Derren Brown plays 9 simultaneous chess games against 9 chess masters (4 of which are GMs). He wins 5 out of 9 games by using a clever trick of the mind. by haddock420in chess

[–]joeblessyou 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, viewers are still an audience. He is tricking the people participating in the illusion/trick and there is no reason why he would not trick the audience watching his show as well. Regardless a lot of what he says/explains is true. Like the one episode he gives everyone the same horoscope reading.

It's not that I rebelled, it's was just a matter of it making sense or not. When you ask a question like "How is God not responsible for evil, if everything comes from God?", and you only get deflections like "God works in mysterious ways" along with the implecation that you are doing something bad by questioning him, I had to ask myself if that's an attempt on religion's part to suppress any conflicting ideas. Science will never make a statement like "that phenomenon behaves like this because it works in mysterious ways". Furthermore, science will never try to prove something by suppressing any doubts about what its trying to prove. It is also good to note science and religion are not opposites. Science is more of a tool, religion is an idea embedded into cultures that have many social and cultural impacts.

This very unfalsifiable nature of christianity is what made me doubt it. It's as if a dictator of a military government decides to randomly kill people and justifies it by saying "if you doubt in my decision making we will never make this country better". Then if people are gullible they will weep over the dead while lying to themselves that it's for the greater good of the country. If an idea states that proving it wrong is evidence that it's right, that idea is unfalsifiable and therefore probably not a good idea.

If he really did it because the victim was gay, then that's pretty much a hate crime. Unlike what you're saying, most people would not go there, not to mention he is running for president which most people are not.

Throwaway time! What politically incorrect beliefs do you hold? by Leap20in AskReddit

My point is you can't justify something based on its legality. Many legal things should be illegal, and vice versa.

Sirlin - Diablo 3's Ability System by noctalin gamedev

[–]joeblessyou 0 points1 point ago

I think the argument boils down to whether skills and abilities are part of your character or not. Why not be able to switch classes at any time and transfer all your skill points? Why force people to play 70+ hours again if they just want to try the sorceress instead of the barbarian? How much should the player commit to? In my opinion, high commitment yields the most rewarding gameplay experience, since you are risking more and others are as well.

In Diablo 2, you can't respec your talents. Just think about that for a minute. If you spend a talent point wrong once, you have start over your entire character.

I never understood why this is a problem. Is that too hard to do? Create another character and play again? If I recall, you could rush D2 in a couple hours or less. Even if it was a pain in the ass to create a new character in order to make a new build, isn't that part of the challenge?

His analogy of not being able to switch characters in a fighting game is actually flawed and works against the article's point. You can't switch fighters (analogous to a build) in the middle of a fight! You have to start the fight all over again. In some fighting games you can't even switch fighters in story mode--guess what... you have to start all over in order to play with someone else. There seems to be a trend in RPGs where the player doesn't need to commit to anything anymore. What's wrong with committing to a build?

You do but it isn't as important as before, since there are no real repercussions to choosing.

[–]joeblessyou 1 point2 points ago

I'm with you. There's basically no repercussion to choosing the wrong skill, therefore no need to stop and think what you're going to build. You just choose whatever skill, try it out, and if you don't like it try something else. This is more akin to an action game where you have a menu with all your weapons, rather than an RPG where deciding what skill you have is important.

Boys Rule, Girls Drool... [FB] by Cameronisftwin funny

[–]joeblessyou 0 points1 point ago

Yep, makes sense. In it's in female's best interest to lure and keep the male, hence the change in behavior after marriage, since females need support until the offspring become independent. For males, it is in their best interest (form a reproductive POV) to keep having sex and continue procreating.
