The Reddit Leagues by KTrout17in fantasybaseball

[–]josefjohann 2 points3 points ago

Reddit has a huge contrarian impulse so that kind of comment is inevitable. But I bet your experience is true in the vast majority of cases. I used to love drafting, but I tried just one auction league a few years ago and I've never looked back.

CORRELATION DOES NOT MEAN CAUSATION, GUYS! by whoawutin circlejerk

I want to thank all of you brave troopers for braving your bravery in this thread..

So far, out of 170 comments only a third have told me that "correlation is not causation." This has literally changed my life.

"Never again will I draft this player..." by DrVanNostrenin fantasybaseball

But there are some players that will likely not ever reach that round X where you consider them a good value. You can say of such players that you are "never" drafting them and be more or less understood.

Do you think a video game could ever tell a story like a movie or novel does? by CaptianReedin AskReddit

I agree with you. But I would say the first Deus Ex is close to approaching art- it has you make decisions, and much of the emotional force of the game comes from considering the decisions and their ethical implications. I remember feeling really sad when the game ended, because I didn't want it to end. It's the only game I've played where the conversations even get ideological, and the end of the game has you make a decision based on what you think is best for the future of the world.

It is very close to being a literary experience. There is an image somewhere on reddit showing a huge stack of tabbed folders filled with paper, which is the totality of Deus Ex dialog.

He was traded to the Red Sox as part of the Heathcliff Slocumb deal.

There will probably be a time, 8 years from now, where I'm watching Pineda start the 2020 All Star game and I'll be thinking to myself "weird... that guy used to be a Mariner, didn't he?" in a kind of disbelieving way. The same way I do now for Jason Varitek.

Prince Fielder to the Tigers in a 9 year deal by BigGrantin baseball

It's Alex Rodriguez all over again.

I just wanted to jump in & say the first Alex Rodriguez contract was worth it. The second one was possibly the worst in the history of sports.

He'll always have the Sopranos and those vodka commercials. So he has an acting career to fall back on which is nice.

Mind-candy question: What will happen to how the designated hitter is valued when each league has 15 teams? by sgtbutterscotchin baseball

[–]josefjohann 0 points1 point ago

This will hurt the AL because I believe Selig has stated there will practically be year round interleague play, meaning AL teams will probably see their pitchers bat more as they visit NL stadiums

Is this true though? Are there actually going to be more interleague games, now? If not, then I'd say the value of a DH is about the same as it is now.

How much stock do you guys put into a player's work ethic and maturity level? Here's an interesting article on how the Yankees weren't too thrilled with how Jesus Montero handled himself over the years. by BallsDeep8in baseball

So the Yanks gave that significant number to a couple of backup, free agent shortstops? I don't know how that's supposed to make any more sense.

Bullpen Banter ranks all the farm systems, Rangers take first with Blue Jays a close second. by ecnassiualin baseball

[–]josefjohann 0 points1 point ago

That works great for players but not teams. There is, I think, a significant difference between rating someone as a "prospect" on the grounds that they would technically qualify for the ROY award, and claiming that such a player is part of a teams "farm system," when he has never played and never will play a day in that system.

Right, and since for the purposes of this exercise they were free choose to any definition they pleased, it's weird they elected for this one.

Considering Yu Darvish as a prospect? I don't think he'll spend a day in the Rangers minor league system.

My understanding of "farm system" is that it refers to players who will spend some or most of the near future on minor league affiliate teams.

Marco Scutaro Traded to Rockies by wicket146in baseball

[–]josefjohann 10 points11 points ago

True, the Rockies really don't have room for Tulo anymore. He'll probably will get sent to Boston. But if the Rox move Tulo, he leaves behind a huge salary hole that will need to be filled, so it would make sense to get John Lackey and Carl Crawford in the deal.

When a pitcher and hitter face each other for the first time, who do you think has the advantage? by Macbrantisin baseball

[–]josefjohann 0 points1 point ago

Bit of a digression: people talk about the difficulty of transitioning from relief to starting in terms of "getting through the lineup multiple times." But isn't it possible that getting through 9 batters could be hard, because batters can share information with each other?

Obviously it's not the same as seeing a pitcher twice yourself but still.
