My friend got 3rd place on Saturday by swellfellain bjj

[–]j_cobra 2 points3 points ago

Don't you mean Sunday? The girl on 2nd is my friend Michelle! Did you compete yesterday?? I did. Was a bunch of fun. I only got one match in, lost but took home bronze. Just the experience of a big tournament was worth it though.

Did I just shoot myself in the foot? by j_cobrain bjj

[–]j_cobra[S] 1 point2 points ago

Definitely can see how it looks like sandbagging but I never thought I could be a blue until I heard him say that he was actually considering promoting me. If anything, I'm more motivated knowing he sees my growth and want to live up to his expectations.

Just got a call from my BJJ instructor. One of our purple belts just shot and killed himself. by scorchenin bjj

I'm really sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing. I just sent a text to a blue belt who hasn't been in class lately.

I think that's the point. Ideally, everyone would look at it the way you do. Unfortunately, that's not the case. There are guys AND girls out there whose ego gets the better of them and feel shame when tapping out to any opponent.

I know i'm late but the new instructor at K-1 is Romulo Melo. He's the real deal and a great instructor. I go there 4-5 times a week. A bunch of us followed him when Fairtex closed and I'm really glad I did.

I'm 28 and took up muay thai about a year ago. I absolutely love it and recommend anyone interested try it at least once. You can get what you want out of it - a great workout, form, discipline, competition. It just depends on what you're looking for.

Rolling jiu jitsu is my focus lately and I feel so empowered getting on the mat with people bigger than me. It might be a better option for you if you're worried about coordination. Also, I wouldn't opt for a women only class to start, I find it beneficial to go up against guys who are bigger/stronger. I look at it as motivation to push myself and hold my own.

Dislocated Shoulder Rehab by Dynastyyin Fitness

I'd hold off a little if I were you. I dislocated my shoulder a couple months ago and didn't take care of it properly and it's pretty much gotten worse. There are a bunch of rotator cuff exercises you can do to strengthen the muscle around the shoulder to keep it from dislocating again, google/youtube it. And really, don't rush into it or it'll just happen again.

While it was likely a cup, it's entirely possible the cup was blocking a boner. One of my training partners was drunk last Saturday and made some reference to me mounting him in class and his cup hiding his boner. Not sure if he was serious but still.

Why all the way in Fremont? I live in sf and don't have a car but would be down to hit up an open mat if it was in the city.

Need advice... How to become better at muay thai? by HOYstain666in MuayThai

YouTube. Aside from padwork and conditioning etc, watching videos of proper technique really helped me. When I was first starting, my kicks were horrible because I wasn't turning my hip. Then I started watching yodsanklai kick a bag and when I would practice, I'd just try to do it like him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=witJISymkWo

I spent the rest of my afternoon reading several entries on that blog and her recommended links. Thanks! And don't tell my boss.

My instructor is actually really good about this. In all the classes I've been in without another girl to roll with, he'll match me up with the more experienced guys who seem more patient and controlled. It helps alleviate the anxiety a bit.

Thanks for the insight. I've found myself getting discouraged and doing the thing you mentioned about conceding. I think it's tied to confidence because I get frustrated with myself for getting to that point or not knowing how to defend. I'm definitely going to work on executing techniques correctly rather than worrying about strength.

Thanks! Yea, I'm a girl. I like the idea of having the guy start in the bad position. If they're working on something as well, I won't feel like I'm wasting anyone time.

Maybe it's not but I have a mental block about it in my head. I worry that guys in the class won't want to roll with me because I'm not as strong or experienced. I suppose that might be something all beginners worry about but there's a little more of an obvious disadvantage being the only girl in class.

I'd hold off on a custom if you just started. A shock doctor and head gear should be good.

Also, gladiators are awesome (http://www.customguards.com/) and under $100.

Is this happening? I'm already going to the game (not sitting in the bleachers though). Maybe I'll just randomly throw up the Reddit hand signal/sign and see what happens.

Any Redditors currently going to kickboxing/MMA gyms in the south bay? by no_surprisesin bayarea

The gym I go to in SF has a location in Mountain View.

1) The gym is called Fairtex. It's primarily a muay thai gym, but offer jiu jitsu, boxing and conditioning classes as well. 2) Membership costs roughly $100 to $150/mo depending on which package you choose. They offer a free first week for beginners. I belive there's also a $75 application fee. They run seasonal specials as well. 3) Fairtex is like a family. Attitudes are checked at the door, or don't last long at the gym. Everyone is really helpful and welcoming. 4) If you're ever up in the SF gym, I'd be happy to help!
