were asked to send the cops the route of their march. Here's what they replied with. by PunPuncherin funny

[–]krusader42 3 points4 points ago

Tuition was unfrozen six years ago, increasing 25% since then. The proposed increase was 70% from 2012 rates over five years, and the government's "compromise" offer was to increase it 80% over seven years. The 2012 rate is already the most expensive (adjusted for inflation) it has been in Quebec since 1974, during the first freeze. At the end of the proposed increase tuition will be the most expensive since the Quiet Revolution brought drastic changes to society in the 1960s.

My biggest issue with the increase is that the Charest government has no mandate to set this increase. This is a government at the end of its term, elected on a platform to increase tuition $100/year until this year who are now proposing to triple that increase over the entire term of the government to be elected next year.

Your $20,000 loan you are struggling to pay is the exact reason why the students are in the streets. This map stunt is in response to the more draconian elements of Bill 78, widely regarded as infringing the rights of protesters (80% agree according to a TVA poll).

He's not necessarily opposed to the student's cause, he's just worried about the effect on his major tourist-drawing event. You could call it selfish, even entitled, but I think he has a right to be concerned.

Trying to make a trip for the fireworks festival, could use some advice. by MikeTheStonein montreal

What weekend is the best?

The one where it won’t rain… :)

Actually, if you don't mind getting a bit wet, a crazy thunderstorm can really add to the experience of a fireworks show. The Chinese display of 2009 comes to mind (the same night Nikki Yanofsky performed at Place des Festivals through the worst of the rain).

Montreal Impact will play the Olympique Lyonnais July 24th! by eugene447in montrealimpact

[–]krusader42 0 points1 point ago

Hmm, you're right. I'm 100% sure someone said Marseille was playing in the Trophée last week but I don't remember if it was in an article, podcast, broadcast or tweet etc. Maybe they meant to say Montpellier?

I was expecting Montpellier or Marseille since they actually have a reason to come to America, the Trophée des champions match in NJ. But instead PSG and Lyon are doming to Montreal? Strange.

To you it's pointless, to others it's an important tradition. Given that it's a figurehead position I don't have a problem with the monarchy; I think we have much more important issues than republicanism.

When the Queen eventually dies, Charles will end up on our coins; we already have a loon on the $1 coin, might as well put one on all of them.

The show I'm most eagerly anticipating is Portugal, but it's Tuesday July 24th; that firm's last visit was my personal pick to win but they were snubbed by the jury. There's also excitement in the fireworks community for the shows by Japan (06/30), France (07/17) and Italy (Friday 07/27).

You don't miss much by watching from the Jacques-Cartier bridge or on Montreal Island near the base of the bridge; because tickets include a full admission to the La Ronde amusement park ($40 admission + $9/$11/$17 fireworks ticket) I wouldn't buy tickets if you aren't going to spend a reasonable amount of time in the park. If you don't go to the park make sure you bring an FM radio to listen to the music. But don't watch from the Old Port, there's far too many people and the view isn't nearly as good as you have to watch through the bridge.

Based on the other festivals I'd recommend the Japanese display during the Jazz Fest. You could also catch some Canada Day celebrations the next day.

As a Marianopolis alumnus, the school is not representative of the average student. It's a private school where tuition and fees is $4,470/year, whereas Vanier's fees total $320; most students at Marianopolis are therefore well-off financially with good RESPs, and many came from private and semi-private high schools.

Arguably it is these students who feel most entitled because their parents have always been able to afford their education. They don't care about the wider student movement as they are not used to paying for their education.

Pétition contre les Vuvuzelas au Stade Saputo by krusader42in montrealimpact

[–]krusader42[S] 1 point2 points ago

When I first saw this group I thought it was ridiculous, people here have been using arena horns reasonably for years. And by reasonably, I mean short blasts, not a constant drone.

But there was a group somewhere near me during the Galaxy game that used them for most of the first half. I assume someone talked to them at half-time to illustrate the annoyance. I now fully support this petition, no more whistle-to-whistle buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz in Montreal!

I was there and my friend said "Are we booing the captain, really?" but then we agreed it was a terrible miss.

The Montreal crowd can quickly turn on a player, they did a good job of drowning out the cheers from teenage girls whenever Beckham touched the ball last week, and I certainly wouldn't want to be Brian Ching when the Dynamo visit next month.

TIL ESPN won an emmy for the superimposed yellow line displaying the first down line for football games by washerin todayilearned

[–]krusader42 4 points5 points ago

I think the bigger miracle is how they distinguish between the green of the grass/turf and the green of uniforms. I know I've seen it in the past where the line will go right through the Jets defensive line but somehow they've got it calibrated so precisely that it no longer overlaps players.

Canada doesn't have the updated system, though. I saw invisible Roughriders a couple times last season.

How many of you that follow MLS still do not own a jersey for your team? by DannyDeviLtoin MLS

[–]krusader42 1 point2 points ago

New team in town so I feel I have some buffer time before I need one. I also only ever get player kits so I wanted some time to familiarize myself with the new roster; though I nearly got a Sebrango jersey in honour of his long second division service, but then he changed his number before the first home game and I've been stalling since.

Ubiparipovic is now the current favourite because he's played well in the chances he's had and because the name is ridiculous. Whoever ends up on the back I know I'll definitely have one in time for the Saputo Stadium opener.
